I Suffered With It.
This is just unbelievable book. The only book, from books that I have read, that made me physically sick. This is just unbelievable storytelling. I feel physically sick and disturbed by the images of rats eating bloated and dead body's of solders.
This is not some macho story about war, this is real human perspective about what and how do I feel in the field of battlefield of WW1. This is unbelievably personal and bright story.
Although some of other reviews downplay significance of Love story at first chapters and trough book, I think that illustrates way of life at the end - from bloody birth to bloody end.
I wont recommend this to friend - this must be personal journey to this book.
This wont be book for mind that is only fed with Hollywood war-macho stories.

The Joys Of Uni Work
I have to read this book for uni and I think the character of Stephen is the most irrational and annoyingly boring and adds nothing to the book. The concept I agree is a good one but I believe it is poorly executed on the part of Faulk's himself. As for the parts set in the 70s they are to short to have any significance and therefore become void. The war parts of this novel are also far too detailed when most of the information is irrelevant or inconsequential and therefore could of been shorter without any affect of the storyline itself.

I Loved This Book And Cant Believe That It Has Had
i loved this book and cant believe that it has had some bad reviews, its was a real insight of how the men suffered at war, and what they went through and was so descriptive i felt as if i could pretty much see what was going on, i couldn't put it down till it was done and read it in about 3 days.some of it was gruesome, but not overly erotic at all, I'm sure anyone who has had a lover would not bat an eyelash.i brought this book second hand, and if i had to id buy another one just to have a copy. if you liked this book i highly recommend his other novel 'human traces' hes not afraid to attack issues that other people are more comfortable sweeping under the carpet

This Book Is Terrible. I Would Not Reccomend It To
This book is terrible. I would not reccomend it to anyone. I feel it was a waste of time reading it and to those of you who study it in english literature, be prepared to be confused and bored!
its inconceivable to me that this person is doing english above high school level and cant follow this.

I Can Personally Say, This Was A Terrible, Atrocio
I can personally say, this was a terrible, atrocious book. I found it incredibly monotonous and tedious (especially the war section) and note to Faulk's "what were you thinking when you leaped like a frog through to the war section?" how uneartly random. In my opionion the book is only slightly enthrauling during the pages of sexual scenery. I also enjoyed the 'wet parted flesh' in which is still engrained on my memory.
I found this review somewhat helpful because...it put what i was thinking in to words i'm not very happy with the novel myself and do believe it is definatly over rated.

Well I Have To Say I Was Very Disapointed In This
well i have to say i was very disapointed in this book! i am having to ready it for A level english and am beggining to get very bored, as the book is boring me non of it is going in to my head which is making it very difficult wright essays on.it maybe well written so in literature it might be interesting, but thats just the style of writting, but the story its self i hard to get in to. i wouldnt recomend this book but if you are also planning on taking A level english this book maybe on the agender so just remember if its not for you,you may have to read it more than once to make it stick in your head.
i despair if you really are reading this for A level English. At "A" level, you should be far more competent.
Oh, how standards have slipped!!

Faulks Has A Filthy Mind - I Had To Skip Loads Of
Faulks has a filthy mind - i had to skip loads of this book! I don't like his style at all - he writes in an arrogant way, and even though he is very precise with his description, he does it very bluntly. I had to read this over the summer holidays - but every time i picked it up and read a page it was just *mind-numbing*. Maybe i dislike it so much because i was ordered to read it and i wanted something in a more 'flowery' 'flowing' style
If you like:
gore/gruesome-ness
lots of 'saucy' moments
serious unhappy stories
...then get out there and read it
Thank you :-D
I found this review not helpful because it was very narrow minded, this book indeed can be seen as boring, but once the story begins is certainly is not unhappy, this is a book about love and how war effected the love. The main character Stephen is a verp deep character, who leads the book perfectly with the relationships he builds throughout.
Of course this book is about war, and there are going to be parts which are gruesome, but it is not even the main part, Sebastian Faulks is trying to portray what the soldiers would have seen while in the trenches and i think it is a deeply moving story. I was hesitant at first and didnt bother reading it, and then i went back to it and found it a rather compelling story. I think you should just give the book a chance, and open your mind to what this book is supposed to be about.
I found this review not helpful because...
When you wrote your review, you clearly did not look into the book in detail and take it in. Faulks does not have a "filthy" mind. All the sex scenes are there for a reason and you do not seem to be able to see they are there for a purpose. Many of them are metaphors for the horror of the war to come and show the how the war changes the mens reaction to women during the course of the novel. This is shown in the farm house scene, when stephen takes weir to be with a woman before the last push.
I suggest that you read the whole book carefully and analyse it as you go. This will give you a better view of the book and help you make a better review.
