We are a small self-catering complex and recently switched to Opus for our electricity supply. We are beginning to have problems with them and I was surprised to find this site with so many negative reviews. I started this review headed ‘Amateur’ but now I am not so sure. I noticed that we are being charged VAT at 20% and VAT notice 701/19 clearly identifies self catering as one of the 5% exemptions. Having e-mailed several times without response I called to speak to the Customer Services Manager who had signed the agreement. I was told that as head of department she does not speak to customers. An interesting position. It took many minutes and discussions with several staff ,members (who were polite enough) before I was told we had to be VAT registered to qualify. We have been in this business for over 10 years and with different electricity suppliers and we know this is not correct. A letter to the Customer Services Manager remains unanswered after 2 weeks and I have now raised a complaint with the Energy Ombudsman. If they do not know this simple issue, I would agree with most others – don’t waste your time with Opus.

I was only a customer of Opus for 3 months or so. They managed to overcharge for the whole period by such a margin that what had been paid by the end of month 2 was more than the total due. Needless to say, their demand for prompt payment don't apply when they are refunding. I would say they are best avoided. problem is, I haven;t come across a business electric supplier yet which isn't.

Like so many others writing reviews of Opus energy I am appalled at the massive rate hike from the end of my first 12 month contarct , an increase from 10p to 16p. They say they have written to me 3 times, I have received nothing, and now even though I have still got 5 weeks remaining I have been told that I am tied in to another 12 months at a 60% increase. I am aware now that this the terms state 90 adys notice or 30 from the renewal letter but having not received a renewal letter I decided to phone them only to be told too late!!!! Do not go with this company.
