Murasaki Shikibu, The Tale of Genji - If new to the world of Japanese cultures and norms, this epic is a great start. Screens, clothes, incense, the significance of the seasons' changing, etc.; it's all here. It is fun to follow a young prince (Genji) through his many experiences and exploits, see the maturation of a young man into a noble lord, and hear the psychology behind a culture steeped in tradition and etiquette.
As stated, this is an epic novel; it is not for people who become bored easily and focus on the task at hand. The characters in the book often become confusing, as the phases in life and the nicknames often change for each person. You might want to start a character tree to keep up with everyone. Additionally, if you can't handle a little pre-feminist society, then this book is definitely not for you. You must remember that this was a different time and a different place.
I would recommend this book only to those I thought could handle the length and appreciate (or not judge against their own modern view) the culture and poetry that flows throughout this great novel.
