“Best Holiday of my Life!”

★★★★★

written by Subaloo on 31/05/2012

Well, what can I say..... I loved it! The location was fabulous, the Karuna Detox team were lovely and my fellow detoxers I hope are going to become friends for a long time. I learned a lot about nutrition, about why periodic fasting is good for the body to help it heal and repair itself and I learned about the 80/20 balance, and about food combining..... Raw is great for the body and soul but sometimes its hard to be completely Raw, so don't beat yourself up about it if you do enjoy a fabulous meal which isn't raw, its ok, just make your next meal raw or 80/20 and it will all be fine. The colonics were great... I know that sounds weird, but it was good to know we were shedding years of toxins so we could start anew. The walks and yoga were great too... very relaxing, and we had full use of the pool and sauna. All cottages had TVs so you could watch TV or DVD's in the evening either in your own cottage or visit others in theirs to watch together. The only downside was the psyillium husks we had to take with water.... but that was necessary and its only for a week. Our last meal (first real meal) on the last night was delicious! All raw, and now we have the recipe we can make it at home, and its so delicious I am thinking of making it for a dinner party - everyone will love it I am sure! Even if you don't want to eat Raw everyday. I must say that I had no negative detox effects so breezed through it, although some people can feel tired or headachey. The people who were there, including the Detox team, made it a fabulous holiday for me, they were amazing!.... and yes it was a holiday! It was relaxing without being boring and the weather was fabulous! The sun really shone on us. So thank you to Sho, Donna, Louise, Anne and Paul and my fellow detoxers for making my holiday so enjoyable, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make some change in their lives to become more healthy! Thank you all! Sue x

“I tried this retreat once - i would probably not...”

I tried this retreat once - i would probably not recomm to friends for the following reasons.

1. the temperature in the rooms were cold
2. no expert colonic therapist - which is key for a proper detox.
3. the juices were just not good, nor diverse.

though, the treatment (massages, etc.) were superb.

lastly, detox be it 1x a year minimum are (I believe) essential for everyone.

I agree with what you say, ive visited a few detox retreats, and feel its well worth shopping around as there are other retreats that offer much better quality for money.

I'm sorry to hear your disappointment with our program, we aim to please, and mostly do!

The heating of the rooms was an avoidable problem, sorry you didn't mention this at the time. As the heat is according to an adjustable thermostat, in each cottage and the farmhouse. As people detoxing do get colder, our cottages and farmhouse temp normally errs on the side of too warm, and people open the windows to cool down, and let in the fresh air and the sound of birdsong.

This is not a feast for the taste buds detox. That's true. And... The juices can get boring. No matter what juice diversity there is. The reason is that when the detox deepens we stop wanting to eat, and our taste buds can express this. It might be a sign (at the time) to let go of the juice altogether and go onto a water fast. Until the juices 'call' you again. Generally, carrot, apple, celery, beetroot, ginger combinations with broth in the evenings on Tue. and Wed. are enough to give people the simple natural sugars of the (diluted) juices to enjoy being active and sociable, participating in the program, and yet not interfere with the deep detox cleanse this program provides.

Finally, the colonics are advertised on the site as being self-administered, this is part of our ethos as we believe in intensive colonic irrigation combined with fasting as the way to cleanse most effectively in one week. WIth a colonic hydrotherapist administering colonics you would have 1-3 colonics p.week, instead of twice a day with us. In addition, we enjoy educating people on how to perform colonics, as it is so simple, and it provides tools for health for life. Anyone who's been on Karuna Detox Retreat can buy an enema bag or colonic board and know exactly how to reclaim their health.

But mostly, I personally care about each of my clients. And so I am sincerely sorry that you didn't enjoy your time with us, and that somehow it left you cold.

Best wishes - I hope you found the detox place that works for you,
Sho

“I have recently been on a 1 week retreat at the Karuna...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 24/06/2010

I have recently been on a 1 week retreat at the Karuna Detox Centre in Devon. I am almost 1 stone lighter and my battery is completely recharged . It was just what I had hoped for; my head is clearer, I have more energy and I feel strong enough now to make major changes to my toxic lifestyle.

The team were great, the talks very informative and the location was lovely but I have to say that my bedroom and bathroom were well below the quality I would have expected. Having said that I saw most of the other rooms and some were really lovely but there was no consistency. I didnt pay any less and I feel that a few of the rooms need a serious update particularly as you spend a fair amount of time there when detoxing!

I would recommend anyone who needs to detox and kick start to seriously consider the Karuna Detox Retreat in Devon.

Karuna Detox is a great retreat I thoroughly enjoyed it. I nearly lost a stone in weight without sagging in 7 days. It was very cleansing, healing and a life changing experience. It's in a lovely location called Ham Farm near Dolton in Devon and is far away enough from temptation to cheat. Juice fasting and colonics are such a wonderful way to achieve good health and weight loss. The team that look after you while on retreat are lovely. I will go again every year now to keep up the good work I have started. I have not only lost weight but have learnt a lot about nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Karuna is a life altering experience. Through fasting, colonics, nutritional talks, walks in the beautiful countryside, daily yoga, sauna, pool and a multitude of therapies to choose from I left a week later feeling lighter, brighter, happier and healthier than I have in a very long time. The team are supportive, encouraging, experienced and keep things light with humour, patience and above all lots of love. They are all inspired teachers and walk the talk. I will be back on a regular basis. I absolutely loved it.

What can I say? I learned so much on this detox retreat - that You get out literally what you put in. I'm very excited about my future healthier life, I'm grateful too. I'm sure I've never met such a great detox team (and the leader is very special - she leads the meditation and nutrition) they covered detox of mind-body and spirit. The Journey therapy, the Massage, the meditation and nutrition bingo - it was all very very good. I've had a great time. And the location is really beautiful too, peaceful countryside with a fab indoor pool and sauna and great accomodation. Excellent!
