This Asus L8400-b Laptop Has Been Nothing But Good
This Asus L8400-B laptop has been nothing but good to me. I purchased it with a PIII-650 and 128MB of Ram with a 12GB hard drive and 16MB video. It ran Windows XP ok but not fast enough so I upgraded the ram to 256MB and the video to 32MB. I also purchased a 40GB hard drive and now it runs almost anything I throw at it (exceptions being some of the more graphic intensive games). I would not trade it for another similar priced laptop. My back-pack DVD writer works great plugged in to the USB port.
Hello,we have recently purchased a secondhand L8400 C.How did you upgrade the RAM?We can't see how to get inside the thing except by undoing eight screws on the bottom of the case. ThanksMargaret
The Asus L8400-B is not a bad laptop, and I have noticed PC World sells this at a very low price indeed.

The Asus L8400-b Laptop I Bought Came With A Penti
The Asus L8400-B laptop I bought came with a Pentium III-500 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 12 GB hard drive, integrated modem/network card, a 6X DVD-ROM drive, 8MB video card and 16 bit sound card. A nice little unit.
I found the previous reviews to be lacking in respect to
detail.
I agree that the Asus is value for money. Good bang for buck compared to rivals which is why I bought one.
However, reviews did not cover performance areas or features properly.
I am still evaluating mine and my verdict is not in yet. I am testing with 4 OS and hardware compatibility is good, ...except the standard Realtek NIC.
Of major importance, was this laptop hardware fully compliant with windows 2000 professional and windows 2000 server.
I have had major problems with creating a working MS Client boot disk for this laptop for the realtek card. However, the same NIc is working fine with w9x, NT4, 2000 and LINUX OS. Also you can option for onboard modem instead of NIC. I would advise this instead of the realtek NIC. If you require networking, get a PCCARD NIC adapter which also supports DOS drivers.
Build quality, chasis is solid. Port replicator addon
excellent.
8x DVD fantastic. DVD which ships with the ASUS is a quality DVD drive which can be made region free.
Very handy for international peoples such as myself.
TVout feature works. I was disappointed that this out was not true SVideo but is comparable to even the top end DEll laptops.
Hard disk size. I optioned the 20 GB...just big enough.
I am pushing my laptop fairly hard so the Jury is still out on this one.
So far, I don't regret the purchase.
Choose the modem onboard If want the dos disk network boot capability.
The video display is good quality.
