Just outside of Jakarta is the town of Bogor where the fabulous Taman Safari Park is located. It took about 2.5 hours for us to get there, but we inadvertently traveled there during a holiday at the end of Ramadan, so I assume that the traffic would be much better normally. It's an interesting drive for most of the way for those of us from western countries, too. Next time we're in Jakarta we'll take a couple of days out and stay in Bogor to spend more time at the park and to see the nearby water palace.
The park itself was ridiculously inexpensive - a car of 5 people plus a driver cost about AU$50 to enter and we were able to get VERY close up to antelope, tigers, lions, hippos, elephants, rhino, monkeys, etc etc. For a nominal amount you can also ride an elephant. There are inexpensive snack foods available there, which we had, but we didn't eat at the restaurant there due to time restrictions, so we can't comment on that.
One thing that we found a bit below par by our standards were the toilets, but that's just because we're not used to them. They were very wet and not clean, and even though there were a couple of western style toilets available there were no doors on the cubicles. Ah, the joys of travel!
We'll definitely go back and as I said, we'd spend more time in Bogor and at the park itself, it's great value and loads of fun.
