The Rover 216 GTI is a fantasticly nippy car it is a modern classic and can keep up with any of the newer cars in looks and speed. There are a few shows to go to with your modern Rover but they are becoming more popular keep your eyes open for more events.

I love my gti, mrs hates it!!! i dont care about group 14 insurance, its a beast of a 1.6. go for dohc if at all poss, best engine out of the lot. Reliable, fast, mostly easy to repair. Rust (not on mine) and that apparently they used to put loctite on the cv joint are the only bad points.

The rover 216 gti mine being the 1990 H reg is one of the beast things rover produced but only with the help of the honda 1600cc DOHC engine in it. One day i would like the 220 turbo coupe as they are supposed to be better than the escort rs turbo!! but would settle for a turbo on the 1600 if some one made one for it? never buy i rover with a rover engine in they are not very good at all, stick with the honda engine if at all possible.
Hope this helps some of you out there to get your first rover 216 gti if you buy one u will never look back i never have, had this one now 4 years done 50,000 miles in these 4 years and replaced only 1 tyre and a track rod end altogether on all 4 mot's.passed everytime.
So have fun and take care of it ok.

My Car is the 216 gti twincam honda engine in british racing green, full kit, still looks nice when parked up, but wind down the window, accelrate hard and listen to that beautiful sound coming from your exhaust, that's why i love my GTI, all the lads at work have got their souped up fiesta and seats, but they all say my car sounds awesome, i rest my case...

At the moment I own 18 Rover GTi,s single cams,2ltr.220 GTi,s and without doubt the 1600cc Honda twin cam is by far the best out of any of them. They are identical on 0-60mph as the 220GTi and only a couple of mph slower on top speed

I have had mine for six years. Bought with 43K genuine on the clock. This is a lovely car that suits my lifestyle and I do not want it to get older!
Mechanics all recommend changing the oil every 6k miles.
Keep an eye on the rear wheel arches for rust forming.
Where does the water come from in the bottom of the boot?

Water in boot may mean sunroof drain pipe come adrift. Check behind side panels go out at side of bumper.

The water in the boot I found on mine comes from the black trim under the curved rear plastic windows which are not a good seal a few years down the line.

I noticed that mine had been leaking through the tailgate around the rear wiper. Silicone sealant will easily solve this though. I don't use mine, so I removed the whole wiper arm and motor, and simply plugged the hole with a rubber grommet. The water has now failed to re-appear.

I've had my Rover 216 GTI for nearly 2 years wouldn't change it to any other car. For that cheap price it's got great engine. With some adjustments to the engine I take on BMW328. Plus it's got the looks ;)

Did the person in the 328 know that you were racing him? I dont think this really happened! unless you've put nos in your box? As for as handling goes, well it doesn't really its like concrete tyres on a frosty morning.

Haha, nice "I take on BMW328"

Dream on, unles you take on and lose!

I have a 328 now, which is faster than my Saxo VTS was, which was leaps and bounds quicker than my previous car 216gti 16v.

Oh, and 135 on the clock, proly about 115 in real life. possibly worse if you have changed the tyres or wheels from standard size.

If you are going to advise people, advise them correctly please.

written by round on 19/12/2003

Since I bought the Rover 216 GTI I have been amazed at the top quality preformance, and the DOHC engine gives a blistering 0-60 of about 8 seconds, which for a 1600 standard is very quick.
overall I am well pleased with the car, even the standard speakers do it some justice.
I would of prefered the half leather as the interiour is preaty poor but hey you can't have everything.
After all else said
I LOVE THIS CAR!!!

written by ChrisX on 01/12/2003

My Rover 216 GTI is a grat car !! The SOHC isn't that fast for a hot hatch but is as quick as an XR3i for example. They handle well, are reliable and are far better quality than the cheapo offerings from ford or vauxhall at the time.
The DOHC version is a stunner, fast, great sounding and reliable. Easily better than a Golf GTI. Only bad point is that its quite thirsy giving 30MPG at best really, but its worth it.

Varma's Response to ChrisX's Review

A fantastic motor for the money, insurance isnt too steep. The twincam 216 gti is faster then a standard escort rs turbo. If your after tuning parts the twin cam D16A8/9 are exactly the same as the Japaniese ZC engine for which there are masses of tuning parts including a Jackson racing supercharger kit. the D16A6 SOHC engine is widely tuned in america so if u want parts for that america is the best place to look for part numbers, and there are many companies in the UK now that will import the parts for you.

216Gsi's Response to ChrisX's Review

Written on: 09/01/2004

I have a 216 gsi SOHC got a motobuild 4 branch manifold and exhaust system, k=n 57i, FSE power boost valve splitfire spark plugs etc. 132 BHP on the rollers, its a very underated car with the same engine as the SOHC gti and have beat several 220gti's, its great when a saxo vts or clio 16v can't get past you. Next up is a modified head, the only thing that lets it down is the fact that it has not got much torque and engine tuning parts are hard to find, ow and it needs lowering and big wheels. But all in all I love this car and will regret ever getting rid of it.
