“Over 100% Premium Increase Following Claim”

★★★☆☆

written by on 05/04/2013

I have held a policy with VetsMediCover for 2 years and, until recntly would agree with other comments regarding the excellent policy and service of the company. Unfortunately I had to made a claim in 2012 for a major operation for my dog. The cost was less than half the £10,000 allowed per annum, the money was promptly and efficiently paid out within 2 weeks of the claim. However, a month before my next premium was due, I received a letter to say that to take into account my claim's history my premium will rise from the proposed £336 per annum to £720 per annum, an increase well over 100%. This is an impossible high rise to budget for, particularly for a pensioner in her 80s. What I did find scary is that when I spoke to one of the renewal team they did not seem to be aware that they were pricing many of their clients out of insurance cover and those are likely to be those that most need it. Very few of us make unnecessary claims for our pets and I am willing to pay an higher excess to keep premiums manageable, vet cost now are usually well over the exisiting excess and I never claim. Pet Insurance Companies should find out what their clients prefer from insurance over, a £10,000 fee allowance is of little use if the premium rises too high for clients to afford. Less cover on complementary therapy and a choice on excess would allow clients to get the most important treatments covered.

“Big price hike after 1st year”

★★★☆☆

written by on 12/02/2012

We insured our dog with Vets Medicover last February as I was particularly impressed with the 'lifetime' cover idea. We made a small claim (just over £100) in April which after a lot of problems with Whitehorse, their claims admin company, was paid out. To be fair, I believe that they have now changed to another company but that didn't help my experience. I have just received a letter telling me that due to escalating costs of claims, my renewal premium will be £28 per month (this is a hike of £10 per month - over 55%)! It may well be 'lifetime' cover, but at what cost?

I wrote the above review and wish to slightly revise it as I have since found out that similar cover is much the same price anywhere. It's really the prices that vets charge we should all be complaining about - anyway, I've decided to stay with vets medicover.

Oh my goodness!! The audacity of this company to blame vets prices for their whopping great increase in premiums. What a load of bull!! They´re putting them up because people are claiming and they´re therefore making less millions.

They´re luring us all in, and just WAITING for us to make a claim and therefore be stuck with their ever inflating prices for the life of our pets.

People... jump ship whilst you still can! Find lifelong cover with another established insurer and box clever with what you claim for. Also, make sure you have "continuous cover" with them and don´t swap between insurers, otherwise you may find that that little spot on Polly´s tummy 6 years ago will be a "pre-existing" condition when you need to claim for a skin cancer.

I hardly think a niche broker specialising in high level pet insurance is raking in millions by ripping off their customers. Not a great business model - they'd shortly find themselves with no custom. The reality is that premiums can't stay low when the cost of medical treatment (and everything in general) is going up. I work for a medical insurance broker (people, not pets!) so I get rather narked when folk tar all insurance providers with the same brush. I think I'm going to go with Vets Medicover for my new dog - looks good to me.

“I have just taken out a new policy with vetsmedicover,...”

I have just taken out a new policy with vetsmedicover, but I am going to cancel it because I am not happy about the direct debit agreement. I object to having to take out a credit agreement with a finance company "PREMIUM FIRST" to pay my direct debit. I would rather pay my premium in full with a cheque or debit card.

I found this review not helpful because...the policy content and provision is more important than how the monthly payment is to be administered

its common practice in insurance for a third party company to process direct debits. Especially if they are a small business.

If you go through the online system there is an ption to pay annually. Plus they do not charge for credit if you want to pay monthly. I have my home and motor insurance on monthly payment optionu which are credit agreements, same difference as far as I can see.

My only concern is that by taking out a policy with vetsmedicover and paying by direct debit, it appears you are agreeing to a loan for the annual fee. This 3rd party loan is with a company called Creation Consumer Finance Ltd.They then pay vetsmedicover and you repay the loan to Creation Consumer Finance?? The reviews online about this company are terrible, from customer service to charges levied. Anyone any ideas or views on this??

As far as I can see this is the same as paying for youri motor or home insurance monthly, which are usually on a credit agreement. Plus there is no charge for credit. No experience of Cdreation, but I think Hey do a lot of this type of stuff.
