“BROKEN after LIFETIME MAPPING update”

bought in2011 and working fine, came with lifetime map updates (more expensive option). I thought it was time to update the mapping that was included when i bought it. downloaded all required software and did the update. now it doesn’t switch on at all. Garmin want £38 to repair it. it wasn’t broken until their software was loaded on. so much for lifetime mapping updates. think Ill buy a TOM TOM
