I could almost imagine this tale being told to me by a friend during a long evening and light intoxication. There appears to be so much detail in the events which take place it almost makes you think it could be real. But you know it's not because it is fiction. But if there were a piece of fiction which might be plausible, this would be amongst them.

It is the story of a writer who decides he is going to discover research the inventor of the nuclear bomb. Dr. Hoenikker. He finds along the way the late mad scientist had 3 very odd children, a dwarf, a daughter 6 foot tall and a toy model maker who liked engineering projects in miniture. The children basically grow up on their own after the mother died as Hoenikker, was incapable of raising them. However, there is a sinsister twist as the writer realises Hoenikker had created the ultimate weapon. One small enough to be carried around but with devastating effects, this he called ICE 9. A susbstance which freezes everything it comes into contact with. The writer's quest for more information leads him into a world in which he also discovers a religeon and plays with the philosphy of the religeon and ICE 9. This religeon is identified as Bokonism practiced on a small Island the writer has travelled to talk to Hoenicker's grown up children. The writer is the central character in this story and is on a journey of learning, but isn't quite sure what it all means.

In part this story reminds me of a different science fiction writer who has successfully duped many people into believing his own religeon. I'll let you guess which one it is, I'm sure you know. Whereas Bokonism hasn't taken off at all, it certainly sounds more worthwhile. It's a story about a world at threat from three rather ordinary abnormal people who don't really understand what is in their possession. People who are like the rest of us, frail and prone to making mistakes. The book is a black comedy and perhaps it is fortunate you are held off at arm's length otherwise it would be too easy to become paranoid. And being paranoid about 3 odd ball people holding the fate of the world in their own vacuum flasks would be pretty scary.

Kurt Vonnegut's, Cat's Cradle is an original and well-written story, about greed, selfishness, science and the strange variations in humankind. Most of the characters are fairly extreme, often having an obvious physical quality that sets them apart, e.g. dwarfism or extreme beauty. The characters seem always to be rather cold. The actual story itself is perhaps a little thin and straightforward, but the way it is told is entertaining and chilling. A book about ice in many ways.
