The New Critical Idiom Gives A Great Overview Of G

The New Critical Idiom gives a great overview of Gothic, including the main critical literature. Identifies and explains historical, socio-political and aesthetic contexts for Gothic straightforwardly and very helpfully. Having read Eve Kosofsky-Sedgwick's 'The Coherence of Gothic Conventions', along with Franco Moretti's 'Signs Taken for Wonders', which includes a long essay on Gothic, I found Fred Botting's book perhaps more illuminating. The language doesn't perform theoretical acrobatics but the writing is clear, pacy and informative. Maybe better for overview, which is very incisive, than for close analysis of texts.
