As A First Fly Rod And For Its Price The Spring Cr
As a first fly rod and for its price the Spring Creek seemed unbeatble costing a fraction of the price of its rivals. It was only after a period of use that its shortfalls began to show. Not with its action as the rod was a pleasure to use and was quite forgiving of any mistakes. However it is the quality of its finnish and some materials that have let it down. After only 9 months of moderate use the cork handle has begun to degrade with bits breaking off. The tip ring has lost its chrome protective covering down to the metal underneath which will create more wear on the fly line through friction. The biggest problem is of the whippings round the section joints. The cenral whipping on my rod failed resulting in an ominous crack and the rod lying at a funny angle. This is easily resolved by having the center section replaced however the rod is unusable until ths is done. A good rod for beginners and light use however as a lon term prospect I have my doubts.
Having replaced damaged section of my Spring Creek 7/8 9ft fly rod and repairing the frayed whippings the rod was ready for use again. However this use was only short lived as the upper part of the center section snapped while playing a reasonable fish of 6 lbs. I managed to land the fish however the rod was beyond repair. I certainly did not expect this and as such will not be repairing the rod and scrapping it. Definatly not a long term proposition.
I recently purchased two Spring Creek fly rods from tackle discounts, a 9ft 7/8 and 9ft 5/6. Both have an "Unconditional Lifetime Original Owner Guarantee". If your rod has gone wrong then I would refer you back to Tackle Discounts.
