“Plusses and minusses of new format”

★★★★☆

written by davidland43 on 27/11/2015

New format = plus for clarity of the timeline and the inclusion of major life events for close family members. Minus (strong) for changing placenames from what they were at the time of events to present day, no doubt 'politically correct' names. A really bad example is translating Sebastopol in Russia in the Crimean War to the Ukraine. Thoroughly irritating is Ceylon, at the time of the Indian Mutiny, to 'Western Sri Lanka'.

“Impressed but a little spammy”

written by saraht69 on 23/09/2013

Really impressed with Ancestry and have managed to track my family back to the early 1800's in no time at all. The only downside for me is the marketing side of there business feels a little spammy. My inbox is constantly receiving emails from them so be prepared for this!

“Happy to Use”

★★★★☆

written by on 10/07/2013

I have been using Ancestry for some years now as well as other sites. I have researched my own, my husbands as well as an american friends family history and overall find ancestry one of the easier sites to use. Each family history site has it's strengths and weaknesses but I use ancestry most of the time. As I have some non british ancestry I have found some difficulty in getting information on this area, but do not necessarily think this is ancestry's problem, as it would appear that you would need to be on a higher level of genealogy to access (a professional). I would like to see greater co-operation with the Scottish ancestry site but am aware Ancestry has tried to gain this.

“Efficient site Lazy Management”

★★★★☆

written by terrier13 on 23/04/2013

I had tried Ancestry some time ago on the Free Trial basis before finally taking the plunge last summer and have not regretted it one iota. You have to bear in mind, like any human activity there are strengths and weaknesses involved. From a personal perspective it took some time even to get started because you have to learn how to get the best out of it, how to manage your research and how to handle the hints. You soon pick up the reliable and not so reliable contributors. Secondly you have to adopt a stepping stone philosophy. We would all like to follow our roots back to someone famous in a linear fashion but this does not promulgate human understanding. You have to look at your forebears as a giant jigsaw puzzle; all the interlinking gives it strength. Ancestry have one major flaw. They are lazy in updating transcription and errors that users have pointed out. Even the most flagrant of errors are not corrected formally, although to their credit they did add an index page that was missing from a Census page quite quickly. Another example of inefficiency is that they do not correct where index shows several pages different from the actual Census page making research and corrections difficult to say the least. Obviously you have to look outside the box for alternative information and as a rule this is getting better all the time. To conclude, whatever you achieve with Ancestry.co.uk or Ancestry.com has to be seen as a development from past efforts and others to explore further.

“Ancestry.co.uk - curate's egg - good in parts.”

★★★★☆

written by LesDx on 06/04/2013

I've been part of Ancestry on-and-off for many years and don't have a problem with their subscription/cancellation process. I also found the software excellent in tracking 'easy' relatives through several links - BMD/Census/etc. As such, it's great to get started. But the database is getting very large, and some additions are not well transcribed. In particular, the London Electoral Registers seem to have been processed by far-eastern computers and are exceedingly difficult to search, other than by trawling through the source images. With Ancestry being run by Americans, knowledge of UK geography can often be wide of the mark. Brentford (Middlesex) in Oxfordshire? I think not! The 'hints' can also get overwhelming and, in-so-far as they link to other member-sites, can be very misleading. The general rule has to be, assume all other member-sites' information is suspect until confirmed by a source citation. In conclusion, Ancestry is a great aid to genealogy research but should not be assumed to be the only tool available. Nor should it be assumed to be completely reliable.

“ONLINE GENEALOGY”

Good site, loads of records but I really wish they would list searches in year order to make it easier to find what you are looking for. The only other problem I have with the site is the cost. It is much too expensive. Now I am no longer working I cannot afford to be a member. Shame really.

“Value for money for a hobby I enjoy”

★★★★☆

written by vmw215 on 19/06/2012

I consider using ancestry.co.uk a hobby of mine & therefore, based on the information, the leads, links & knowledge I’ve gained over the years, I firmly believe it’s good value for money. Think about other hobbies, sports & entertainment & how much you’d spend on them a year. I love ancestry.co.uk – it’s easy to use & has been instrumental in bringing comfort to my Mother who was orphaned as a child. I have been able to improve my knowledge of my immediate ancestors as well as those much further back. No, it’s not perfect & I’d like to see the search engine improved but I have no plans to stop using it at this point.

“Better than watching the TV, any day!”

★★★★☆

written by hadenmaiden on 15/06/2012

I use ancestry.co.uk daily, and find it very user friendly. I've had occasion to call customer help a couple of times, and have been very impressed with the standard of service - people who actually listen to your query and respond in a helpful manner. The tree building and search facilities are comprehensive and become more intuitive with use. The hints are abundant, and easy to accept or reject [which means you can save them for later, just in case] I like the layered subscription system, which means that you can purchase membership at the correct level for your needs. What would be really good would be if you could just do a temporary upgrade, say for a month at a time, for checking out some records which may, or may not be relevant/useful. I do have a slight issue with the automatic renewal system, and would prefer to get a reminder so that I can pay each year individually. I've been happy with the privacy of the site, and have met some good contacts, with whom I have become real 'family' The messaging system works well. Will continue to use the site daily, despite one or two little niggles.

“Good but could do better”

★★★★☆

written by on 01/03/2012

I have been using the UK version of Ancestry for several years and have built a comprehensive Family Tree and met lots of interesting people along the way. I am pleased with the general coverage of Ancestry, particularly census returns and the London Parish Registers but my biggest frustration is the poor standard of transcribing. I have often found names by dint of lateral thinking and, when I have checked the image, seen the names are quite clearly written but have been transcribed wrongly, sometimes bizzarely. This even applies to mis-transcribing the place of birth when the census has been taken in the same geographical area. I have often remarked that transcribers need a gazetteer or simple atlas alongside to check spellings.

“very good need to improve”

written by rse1949 on 29/02/2012

I think ancestry is very good most of the time it can be a bit frustrating at times especially when you have tapped in all your details only to find it comes up blocked and you need to pay extra to read the item also I find it really annoying when you put in someones DOB say 1840 and mostly it comes up with a lot of pages other than the 1841c first

Thank you for your feedback. I can appreciate the frustration when you are following a lead and are prompted to upgrade your subscription. We have three subscription types which offer different levels of access. UK Essentials offers access to key UK Births Marriages & Deaths and Census records. UK Premium includes pre-1837 parish records, London Metropolitan, immigration and emigration records and Irish records in addition to what is contained in UK Essentials. Our most comprehensive subscription is Worldwide. With Worldwide you have access to 10 Billion records available across all our databases. If you find a record which is not covered by your current subscription it would prompt you to upgrade.

“Ancestry.co.uk”

★★★★☆

written by on 29/02/2012

On the whole we are happy with the record sets, indices and digital books available on this site. Good coverage of Census records although some of the transcriptions are a little 'off' that leads to problems with the 'search' facility. The range of records is good and we particularly like the parish registers as these have often backed up other evidence and pinpointed parishes in London. We have also used the worldwide Ancestry.com and are subscribers. Although the cost sounds expensive, if you are using Ancestry.comon a more or less daily basis it id great value for money for family historians who are just beginning their search to seasoned professionals. We would recommend the package to all aspiring genealogists and hope that there wil be more digital parish registers and wills added in due course.

As a Worldwide subscriber I would agree with just about everything in this review.
The one aspect it doesn't mention is the one that seems to generate a lot of criticism - ie the Trees. Although I have found a few useful leads in my own research from other people's trees, I have not put up one of my own because I don't want lazy people adding my research to their trees incorrectly. If they had to ask permission first, so that you could check their tree before allowing a link, I might reconsider.
Apart from that, I think Ancestry is excellent value for money (I'd give it 5 stars), especially as I need to search US records, but live in the UK.

“Some issues”

★★★★☆

written by on 29/02/2012

The biggest issues are poor transcriptions but you can ammend them.Sometimes it's a misread but others are consistant and really annoying like Holbron instead of Holborn and Hertfordshire is Suffolk I think it's because of American transcribers!? The list of records available at the side are NOT all of them, check your dashboard for updates or search direct from outside FTM. Best used in conjunction with other sites to help locate missing entries. Interesting collection of records but you need to keep checking for updates. Use sideways thinking if you can't find your entry. Family Tree Maker interface is good and easy to use with instant merge but be aware not all facts will be added automatically. I researched pricing compared with other sites and this worked out best for me but do use the free searches elsewhere to guide you when you lose someone. Shoebox facility is useful. Do not take other peoples trees as accurate check them!

“United kingdom has great records”

★★★★☆

written by Garfield1799 on 29/02/2012

Ancestry.co.uk is the best source on the net for UK records however there are a lot of useless record collections but at least they have a broad selection. It has the best collection of UK census records online and amazing parish register collections. For improvements:- Add more parish registers for all counties, along with scans of the original documents as this is an amazing feature. Concentrate on accurate transcribing of these registers and census records as there is an infinite number of mis-transcribed data, Expansion of Irish records mainly parish register records for Ireland. On the whole ancestry is worth the money and the best/only source available on the net! Keep up the good work and make sure to expand what you already have guys! Garfield1799

“Very good overall but in need of a few improvements!”

★★★★☆

written by on 29/02/2012

Ancestry is a great tool for researching your family history. It has many records that other sites don't e.g. WW1 records, and they are always adding more. I definately prefer their family tree builder to any other (GenesReunited tends to crash all the time), although I think FindMyPast will soon catch up. My only major concern about Ancestry, and in fact any other family history site, is the ease for other members to simply copy another members entire tree without doing any research themselves and then this is repeated by many other members, so the end result is many family trees that are completely wrong. I would very much like to see more privacy settings such as, allowing members to show their tree to others but hiding their media gallery, or allowing members to only show certain lines of their tree to others. It's not due to an unwillingness to share, but simply trying to prevent incorrect information becoming fact through mistakes being copied repeatedly. Overall I would definately recommend this site to someone interested in family history but the advice I would give is cross referencing is key! Always use as many websites, record offices, and other sources of information as possible to form your family tree and remember it's fun to do this! You tend to lose that when you simply copy someone elses tree. :)

“Good but some annoying flaws”

★★★★☆

written by on 29/02/2012

Overall Ancestry is a very useful site for genealogists. My main gripes are that a lot of transcriptions are appallingly bad. Clearly transcribed by people with no knowledge of the country from which the records come. My second gripe is the 'New Search' results. For example you might search for a female from a certain area and the results may show males at the top of the list from a completely different area than the one you have specified. You may find a closer match at the bottom of the page! There is the ability to use the 'old search' which gives more accurate search results and I can't understand why, if the New search is a better version it gives worse results. Ancestry's rivals Find My Past search is far easier to use and gives superior results in a simple and easy to read list.

“West Yokshire Parish Records”

written by sunscreen on 29/02/2012

These records have been a great help to me and have found a lot of info. But the transcribing is really bad, loads of the surnames are totally wrong - even though they are not difficult to read! Wouldn't it make sense for anyone doing this to be from the appropriate County etc? I have corrected loads already

“Records saved to my tree”

★★★★☆

written by Redgirl5 on 29/02/2012

I think Ancestry is one of the best genealogy sites on line and I have been using it for many years, however I have one gripe and that is that I find it annoying that any records I have already paid to view and then stored on my tree or that I have saved for later evaluation can only be viewed during a subscription! If I have already paid for a record and saved it I do feel that I should be able to access it on my tree at any time. I cannot afford to subscribe for annual membership and so use a pay per view sub as and when I can afford it.

“Ancestry Made Easy”

★★★★☆

written by on 22/02/2012

Ancestry was drawn to my attention just after Christmas 2010 when I decided to take up the option of a free trial. I was immediately fascinated by the site and it's capabilities so signed up for an annual premium membership, which I have just renewed for a second year. The Ancestry site very cleverly connected me to other previously unknown family members researching the same 'tree'. I have discovered many living cousins I didn't know I had, including one whose dedicated research has enabled me to trace my roots back to 1592. It has been exciting to discover ancestors who worked on the land at Downton Castle and Berrington Hall following in the footsteps of Capability Brown who laid out the Hall grounds. Yet another who worked at Elton Hall where the eminent botanist, Thomas Knight, carried out horticultural fruit breeding experiments. (Ancestry Tithe and Census Records.) Other Ancestry records have highlighted ancestors' occupations, amongst which are coachman, groom, gentleman farmer, market gardener, miner, railwayman, preacher, gun forger, writer, servant, cook and dairy maid. The War Records are sobering. Relatives have been lost both on land and at sea. I have discovered records that have been singed around the edges due to a fire in the storage facility and details of war memorials remembering, mostly, young relatives lost in both World Wars. On Passenger Lists I have found the names of relatives who emigrated to far away lands on liners such as the Vulcania. Also, a fascinating section, unimaginable today, relating to Bastardy Trials. Wills and Probate provide another useful source of information. It seems that chairs, cushions and cattle were valued equally once upon a time! I am a dedicated fan of Ancestry, but I have only scratched the surface of the huge amount of material on the site. I sometimes feel overwhelmed and butterfly from place to place - in the end not really getting what I hoped for. When the 1911 Census came on line I was thrilled; I thought I would be able to fill in some irritating gaps. In actuality, because of the volume of users, the site seizes up. The 'help' facility does not always seem to answer my question. I would like to download everything I have recorded so far onto disc but don't see how this can be achieved. Maybe I am asking my question in the wrong way? These are very minor, and I hope, constructive criticisms. Overall I love Ancestry.co.uk to the detriment of all the other loves of my life - my partner, my family, my gardening, my writing ...........

You can find information on your grandfather where he lived ETC, and if you delve deep enough you can even go further back, so give it a go. As far as I know, you can try ancestry.com as a trial.

Hi Jill. Just to add my two ha'p'orth ... the more you know about your relative before you start, the more chance of getting the exact information you need. It's highly probable there will be more than one person with the name. Do you know his date of birth? Do you know if he married and his wife's maiden name? Do you know the names of their children? This sort of information might have been on his service record. If he died in action, the Commonwealth Graves Commision may have the location of his burial place. If he lived around London, the Electoral Registers are available which would show his residence at various times. But be careful! Once you start, there will be no stopping you! Good Luck....LesD.

I agree with LexDx answer - the more you know, the better your chances. If your Grandfather had an uncommon name or a middle name this may help. Having an idea of his year or date of birth might help. Any info you have about sort of Forces unit he was with will certainly help, eg was he army, navy, merchant navy or RFC/RAF ? If he was army then what regiment or corps was he in, and what rank ? Ancestry often offer 14 days free trials, and some Libraries offer free access to Ancestry. But Ancestry may not be your best answer. If you are lucky the Medal Rolls at The National Archive (TNA) may give you the answers - this is accessible online, and some info is free, or his war record (if available) or other records may incur a small cost. Find My Past is also another good option and their data is often more reliable than Ancestry. Good luck.
