The 64-page print on demand book I ordered came a month late and contains just 25 leaves one of which (in about the middle) is blank, the others printed on one or both sides, but many being in the wrong order. Abebooks and the bookseller in India both prevaricate rather than simply agree to refund the cost. Also they seem not interested in having the defective book returned to them. Only use Abebooks as a means of then dealing directly with a bookseller you know is genuine and trustworthy.

We ordered a book on 28/9/22 and paid for it. We were told that it was unavailable and we would receive a refund. No refund has been given and Abe books just say that they have paid the money back into our account. Over a month now and no refund. Avoid this company.

This is a review for Irish Booksellers who sell through Abebooks, not Abebooks itself (which is generally excellent). Beware! Do not buy from thm! Purchased book through Abebooks sold as 'new', but received filthy battered copy. Seller kept promising partial refund that never materialised - as a way to spin-out process until Abe closes case. Clear from multiple online reviews this is a standard practise from merchant (in addition to even worse tricks). If you have already bought before reading this, persist in reporting to Abe & keep demanding refund...hopefully Abebooks will eventually take decisive action & close them down.

Avoid like the plague! Book arrived late. When I queried it, and ever since on many occasions, they refuse to even address, never mind answer my questions! And they even have the unmitigated gall to claim "We are not willfully withholding any information"! This is nothing less than a bald-faced story! They refuse to listen, e.g. at no time did I ever tell them I had not received the book. The persistently chose to ignore that and now, after many weeks and many emails repeating myself, they have issued a refund. But even with that, they could/would not do that in a timely manner! And, potentially even worse, they play fast and loose with your personal data! In my case, they confirmed the book was being sold to me by one company in the USA, yet a totally different company contacted me - eventually - one who I did not know, had never heard of and at no time authorised anyone to give them my personal data! When I challenged AbeBooks about this, their response (after ignoring me repeatedly) clearly demonstrated that they have conducted no due diligence of any description, as the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 require them to do! Their supervisor claims "Unfortunately I don't have any additional levels I can escalate this for, as you've been escalated to a supervisor. Our team is quite small." So what?! AbeBooks is not a company registered in the UK, so, either it is some other UK registered company 'trading as', or they are part of an overseas company 'trading as' in the UK, or the supervisor is and independent trader, a one man band, so to speak. Whichever is the case, that band's music is utter garbage!

I ordered a book which was quoted as 1-3 days expected delivery. After 7 days, without any communication from Abebooks, I emailed for an explanation. I was told that the book had been sent 5 days after ordering, and delivery would be another 1-3 days. The reply also suggested that I should wait 12 days before contacting my local sorting office. Surely it is up to Abebooks to do the enquiries, not me. What appalling service. Naturally I will never ever deal with Abebooks again.

BE WARNED If the seller sends the wrong or damaged book, you will get a refund - but not the full cost of the return postage. Only a sum equal to the sellers declared cost of sending will be given - and since that is very often below the true cost of postage, you will be out of pocket. Two books returned to Germany because of failures by the sellers cost me £11 for the privilege - and a refusal to even reply to my appeal against the unfairness. I was a very prolific customer - but no more. They expect you to pay upfront, sight unseen, on the basis of trust, then are quite prepared to penalise you if things go wrong through no fault of your own. And ignore your (polite) emails. Go to sellers direct: it is often cheaper, and more courteous.

I ordered 2 hard back books from 2 different sellers via ABE books - both sellers sent me 2 scruffy paper back books. ABE were of no use whatsoever in obtaining a refund

I opened an account and ordered two books at the start of the year. The first book never turned up and the second was so damaged (looked like it had been chewed by a dog) that it could not be read. When I try to contact Abe they just wash their hands of the situation and tell me to speak to the sellers who never respond.

Do not even think about buying a book from this company if you not want to risk wasting your money and time. The book descriptions are misleading - not accurate or honest. "Excellent" could mean a battered ex-library copy with a torn and creased cover and the first page missing. "Buy with confidence" could mean you will get a book with the front photo page half ripped out and also a worn ex-library copy. You will not be told whether a book is an ex-library copy. Customer service is very poor. Your explanation of a problem may go unanswered or be answered in a way that shows complete misunderstanding of the problem (e.g. offering to investigate why a book was not delivered when you have explained that the book was not in the condition described). A refund may be offered, but then not actually paid. The stated refund/return policies are not followed. In short, you may not get the book in the condition it was described as, and you will not get any reasonable customer service to sort out the problem. After four or more weeks the problem you have had will still not be fixed.

I desperately needed two books for my course. After over two month neither have arrived (the estimated delivery was two to five working days). The sellers have yet to reply to the three emails I've sent. They probably weren't even dispatched. I was able to have the books transferred to my nearest provincial library in half the time. The prices look good, but you risk loosing your money.

Bought a book that I thought was the full blown version, only to find that it was a World Books day £1.00 version. So I paid £3.61 for a book that originally cost £1.00. Not sure how they justify the postage cost of £2.99 - would have seemed reasonable for the full version. I could not see anything in the advert that told me that this was the World Books version.

i recently bought a brian plummer book (polly) which i have been looking for. i wanted the hardcover edition and was pleased to find it on Abebooks site at a price of £ 21 odd. this seemed a reasonable price until i received the book and found that it was the softcover version which can be purchased anywhere for less than £ 10. i contacted abebooks and, to be fair, they asked me to return the book and they would refund the cost. a few days later they contacted me and said that they had received the book and had refunded my credit card. having waited 2 weeks without sign of my repayment, i contacted them again and received a 1 line email saying they would not refund me because it was too late. given that they misrepresented the book in the first place, asked me to return it, said that they had refunded my credit card etc.etc. i am not best pleased. avoid this company at all costs !!!!

I ordered and paid for my book on 21 June, when it still had not arrived by 14th July I tried to contact them by e-mail. I an got automated respoinse saying they were habing problems with the post and it would be another 3-4 days. After a week it had still not arrived. I have been trying to contact them since then and receive only automated e-mails saying they have forwarded my messages to the bear book company supplying the book. I e-mailed them directly explaining what has happened and requested a refund and received an e-mail today saying that as far as they are concerned I have had my book. There is no way to contact them by telephone to sort this out. The book was not expensive but it is the principal that I have paid for something that I have not had.

Ordered a travel guide in March. Money was taken immediately. It's now May and I'm about to go on holiday and it still hasn't arrived. I ordered the book via the abebooks uk website. When I complained in April about the book not arriving I got a reply from a company called quatermelon, which I assume is the actual book seller.
Whoever is responsible I don't care. I'm used to Amazon's reliable 1-day service, or redhouse for my kids books.
I would not recommend using this company. If you have spare money to throw away then you should give it to charity instead.

Please do not shop with this company... I ordered a book via the company, I got an older edition. I had to pay shipping to ship the book back to them, I am still waiting for a REFUND. Never will use them again.

Postscript: Abebooks customer service finally did sort out the problems - more than 5 weeks after first being notified - by refunding the cost of misleadingly described books. As a customer, I feel that it should not have been so difficult nor have taken so long to solve problems that should not have occurred in the first place. Definitely still a case of "buyer beware".
