“Remember the Monty Python Dead Parrot Sketch!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by HB66 on 03/04/2023

I was sent two blueberry bushes as a gift. One was healthy the other not. Nonetheless, I planted it in accordance with the instructions but 6 weeks later it is clearly dead. Trying to get a replacement is like the famous Dead Parrot sketch from Monty Python. No amount of pictures of brown stalks and dead leaves or buds will make them accept it is dead. All I want is a replacement plant but instead I get veiled accusations of not doing things properly even though the other bush is flourishing. Definitely will not use this company again.

I ordered a gift for my mother more than a month in advance. It hasn't arrived and I've not had any response back from the team when I reached out online earlier this week. Its missed her birthday and I'm very disappointed.

“Special anniversary rose”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/06/2020

My husband and I received a Golden Anniversary rose from our family by this company and while the packaging was most impressive , the rose itself was a pathetic, flimsy specimen and had two thin flower buds one of which was broken. I complained to the company and was asked to submit photographs which I did. The reply was and I quote “I’ve spoken to our gardener and he has said the following, “ the rose looks fine,we try to cut off all flower buds before postage as this can happen however these little buds missed the trim”: the roses are mostly cut back now after their first flowering , this plant is best trimmed back and planted and given a good drink“ unquote This seems a very strange way to prepare and present a special anniversary gift I am an experienced gardener , hold an horticultural qualification and I would not recommend anyone using this company to anyone

“Customer Services Are RUDE. Received a stick.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cunningham422 on 22/04/2020

I ordered a Jasmine plant off of NOTHS from The Gluttonous Gardener. I will say delivery was quick but upon opening the packaging the item was AWFUL. I had bought this as a gift during quarantine for my parents anniversary. When she opened the box she thought it was a JOKE GIFT. It was literally a STICK IN A DIRTY, MOSS COVERED POT. It didn't look like the soil had ever seen water in it's life either. I emailed customer services asking about returns and saying how disappointed I was in the item after receiving it and they told me that the supermarkets sell them FAKE when I said they were twice the size of this and LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE. The images are NOT what you will receive and I even expected a little worse than the pictures because adverts always look better than what you get, but this was RIDICULOUS. The item I got personalised I understand I cannot get my money back for but the box is so very flimsy I could poke it and break part of it off. The customer services just said they want me to pay them £7 to return it to them too after receiving something SO awful.

“Altogether a Terrible Experience ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hogan34 on 09/07/2019

Ordered two lemon trees from them as thank you presents for both sets of parents at our wedding. Though the boxes looked beautiful, when they were opened BOTH pots were smashed and the lemon trees looked sad. Unfortunately they were opened in front of our wedding party (50 people) so not a good experience. My mum rang the company in tears the following day and was offered a new pot or a £6 refund (the price of the pot), I too complained and was offered the same with minimal apology. Don't order from here - much better options available and better customer service elsewhere. Overall a terrible experience and wouldn't use them again.

Ordered a passion flower arrived in a lovely crate but the plant was very small and didn't survive 6 months in a garden where everything else flourished. Top prices very poor quality avoid.

“Dreadful fig 'tree'”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jyfkjdwg on 29/06/2018

Ordered the Extra Fig Crate as a birthday gift. Very disappointed and embarrassed to see the pathetic specimens they sent. Clearly the packers were so ashamed of the fig 'trees' that they put two in the crate instead of one. As I pointed out to them, the picture (which is all you have to go on when buying online) was completely misleading. All I wanted was an apology but what I got was the usual 'sorry it didn't meet your expectations', the clear implication being that my expectations were the problem not their product. Then they wanted photographic evidence that two were sent, as this was unusual. They had the order number so could, indeed should, have spoken to their packers. Can you imagine going back to the person to whom you had just given a present to ask for photographs to support a complaint you had made to the supplier? Both the quality of the gift and the company's response were dreadful. As you cannot trust that their website gives a good indication of what you are buying and you cannot inspect before buying, I would recommend not using the Gluttonous Gardener for presents.

“WARNING : This is not a reputable company.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by seapea1 on 28/09/2017

My son ordered a rose in a presentation pack to give to his mother on his wedding day. The order included a presentation plaque with the date of the wedding on it. The rose was unpacked by myself the day after the wedding and found to be in a poor condition with browning leaves. Despite my best efforts, it subsequently died. Given the nature of the packing and the date of the wedding, it is obvious that the rose would not be unpacked for at least 24 hours after the wedding. It is Glutinous Gardeners responsibility to ensure the rose would survive until this date. That should be the whole ethos of their business. After many emails, including a photo of the dead rose, the best Glutinous Gardener were prepared to offer me was a replacement rose. However, I was expected to pay £8 delivery costs. Obviously, I could go to a reputable local garden centre a buy a rose of known quality for less than this. Also, the most one would expect to deliver a rose from a reputable on-line nursery would be less than £5. I told Glutinous Gardener that the rose should be replaced without cost to myself and I would take this matter further. They were adamant they were not prepared to protect their reputation by resolving this matter to my satisfaction. I note from other reviews that I am not the first person to experience this problem. I also note that on the Gluttonous Gardener web site, there are many reviews from the media. Most of these newspapers and magazines have consumer investigation departments. I intend to write to each in turn asking for their advice.

For the amount of money involved and the reason for the purchase of the road ,really surprised company did not protect their name.

Rather concerned to read the reviews regarding this company. We received a rose bush for our golden wedding anniversary in August last year (2017) It is not a healthy specimen. I contacted company when we received it, was told I should have planted it sooner but if after I had done so it didn't grow I was to contact them and they would be happy to replace. It's been planted since last September and hasn't grown at all. I have sent photos and I am hoping to get a reply in the next few days, from what I have read in the reviews I'm not sure I can expect good service.

“Very dissapointing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by randommoz on 12/06/2017

I purchased this expecting a large grown plant. Whilst very well packaged the plant it self was tiny and only worth a small fraction of the large price. Don't use, when I complained their response was it will grow! I should hope so, doesn't excuse the ridiculous price! Go to a garden centre!

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback we are obviously firstly incredibly sorry that you were not happy with the gift that you were sent.

Our gifts are all individually hand packed with a lot of love and care in to our large wooden gift boxes, complete with a gift message and delivered on the date of our customers choosing to any UK address on the date of their choice which are services which are not offered by garden centres. We would never deny that you can buy cheaper roses however we are not simply offering a rose on it's own in a pot our service is much more which is why their is a premium price which reflects the time and care that goes in to each of our gifts. Please email us with photo's of your rose and we would be happy to help, this is the first time we have been made aware of your disappointment.

Kind regards
Sally

“Moroccan tea set christmas gift”

★☆☆☆☆

written by suedavey on 14/01/2015

Like recent reviewers very disappointed.i prepaid for international delivery to Germany as a Christmas gift for my sister in law.Which I ordered in November and specified the date to be delivered 22nd December it eventually arrived on the 30th! A damaged box and a dead plant. I have purchased several times in the past from the glut and had always been happy with the gifts and service. Not this time they don't even answer my communication with them!very poor customer service and quality of gifts A very upset customer especially as it was a Christmas gift.I will not be returning & think I'm quite within my rights to again request a full refund. I would have liked to know that paying for specified delivery date internationally was not guaranteed or that it would arrive safely,& that the contents would not be damaged.

“Appalling”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 157Finnegan on 21/09/2014

Our son bought us an anniversary rose from these people. It arrived in an impressive crate, but the plant itself is tiny and looks unlikely to survive the winter. A normal garden centre wouldn't even have it on display let alone price it at nearly £50. As others have commented, this is a complete rip-off. The firm can only get away with it because the purchaser cannot see the goods, and since they are sent as a gift, may never find out how poor they actually are. I intend to pursue the matter with trading standards, but meanwhile our advice is steer well clear.

Sallygolland's Comment

We are firstly incredibly sorry that you were clearly unhappy with the service and product you received from ourselves, I can assure you that this is not the normal experience of a Gluttonous Gardener customer. The roses that you will have received will vary in appearance depending on the time of year received, in the summer months they will look more impressive and when autumn arrives they will be cut back to promote stronger, bushier growth for the next season.

We would never compare ourselves to a garden nursery, nor would we deny that the same plant can be purchased at a lower cost. We are a gift company and as such offer a value added service, from our beautiful packaging to having the gift delivered on the date of the customer choice to any address accompanied with a gift message and are certainly not looking to rip any of our customers off, a huge amount of time and care goes into each and everyone of our packages and the satisfaction of both our customers and recipients is extremely important to us.

We would always encourage communication if the customer/recipient is unhappy with their gift. We will always if the plant is unhealthy or has failed replace the plant with another healthy specimen.

It is never our intention for any of our recipients to be unhappy with their Gluttonous Gardener gift. We do not have any of your order details so I am unable to see what communication has taken place between yourselves and our company but I can assure you that your experience is not normal, we have been around for over 20 years and this has been built on many of the recipients of our gifts going on to becoming customers.

Kind regards and again our apologies for the disappointment this gift has clearly caused you.

“Please avoid this site at all costs!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by roforsh on 27/08/2014

The Gluttonous Gardener and Not on the High Street operate on a principle of maximum profit for minimum product. Like other reviewers, we were duped by website images and descriptions that did not accurately resemble the product. A rose that cost £10 on the high street was sold for £44 on "Not on the High Street" and then further costs for postage which would have been around £4.50 with a company like Hermes at a staggering £9 with this rogue company. The rose is abysmal, small and lacking maturity. The response from the company has been derisory. AVOID AVOID AVOID !!!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, we are extremely sorry that you are clearly so disappointed with your gift. We have been in contact with yourself with regards to this order and have politely replied to your emails as to explain that we are not a plant nursery, our gifts all hand packed to order in our beautiful gift boxes, they are then delivered on the date of the customers choice to any UK address and delivery is £5.95 not £9 as you have stated.

We can assure you that a huge amount of time and car goes into packaging our gifts and getting them out to the recipients and feel they offer value for money and a service that no garden centre would be able to offer.

The rose you have received we can assure you is of a very good quality and will continue to thrive for many years to come, they naturally look different throughout the year, it will be stronger and bloom again next year.

Kind regards

“Total Rip Off.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by qfCoffey330 on 29/03/2014

Latin names hyped up for a common blackthorn hedge plant worth in total about £1.50 from hedging suppliers. Free if you know where to look. Wrapped in a hessian bag with fancy labels hiding in a box of wood shavings. The sloe chutney is available for £3.95 from Yorkshire company. £50.00 in total including postage. I am sad my child was so taken in. It was a gift for Mother's Day. Possibly the worst one I have ever received. I could have planted a whole hedge round an acre for that. I would have liked to have known what he intended to buy but gifts are given with love. The thought of him wasting money upset me so much I have been driven to review. I give this no stars whatsoever.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback we are extremely sorry to see that you were so clearly disappointed with your gift, I can assure you this is far from how we would have hoped you would feel. A great deal of time and care is put in to the packaging, presentation and contents of our gifts all of which are hand packed by ourselves. We would never deny that you could not buy the individual contents of the gifts cheaper however we are a gift company not a plant nursery and as such we have delivered the gift on the desired date of your son, complete with a gift message and beautifully hand packed in our large wooden crates, and so your son was making use of our service as well as our products. We do hope however that your sloe bushes are now growing well, I can assure that you that the satisfactions of our customers and recipients is extremely important to us.

“Not worth the money”

written by on 12/01/2013

I ordered the Moroccan Tea Chest for my Mum at Christmas. The packaging was lovely but that was where it ended. For my £35 she got a tiny mint plant, 2 cheap looking Moroccan glasses, a bag of tea and a bag of sugar. I could have bought all these myself and had change from a fiver. Very disappointing.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, we are incredibly sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the gift you received, obviously this is the opposite reaction of what we strive to achieve with our gifts. At this time of year the mint plants are dormant which is why they are slightly smaller but come spring once the weather starts to warm up a little then they will very quickly put on lots of new growth and provide the lucky recipient with many delicious cups of Moroccan Mint Tea. Obviously a lot of time and effort goes into producing our gift, each and everyone is hand packed to order and so aside from the contents within the gift we are also providing a premium service that ensures your gift is delivered to any UK address on the date of your choice with a gift message looking fantastic, the quality of the products within is also very important and great care is taken in which products we use. If you would like to discuss this further you can contact us at [email protected] with your order number.

“Do not use if you require your delivery promptly”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/03/2012

The GG website makes a number of claims about speedy and efficient delivery and items ordered before 12 being delivered the next day. This was not my experience. My items were ordered before 12 and not delivered the next day. Their customer service, when I tried to respond this, was poor. I suggest you use another provider; the GG cannot be relied upon.

Thank you for leaving your feedback on The Review Centre I am extremely sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations when shopping with us.

Without your order details I am afraid I am unable to look into your order further so if you would like to email [email protected] with your order number from our website then we will make sure that it is investigated. It is extremely rare for us not to dispatch an order on time. As a company we have been offering nominated day delivery for many years and pride ourselves on being able to offer speedy and reliable delivery but obviously when this isn't achieved we will make sure that we compensate in some way to make up for the disappointment.
