“I've had this phone one and a half years now. I bought...”

★★★★★

written by NickXX. on 19/04/2003

I've had this phone one and a half years now. I bought a new 6610 last week, but will continue to use the 8850 as a 2nd phone. Basically it looks amazing, I can't state this enough. Look after it and it'll look amazing for years to come - the brushed aluminium design will never grow old. Mine has 2 or 3 small scratches on it, but generally looks new.

As far as underneath the shell goes, it's an 8210 with white LEDs. Software is pretty old now, but has T9 text input, an irda port, calenendar, etc.

It's pretty resilient against general misuse tho. I've spilt beer over mine NUMEROUS occasions, dropped it, sat on it, etc, etc. Never has this directly caused a problem. Considering this phone is the type of object which shouldn't move from your office desk, I'm quite impressed how it's handled student life.

I had to get a new phone for several reasons. After about a year, the screen started flickering on and off - I guess a contact started going dodgy (beer/dust seeping in through the shell). Anyway, I sent it off to Nokia who replaced something, and the problem was back in a couple of months. I guess I could fix it myself, but I can't be bothered at the moment now that I have a new phone. Also, the back shell of the phone doesn't fit properly and rattles. I fixed this by lining the inside of the case with masking tape so it fits nice and snug - but you really shouldn't have to do this on a premium phone. Finally, the phone is old, it doesn't have WAP/colour screen/etc. which you can't blame it for (especially as it's over 3yrs old), but I thought it was time to get a new phone.

Just a word about it's replacement - the 8910. The 8910 is, yes, made out of titanium as opposed to aluminium which will probably make it a bit more resistant to being thrown around. However, the 8910 is a) bigger, b) heavier (by 20g), c) uglier (I doubt anyone will disagree) than the 8850. The features list really isn't much longer either.

Anyway, it'll probably be the best phone i'll ever own, the sleek aluminium shell, the range of features (for it's time), it's TINY and LIGHT - it's smaller than the 6610 I bought last week, and only 91g, which is less than most phones today (which are 3yrs younger). So yeah, ahead of its time. If you don't need more features than phone calls and txts - both things it does very well, then this phone will last forever if you look after it. There isn't a better looking phone you can buy - it certainly won't be going out of fashion for a long long time.

“The Nokia 8850, along with the 8890 is, for me,...”

★★★★★

written by Tidy Nokias. on 25/09/2002

The Nokia 8850, along with the 8890 is, for me, without doubt, the best mobile phone on the market.
The only negative points i could think of when asked above, were the reception sometimes isn't as good as it should be and it can get scratched easily if you mis-treat it.
More stylish than any other phone out there and being a Nokia, testing and making / receiving calls is a breeze as ever.

Forget all this DigiCamPhone phone junk, a phone should be made with 'calls & texting' in mind, which is exactly what this phone is pioneered by.

Class handset, class features, class looking.

“I have owned my nokia 8850 for approximately 12...”

★★★★★

written by SJW. on 14/01/2002

I have owned my nokia 8850 for approximately 12 months. There is no doubt that the phone is a good phone. It's a Nokia; what more can I say? No doubt nearly every other review has commented on the features of the phone, so I won't bother going into that - You know them all by now.
The 8850 is gorgeous. The backlight's colour is eye-catching and makes the phone stand out from the crowd. However, after 12 months of heavy use, the phone is showing signs of wear. The Nokia badge below the speaker is almost completely silver now as the black paint disappears day by day. The sliding cover has scratched the keys terribly. The scratches are very deep and have removed the chrome plating. They make the keys look dirty, which can be embarrassing! Although this is to be expected after 12 months of use, the scratches started to appear after 3 days. I also feel that you expect a better quality finish on a flagship model such as this.
The phone performs faultlessly on the whole. The software does hang from time to time, but this is extrememly rare and usually happens when I'm working faster than the phone... Good things come to those who wait!
If you buy your phones for their looks, then buy the 8850. It will still look good in years to come... provided you're gentle with it. If you want a phone that's more hard-wearing, then I suggest you buy the 8210 which has exactly the same software and has Xpress-on covers that can be replaced when they start to look shabby. Of course, you could always buy the new 8310 if you're willing to spend the ammount of money an 8850 costs.

This nokia 8850 phone really is the dog's b******* of mobiles. Believe me when i say you will fall in luv with it, people will chat on about it not having enough features, i say garbage to that. It is a phone people. it is there to phone people, and text people, and it does these 2 things better than any phone i have ever seen, and to think that i bought this phone brand new, untouched for £75 6 months ago with NO contract, makes it all sooooo much sweeter. GEt this phone now, but don't get no contract cos they will rip you off.
PEACE
P.s THAT backlight really is a wonder to behold.

written by Major Sharpe. on 02/01/2002

Just bought my new Nokia 8850 and all I can say is that this phone is daaaarrrrkkkkkkkk! If this phone were a woman it would be Sophie Blake, Kate Groombridge and Dido all rolled into one - Grrr!
More substantively the features are mainly in the Nokia 6110/50, 3210 etc vein. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing particularly revolutionary either. Only gripe, as mentioned, is that my old Nokia 7110 had a far greater sms capacity and speedier typeface, but so what? This phone's a babe!

er why do you seem to think that pay as you go customers cannot get hold of these phones??? All they have to do is buy a offline 8850 and put their sim card in it so then it will be on pay as you go. Simple. Thats what I always do when I want a new phone because my pre pay tariff cannot be matched by ANY contract. Anyway no-one would want this phone now that the 8310 is out.

I'm sorry...but having read the review I disagree. this phone can easily be converted to pay as you go..as previously mentioned. As for being common...this phone is no way near worth the price stated...it is very outdated now and nokia don't make these models anymore as they have been discontinued. The flagship model and it does not even have wap....what an absolute joke. Beauty is defin skin deep with this phone..granted it looks good but if ppl and 'birds' are that shallow then....pretty much suited to each other.

Andy, you are right for sure. Pay as you go ruins phones as it is the chance for any random charver to get their hands on the phone. I had a V.3688 which cost me £380 back in summer 99' and I had to get rid of it last year because it came out on pay as you go. Although now bought a Nokia 8890 for the cred, as the 88XX are never going to come onto pay and go tariffs so there is no chance of being common.

I have had a Nokia 6210e for 14 months, and as a Business Phone this is the nuts, so I've kept it to use as a Carphone. But the Nokia 8850......you have a choice, buy a Ford Mondeo or a TVR. Good looking things COST MONEY, so if you want to blend in with the rest of the Nokia Nerds, go spend fifty quid on an 8210!!!

LOL...Why do ppl automatically assume that having this phone...somehow qualifies them for being special from sll the other nokia users. The basics are simple...it is a poor phone for the money involved..(unless you can but it cheap) and to myself and other tech savvy people out there..it never ceases to amuse us the attitude involved. When truly apart form the sleek design the 8310...T68i..6310i are far better prospects. This phone is not ALL THAT..far from it..save your money folks.

Yeah, I bought the phone for looks and size. It looks amazing, and it's tiny - smaller than the 6610 I bought last week (produced 3yrs after the 8850 appeared). The phone functions well for phone calls and texts. If you want the best looking phone ever made (and a LOT of people will agree with me here), and you don't use WAP/games/cameras, etc. Then this is the phone for you. If you need these features then buy a different phone. But what this phone does, it does well.

The Original review is accurate, the Guy who commented afterwards is totally wrong. I am assuming that the original review marked the phone on its sleek and stylish looks, as opposed to Feature/Benefits, which is all SOME people seem interested in. Its a Phone, you talk through it. If you want WAP/Bluetooth, go buy something else, but on appearance, I support the original comments!

“I LOVE this mobile phone :D This is a lovely phone,...”

★★★★★

written by Nick. on 03/11/2001

I LOVE this mobile phone :D This is a lovely phone, this is probably the nicest mobile on the market at the moment. The only (seriously, the only 'fault') would be the SMS feature. On the Nokia 7110, you could archive messages and hold like 150 texts. On the Nokia 8850, you can only hold 10 messages or something, which just takes getting used to.

Other than that minor complaint, this phone is the best!

9/10 for features!!!! You are kidding aint ya! I would probably give it four. The features on this fone went out with the arc just compare it to a modern fone like the 8310 and you will see what I mean. Hell the features on this fone are no better than those on a 3210.

the nokia 8850 is the best mobile phone i reckon, the titanium case makes it look great. This phone is obviously one of those classic phones that would never fade away, and to prove it, have a look at the price... it has not dropped by much even though it has come out for a long time. And look at all the other phones, they have dropped rapidly in price.
The nokia 8850 remains the best and im sure it will for a long time... have you seen the GOLD EDITION of the nokia 8850? fab!!! but the thing is, i think it costs double the normal price! ouch!

But definately worth the £200 more for those who like to have a phone that not many people even get to touch.
