“Viessmann Vitodens heat only boiler”

★★★★☆

written by Lardy1uk on 22/05/2016

We have installed over 100 of the Viessmann compact heat only boilers & have had one failure which was a duff combustion fan, this was dealt with promptly by Viessmanns own in house service engineer. This boiler uses there own designed & manufactures Inox-radial stainless steel heat exchanger which has a 10 year warranty. It should be noted that this heat exchanger is a "Full stainless steel" heat exchanger & not a cheaper (?) "Composite and stainless steel" heat exchanger as used by other boiler manufacturers .the boiler uses Pre-mix combustion, has an inbuilt water flow switch and can be installed with out pump "over run" meaning that the circulating pump does not need to be wired directly back to the boiler. The boiler does what it says on the tin and so far they have proved to be a very reliable boiler. How ever , yes there is always a how ever We installed one Viessmann combination boiler and tbh I am of the opinion that the engineering and build quality should be an embarrassment to any engineer or manufacturer.apart from the heat exchanger and the circulating pump head the rest is plastic and rubber. Dire imho, the question is do they actually sell this boiler model in Germany? I doubt it? i doubt that the Germans would buy it? (I am an rgi I have no connection or loyalty to any boiler manufacturer)

Yes, I agree with your above views on the materials used in the combi boilers, I did enquire about this with viessmann, prior to getting 5 boilers fitted, and they assured me as to the longevity of the components/reliability of the boilers, 5years on and no problems to report, anyway most boilers brands use the black plastic water housing, hence me purchasing viessmann, incidentally this same material has been used for over 20years in cars successfully and only cracking or leaking after 10+years , hope this helps!

“Well engineered quality boiler ”

★★★★☆

written by Salim786 on 17/12/2015

I'm just finishing the installation of my third viessmann 100 boiler, and am very impressed with the performance of the boilers, the first one is nearly 5years old now and has been absolutely superb and reliable, and impressively quiet, it's in a studio flat and cannot be heard at all in operation and heats all the rads hot in less than 5 minutes , once heated it modulates down to a whisper quiet tick over, the gas bill has dropped around 50% compared to the previously fitted Worcester Bosch junior, which was a noisy inefficient boiler,of which u can't even control the water temperature ! I think the negative reviews here are all down to 'poor installations' and fitters just taking them out of the box and fitting them to the wall!! I've fitted my 3 to clean flushed systems, along with magnetic filters and most important of all scale masters to the water inlet and hey presto! No problems and reliable service! The other problem is that most heating engineeres ere too brand loyal and only want to fit what they commonly fit, including my 'baxi' fitter plumber! Knowledge of these boilers is essential and they need to be commissioned properly and also be range rated to the radiator heating load, they are very well engineered and well built, it's evident when u remove the front cover and see the internal components, I've looked into all the brands before deciding on viessmann, and partly because of there commercial reputation, so far so good! However in future I will buy the vtodens 050 instead of the 100 model as it's the same power output but has a smaller casing and fits along side a kitchen cupboard better, my only complaint with the 100 models it's a bulky boiler unless it's hidden away in the loft'! I would love to give it 5stars but I won't as I think it's a bit pricey on spare parts, my only gripe. By the way I'm a mechanic and not a plumber gas fitter!!

“Prince Edward Island Canada”

★★★★☆

written by Gaspereaux on 29/08/2015

Hi, we are building a new home, 1,400 sq. ft., on a slab, on the water, facing north on the island of PEI (the smallest Province of Canada pop. 140,000). It can be very cold in the winter and we do have high winds. My spouse is allergic to wood stoves, we are going with in-floor radiant heating ans a propane fire place. We do not have natural gas on the island and we import everything (oil & electricity). We pay the highest rates of electricity in Canada (15.9 cents per kwh). Oil sells for $0.76 a litre and propane $0.64 per litre. We want to stay away from oil and our supplier is recommending the Vitodens 100 WB 35 and adding the Combi Plus for water on demand. We are only 2 adults living here. I am reading the reviews here that the people that love it, really love it and the same is true for those who do not like it. We are not knowledgable in this and the company selling this and installing this here is very old reputable and available. Any thoughts.

I live in SW Ontario in a 2000 sq. ft. log home - and log homes are drafty! I have had a Vitodens 100 gas fired boiler for the past 2 years and I could not be happier with it. It is unbelievably quiet and costs less than half of what my old oil fired boiler cost to run. The only trouble I have had was I once let the batteries go dead in my wall thermostat which shut down the boiler. Put fresh batteries in and it fired back up.
By the way, ON has you beat on electricity costs - as of this month the peak rate goes over 19 cents per KwH!

“Works well in Canada - no complaints here.”

★★★★☆

written by on 12/03/2013

Our Vitodens 100 with Combi-Plus gives us plenty of reliable heat and DHW, despite our cold winters. Paying for a quality installation really is the key. Our installers provided a 1-1/2" circulation loop with a low loss header, and the rads tie into this loop. The installers also created a distribution manifold that allows us to control every rad in the house from the boiler location. Given that we no longer have a hot water tank, we naturally have to wait a minute for the DHW, but once the boiler is firing, the water is good and hot. The energy savings that this unit provide make-up for this small inconvenience. A reserve tank can always be added if instant hot water is desired (not an issue for us).Insulating the pipes also allows them to retain more heat to avoid the "cold water sandwich". There is sufficient DHW for a satisfying, hot shower, and the house was never cold during our harsh Canadian winter (-20 C). This little unit saved us a lot of floor space in our basement. No complaints here.

How large is your house. One company has recommended a Vitodens 1B-35 but another has recommended a Vitodens 2B-45. It's confusing!

“An efficient solid well made boiler !”

written by agile on 11/01/2012

I have installed about eight of the Vitodens 100 boilers and mostly the earlier WB1A version over the last 4-5 years. Taking an interest in what I install, I knew that the ignition units were giving faults ahd had been replaced with a revised version. On installation I replaced the old ignition units with the revised ones so my customers would not be inconvenienced. Out of the eight, one had a failed PCB after three days and two had the F5 fault. On one F5 I asked my friend to restart it every 15 minutes and after a couple of hours it fired up OK. Today I went to another F5 and sorted that out in a few minutes. Apart from those three problems there have been no other faults so I rate them as very reliable boilers. When installed by a Viessmann approved installer, as I am, these boilers have a five year warrantee!

Hi everyone.I am installing Vitodence 100 since they came to the North American market.Piping the boiler is very important in order to keep the fan motor and controller healthy. Most plumbers don,t know how to pipe this boiler. If they make a 1 1/2 boiler loop and run the boiler pump with the boiler contactor through this loop, none of the abover problems will happen.By the way the quality of the gas is very important to keep the heat exchanger free of any blockage which cause burning the fan.If you have any question you can ask me via [email protected]

Hi.
Ay advise would be useful please, a friend of mine has had the vitodens 100 gas condencing boiler fitted and she a problem.
When you turn the water on upstairs in the kitchen, (Yes it is upstairs) the water pressure downstairs reduces considerably especially the bath which resorts to a trickle.
The incoming water pressure has been checked and is fine.
Any advice would be helpfull.
Thanks Craig.

i bought this boiler (100 wb1b compact 26KW, Regular) and installed it 3 months ago, so still early days (hence only 4 stars) I researched exhaustively before deciding on it and I get the strong impression that these newer Compact 100s have been vastly improved over the older ones reported on this site. It was a piece of cake to install and seems very sensibly designed with quality components, i.e stainless steel heat exchanger.

Good value, (depends where you buy it from, I got mine from Plumbase).
It does the business, and anyway I would never ever buy any British made appliance...not ever! In my experience thay have all been poor quaity and expensive rubbish from my previous Baxi boiler to my old Hotpoint washing machine which disintegrated itself from the inside out after 19 months!

It is amazingly quiet, installed in the kitchen and the fridge freezer is noisier!

I have a Vitodens 100 combi and have been very happy with it. yes!! we had an initial problem with the heating / hot water diverta valve within the boiler. It was repaired very quickly and without fuss. There was a design fault with the valve and all those still in the factory were aparently changed and those out in the market place were rapidly repaired when becoming faulty.
With any product, people have problems, but i think that the backup service from Viessmann has been superb and!!!! Well!!!! I happen to like my boiler very much.....

Hi. I've got a Viessmann vitodens 111-w that isn't working properly. All the indications on the boiler itself look normal, and the hot water is working, but no heat is getting to the radiators. When I first fired it up for the season last week, a few of the radiators started to get hot but then since then there's been nothing. The pressure was low so I've increased that to 1.4 bars. Any suggestions? Could it be the diverter? Thanks

Every so often the hot water will go cold in the middle of running a shower or any of the other hot water faucets in the house. The plumber that installed it has no idea what the problem is and when he came to troubleshoot the problem it did not happen when he was at the house. Has any one had this happen and if so can you offer advice?

When I had this problem, it eventually transpired that the plumber who installed my boiler had not bothered to bleed the radiators properly, so air pockets were forming in them. It is a good idea to check the Viessmann site to see who the company's accredited plumbers are in your area. Even then, you might not be lucky immediately: For me, it was third-time lucky, after six years of endless problems.

Yes I think your fan is faulty. You could call viessmann and see if they do a fixed price call or find a decent local chap, but you want someone who if it is not the fan will credit the cost back and use it on the faulty component like the pcb.

It does not cope with putting out enough floor heat to put house to comfort temperature. Is my boiler undersized as it was suggested I need a larger one - maybe 150 or 180,000 btu unit? Please advise soonest. Many thanks.

check your actual underfloor heating pipes are adequate to give the heat out if your house isn't well insulated or your pipe work undersized then that's your problem the average house needs a small boiler its the hot water on combi that need big boilers in your case its system boiler I presume this is 35 Kw that should heat a very big house with ease so as your system been balanced is the heat going to easiest radiators or pipe work so not flowing through that area , that's what good plumbers are for if its not write ask your installer to sort it if he hasn't got the knowledge get some one who can don't waste money on new boiler , try Viessmann they are fantastic ask for advice of the experts . You may need bigger boiler but I am not convinced at start . I dont waste customers money so take care jumping the gun .

Another thoroughly irritating aspect of this dreadful boiler: unhelpful or no switch signage. The tags round the timeswitch clock have to pushed OUT for ON for the time periods you want. Next there is the tiniest little tag switch at the one-o-clock position adjacent to the clock. There are no switch position signs at all on mine but the three positions of the switch are from the left: OFF - TIMER - ON. So switch it to the central position and push the clock tags out for the period you want the heating on. At least that's how mine works. Of course yours may have been modified, "improved"........

I gave up with the timer when my boiler was installed. The installer and the 5 subsequent Veissmann accredited annual service engineers were unable to set the clock or explain how to set it! I work in the computer industry and don't usually fail to master technology but this one has me beat! The timer is now over ridden and the house heating controlled by a smart thermostat which manages time and room temperature and the hot water is permanently on and controlled by a tank stat. on a well lagged tank. I would recommend the same route for you if possible. Still very pleased with this boiler it has yet to put a "foot" wrong and achieves excellent efficiency.

Don’t know the Vitrodens 111 W but do know the Vitrodens 100W (there are two types) the W is a closed system with weather compensation. In my experience the boiler is very good (see my earlier review) but you need to be really careful about the quality of your fitter. My 100W is now over 4 years old and has not put a foot wrong + I recovered the entire cost of purchase and fitting in 18 months in gas saving vs my Vintage Potterton Kingfisher. Not sure how much the weather compensation saves as I just don’t notice it but the house is always comfortable and boiler just trickles along at 60c weather it is freezing or cool outside .

I have installed approaching 280 Viessmann Vitoden boilers and can honestly say that they are one of the most reliable appliances on the market. I have installed 5 Vitoden 111 heat-store boilers and they can produce an astonishing amount of hot water (as long as the incoming mains water pressure is good enough). Go for the UTBD 2RF wireless controller - it is excellent. Of the 280 boilers fitted we have had no mechanical failures, but make sure that you use a Viessmann accredited engineer so that you can extend the warranty period to 7 years for £50…………..bargain.

This is the Achilles of the sealed system! It’s not necessarily your boiler that is losing pressure, it could be any ware in your heating system. Many of us go through life without noticing the “leak” that most wet heating systems have because there is a tank in the attic (vented system) which tops itself up. When you go to sealed \closed system where you have to top it up yourself ….. you realise you lost some level of automation. When I changed to a closed system ….having witnessed lots of friends and family who were always calling in the plumber to fill the system and me when I demonstrated how to do it themselves (they found it easier to give me a call!) I thought I would not fall in that pit! So I asked my Plummer / Heating engineer if I could have it auto top up…… apparently it contravenes water board regulations to leave your heating circuited connected to your water supply! So the options appear to be leave your header tank in (provided it can provide 1 bar of head) or break the water boards regulation (with the added chance of boiler inhibitor poisoning as it back flows in to your water system) by fitting a permanent supply loop with a pressure regulator Or watch the gauge ………. And top up as required. I’m not a plumber or a heating engineer …and would like a better legal solution to this problem myself 1 Bar a day is excessive! Suggest you feel around your pipes and rad valves for leaks something will be wet ! Or it is the heat exchanger (or valves) in your boiler that are leaking, which you probably won’t see or feel Good luck, Mark
