“Kathryn Bigelow, for me, will always have a little bit...”

★★★☆☆

written by reviewkitten on 06/04/2010

Kathryn Bigelow, for me, will always have a little bit of love from me purely for Point Break. I had heard great things about The Hurt Locker even before it won the Oscar which surprised me slightly then and even more now I've actually seen it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film but had it not been hyped then I probably would have waited until it came out on Sky.

There are some tense moments and surprises but unfortunately these surprise twists (I won't spoil them) become more and more obvious. My favourite part is the sniper scene as it conveys the realism of the situation alongside the development of the main characters relationship. It didn't leave me in awe but was a good solid film with some interesting cameo roles, one in particular I felt was way underused and could have lifted the film up had their character featured more.

“Im sure Im not alone in watching this purely because...”

★★☆☆☆

Im sure Im not alone in watching this purely because it won some Oscars. Im a big war film fan and so was quite looking forward to it.

For me, its one of those films that's instantly fogettable. There's nothing I can pinpoint as being 'bad' about it - it's just a bit irrelevant and meanders along without any real purpose or direction.

One or two of the characters are a bit unbelievable and the plot would be of interest if it were a sub-plot, but for me anyway it didnt hold up as the main (only) plot.

So, it was "alright" but that's about it. I wasn't reaching for the remote to switch it off, but I was left thinking, "Oh, is that it?" at the end.

Maybe if it didnt have Oscar hype behind it I'd have had lower expectations and it would have been more enjoyable to watch.

If someone told me that they were about to watch The Hurt Locker tonight I wouldn't plead with them to stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone either.

I may well be in the minority with my views on this film, but for me it fell quite a way short of what I had expected, quite average at best.

“I'm not a fan of war movies, but I found The Hurt...”

★★★★★

written by METHUSALA on 16/03/2010

I'm not a fan of war movies, but I found The Hurt Locker to be thoroughly enjoyable.

It cleverly expresses the views and emotional states of soldiers serving in Iraq by focussing on a trio of bomb disposal experts, and makes it very clear that there is a very real war in Iraq, it's not a simple police action.

Gritty and believable, it's acted well throughout, and shows how war screws people up, but might also be the only place where some feel at home.

SPOILER ALERT: Quite a shock when Guy Pearce, an actor I supposed would be the hero/anti-hero of the piece is quickly dispatched in the opening sequence - a clever tool to make me realise that I didn't know what was coming next. :END SPOILER

Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List - these are all top war movies, the few I would enjoy watching again. The Hurt Locker joins this list. Quality.

I have been watching a lot of movies that focus on war but I tend to get bored. At the recently Oscar's award, I got amazed that a war movie got plenty of awards so I definitely find time to watch it, and at first it was boring but overall I enjoyed it. A typical war scenario with bombs, firing, guns, tanks all around. US soldiers who protects locals from terrorists and all. A bit emotional at the end, with a strong plot I can say. I will recommend this to my friend. Still, worth the award I guess.

“I find it really hard to begin my film review on The...”

★★★☆☆

written by erena on 10/03/2010

I find it really hard to begin my film review on The Hurt Locker. The movie was recently awarded best film from the two most prestigious film awards, the BAFTAs and the Oscars, the director Kathryn Bigelow got the two awards for best director, and this came alongside numerous other film awards.
So supposedly it is a good emotional film, with strong concept.
But it didn't impress or move me as much as I thought it would!
Set in 2004 the story follows a three men bomb disposal team from the US Army which is joined by Sergeant William James after their team leader is blown up. Their mission is to wander around the ruined streets of Baghdad and deactivate any explosives.
The plot mainly focuses on the character of William James who from the point of introducing looks fearless, determined and addicted to danger kind of personality. His fellow team members treat him with suspicion at first, they even speculate about killing him, but with the plot development they start to show respect for him and his courage.
Also as the plot develops different sides of William's character are revealed as he befriends with a local Iraqi boy, he tells about how he has left his wife and his little baby boy.
The good thing about this film is that it doesn't go the line of any political issues, it does not preach; Bigelow is not concerned about the relations of the USA with the Middle East, with this film she has tried to portrait what is in the mind of a soldier and their individual personal dramas.
I would certainly recommend it to a friend but would not really rate it as the best film.
