Daybreakers, A Unique Take On A Vampire Story, And
Daybreakers, a unique take on a vampire story, and one that instantly intrigued me when I saw the trailer.
The first scene establishes this new, very eerie, twisted world brilliantly, en capturing the vampires as a dominant, hungry species; only now in suits and walking around as humans do, rather than lurking in castles and speaking in a rather comical Transylvanian accent.
The film follows Edward Dalton, a researcher attempting to create a substitute for blood; we quickly learn that he himself is quite fond of humans, and that he didn't even want to turn to vampirism in the first place, placing us in the hands of an interesting lead character. Edward runs into some humans and aids in there escape, which later leads to him meeting and joining with them.
The best thing about this film is that it takes the regular conventions of vampires and twists them into something imaginative and modern, making for a real unique viewing. An example of this would be the vampires that are deprived of blood in the film, who make brief appearances, turn into bat like creatures; an idea that plays on the vampire myths of old, and makes them modern, realistic and frightening.
On the downside, although the movie is fairly entertaining and doesn't slow throughout, it lacks any particularly good scenes, excluding the opening one. Also, the twists incorporated into this film, in my opinion, fail to have the effect of intriguing the viewer when we are made aware of them; which the film really did need to make it really worth watching.
With such an intriguing and exciting world created by the Hughes Brothers, I was very keen to see this movie, and ten minutes in, I was ready to continued to be amazed. But the movie had peaked far too early, and plodded along with mediocre twists throughout, but at least we got to see some cross bow action.
