“Do not buy from these dodgy car dealers”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hubbard359 on 23/11/2017

I brought a car from McCarthy cars, paying half of the sale and putting the rest on finance and had nothing but problems with it. We were told the car was semi automatic but drove the same as a fully automatic, never was the word easytronic mentioned or we would of researched this and found out the bad reviews. Straight away after collecting the car there was problems. The gears were struggling and taking to long to change. I did pop in and see them and was told this was normal for a semi automatic car. The headlight was full of condensation and the Air conditioning was not working. It was booked in to have the work carried out at their approved garage. After collecting they said they put a new Air conditioning condenser in, replaced the clutch and flywheel and replaced the headlamp backing. Things that were ticked ok on their 82 point RAC inspection. The car came back with more problem, groaning noise coming from the Air conditioning, a parking sensor was missing so not working, the key was broken and the gears still sounded like they were struggling to change. Also there was over an extra 20 miles on the clock, even though they said they didn't take it out for a test drive. The car was returned to have these problems sorted out and to check gear box again. When it was picked up we were told to turn the radio up so we wouldn't hear the Air conditioning groaning and the gears struggling. As I was still not happy with the way it was running, I paid for an RAC inspection. They told me the Air conditioning needed a new compressor unit, the gears were taking to long to change and the wheels were out of alignment. It was also stated that the car had, had a lot of repairs done on the body. So once again the car went back. This time they remapped the gearbox and said they had sorted out the Air conditioning which made no difference to the noise and the gears were slightly better for a couple of weeks. I was worried about the safety of children being in the car so I had it checked at a reputable Vauxhall garage, where the report came back with over £1,600 of work needing to be done. McCarthy cars wanted me to return it to their garage but I had, had enough so I contacted the finance company who sent out their independent inspector. They were very professional and after being inspected by them they put an uplifting order on the car because of all the problems and I eventually got my money back.

“Worst experience of our lives so far”

written by bakes13 on 29/05/2016

So it has been 3 weeks since my sons car was written of by this company on a test drive after a warranty repair! we had to claim on our own insurance to get our money back in a timely fashion as McCarthy's insurance company were dragging their heels. My son is still without a car as we have not been able to find a like for like replacement in the same price range! A family run business leaving a young lad without a car through no fault of his own in the middle of his University exams! they know nothing about family issues! He is seething and I don't blame him, he should be driving around enjoying his purchase right now instead of spending hours and hours searching for a replacement. An apology from the manager with no hint of returning our money was not good enough! Deal with these imposters at your own peril

Thank you for your honest feedback. We're really sorry that it took so long to resolve the claim via the insurers, we endeavour to fix any such future problems by reporting this feedback back to the insurance company. It is a very rare that we have an unhappy customer.

I did everything possible to chase up the claim in order to get the payout to you sooner. If you or your son need help finding a new Mini then please give me a call, we have had a new selection come in and we’d really like to bring you back on board as a happy customer.

I wish you all the best for the future and hope that you are able to find a suitable vehicle elsewhere if you choose not to speak to us.

If you would like to discuss this, please feel free to call me, Rob McCarthy on our business line.

He told me that Aviva would write to me with an apology exonoriting McCarthy cars in this incident and would call me in a week to discuss! Well that was at least six weeks ago and not had any thurther contact from him! Sums up your outfit to a tee!

“Arrogant customer care”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GarrettBerry on 29/05/2016

One of the most arrogant customer care I have ever seen! There was a BMW listed on the site and there was drastic difference in the market price (4k) to the advertised price (6K !!). I just inquired the reason behind the difference and they were so rude that they just hung up on me saying too bad you find it expensive! Also, I asked them if they had any cars in the range of 4-5K, to which he responded saying go have a look at the website. Rude! Arrogant! Wouldn't recommend this dealer one bit!

Hello,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've had this experience with us, we take pride in our customer service which is why it is terrible to hear. If you could send the details over to me in a private message then I'd really like to resolve this with our sales team.

We have a variety of vehicles at various prices and there are a number of reasons why the market value could be different. I'd really like to resolve this issue with you, so if you could give me a call on our landline, then I'd like to apologise and help you find the right vehicle.

“Stay well away!!”

written by Latte4567 on 23/09/2015

After buying a jeep from McCarthy Cars the 4x4 didn't seem to be working so I took it to my local garage (Banstead Road Garage) who checked the car to find the prop shaft had been removed so it only had front wheel drive, I was assured the car had recieved a full RAC inspection when I purchased the car, very obviously it hadn't. Be warned stay away and I will be contacting the RAC.

“£200 for a finance application!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 25/03/2013

They would like to charge you £200 deposit for a finance application which you will get back if unsuccessful. What a great way of doing business...

By Mccarthy Cars

Written on: 04/04/2013

Hi, I am James McCarthy from McCarthy Cars.

I thought I should explain why we ask for a deposit when taking details for finance.

We ask for the £200 deposit as a sign of commitment from the customer. Otherwise we have found that even when we get the finance accepted, the customer does not turn up to view the vehicle or to bring any necessary documents.

In fact we often find out that a lot of people with poor credit ratings phone numerous car garages trying to get finance. We can spend over 3 hours on each single application.

We do not profit from it. As you said in your review, you get the £200 back if you are unsuccessful. If you are successful it goes towards your deposit on the vehicle.

We do not make any charge for you to apply for finance. In fact we often spend a long time achieving finance for people who have previously had problems in the past.

If you would like to discuss this further, please call me on 020 8688 8086 or email [email protected]

“Extremely Unprofessional ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Annomous on 26/03/2012

I went to visit McCarthy Cars as i was interested in a car there, wanted to see what the deal would be to part exchange and we came to an agreement. I said to them that i would like to think about it and would the deal still be on the table if i was to call back first thing in the morning, and they said i could do so. We then travelled to the other branch to see what there stock was and what they could agree on and they told me the deal that i got was a good deal but he would honer it as the other colleague had already told me. I then asked them if i could go home sleep on it and phone back first thing the next day if i was interested in the deal. I then rang back at first thing in the morning and the told me that they were not interested any more as they changed there mind about the deal we had sorted and that now they were not interested in my car! I was completely shocked and disappointed that they just went back on there word and were also rude about it. So unprofessional.

“My wife and I went to look at the stock at Mccarthy on...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/05/2011

My wife and I went to look at the stock at Mccarthy on a Sunday afternoon this year. We were impressed with a rather nice Mercedes after test driving it. We talked to the salesman filled in a used car sales invoice and paid a £500 deposit. This we were told was a standard deposit to reserve and prepair the car.
However our financial situation changed overnight and we were unable to proceed with the purchase.
On contacting McCarthy at the start of business the next day to inform them of our decision I was told that our deposit was non refundable...
I was made to feel quite stupid by the salesman regarding this, even though I informed him that this was not explained during our visit.
On talking to Trading Standards, this practice it appears is legal, though very poor practice.
Mccarthy did however give us a voucher for the full amount of the deposit redemable with a year.
Eeerrr yeh, thanks then...
Not a bad little earner....£500 for nothing for them.

Makes perfect sense, and they kindly offered you a voucher. What bit of this doesn't make sense? Do you not understand how deposits work?

Not many dealers would of offered the voucher, in fact never heard of any company offering a voucher because of a change of heart, you lose your deposit and thats it.

“The 'comprehensive' after-sales service as stated on...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/09/2010

The 'comprehensive' after-sales service as stated on their web site is a myth, as is the vaunted highest possible standard'. Only one of the items that I asked to have fixed before collection (from a distance) were done, another broken part was replaced, by cannibalising another car, whilst I waited. The rest I will either have to do myself, or pay a local garage to do. There was no owners' manual with the car. James McCarthy said he would send one. After two unacknowledged emails I had to buy one (they are not cheap - perhaps why I was never sent one). When I was there it was pouring with rain, & I was kept waiting and my time was running out, so the paper work was rather waved in front of me than given me to look at carefully (that was my fault), but the vehicle's rather dodgy provenance and service record were not drawn to my attention (my trusting inexperience). Before I bought it I was told that it would be serviced, but there was nothing on the service sheet to say that this had been done according to Volvo's schedule, and the oil looked so thin that, by this time lacking any trust in them, I had it replaced by a Volvo dealer.
MY ADVICE > WALK, RUN, HITCH A LIFT, OR GO BY BUS, BUT NEVER GO NEAR MCCARTHY CARS.

I'm James McCarthy, as mentioned in this review. I am new to this site and I am disappointed that this customer feels that he has to write on another website than to come back to me with any issues that he may have.

Firstly, I apologise if you didn't receive a copy of the service report and the handbook that was promised. They were sent to you about 3/4 days after you picked up the vehicle. I will now ensure that another copy of the service report is sent to you and I will reimburse you £50 to cover the costs of you replacing the handbook. I will send these by special delivery tomorrow, Friday 8th October.

You mention that only one thing was done on your vehicle before collection. I have checked the sales file for your vehicle, we carried out a full service, this included changing the oil and oil filter, (we used a 10/40w semi synthetic oil), air filter and fuel filter, we fitted a new rear wiper blade and also replaced your front brake discs and brake pads. We have very high standards, we expect brakes to last a minimum of 6 months or 6000 Miles whichever sooner and we only pass tyres that are 3mm and above. We also replaced the front steering "bump" stops, a very common part to change on a Volvo.

This is far more than any other garage would do.

We also fitted Rear Parking Sensors (We use Steelmate Sensors; these are regarded as the best available). We had a brand new MOT carried out on the vehicle for you, even though the vehicle still had a current MOT.

I am not sure what you mean about other parts that I did not do for you. Please feel free to call me on my direct number, 020 8649 9111 or my mobile 07966 248 547, or you can email me at [email protected]

You say that we had to cannibalise another vehicle whilst you were waiting to pick up your vehicle. What you don't say is that the part I had to take from another was a Satellite Navigation disc, as the disc in the vehicle was for mainland Europe, which I do recall giving to you, because you spend a lot of time in France. I apologise if I had missed anything on the vehicle, like I have said before, please contact me so that I can put it right for you.

You arranged to collect the vehicle on a Sunday morning but then you changed it to 1st thing Monday morning. If I recall correctly I was alone in the sales office that morning. I don't recall if it was raining. We spent about 15 minutes going through the paperwork for the vehicle. Certainly nothing was waved under your nose, I went through each document in the sales pack, this included your New MOT, HPI and NMR Report, your spare set of keys, we even joked about this!, I showed you the service book and where we had completed the service entry. You had already seen all of this paperwork when you first visited my showroom, we spent about 1 hour going through it all.

I ensured that the yellow section of your part exchange Volvo was completed for you and showed you where to send it to and advised for you to send it recorded delivery. I gave you your New Keeper Supplement for you new Volvo.

You talk about the vehicle's rather dodgy provenance and service record. Again I don't know what you mean, It was a 4 year old, One Owner Volvo V70 D5 Estate, that had covered 46,000 Miles and Had a Volvo Service History. You were shown all of the vehicle's paperwork, both when you left your deposit and again when you picked up the vehicle.

You had nearly a week in-between if there were any issues you wished to raise.

I am sorry that you feel that you weren't well at McCarthy Cars, because that is our aim, to treat everybody well, how we would like to be treated.

What can I do to restore your faith in McCarthy Cars? Please let me know.

Best Wishes
