Samsung FQ159ST

Had a small problem - light burned out. Oven was just under 2 yrs old. At first Samsung claimed warranty was 1 yr as it was a microwave. As on their website it was listed under OVENS and not under MICROWAVES and the manual calls it a "Speed Cook Oven", I argued that it was an oven and therefore had the 2 yr warranty for ovens. Well, a lot of emails back and forth and they finally accepted that it was an oven.

1st) Technician came to fix the burnt out bulb, had to pull oven out (bad design just to change a bulb), put in new bulb, he said was too bright, wrong bulb, would come again and bring new one. I had also said one of the supports for the inside grill rungs was loose - he removed them, tried to tighten screw and put them back in.

After that, when using the micro, the oven would shut down after 15 secs. Called and reported that. Said had been fine (except for burnt out bulb) before technician had touched it.

2nd Tech guy (weeks later). Brought same bulb as other guy. Put that in. Said one of the capacitors was burnt, causing cut out. Replaced that - did not fix problem. Said 2nd capacitor probably also burnt, but only had one, so would come again. (each time of course the oven had to be pulled out from about 5 ft up)

3rd Tech guy. Fitted another new capacitor, did not solve problem - but he noticed door was a tiny bit off. Said would replace and to fix other problem needed a new circuit board.

4th Tech Guy: Put in new circuit board. Did not fix cut out problem. Replaced glass on door - did not fix slight (almost imperceptible) problem. Said oven needed a new ventilator to fix cut out.

5th Tech guy (frankly I was starting to lose count and patience): He put in a new fan - did not fix problem. By that time the bottom moulding had broken one of its attachments given that it had been taken off and on so many times. He said he would recommend the entire oven be replaced.

6th or 7th Tech guy (as there may have been another one in there) : he replaced the entire door but did not fix cut out. He tried to call Samsung (as had the others) but did not get through and said he could not wait and left. 10 min later he buzzed my door and asked to come up. He checked the rack holders in the oven and found Techie No 1 had put them in upside down (the left one on the right and visa versa). This resulted in the rungs of the holder being too close to the top of the oven and sparking when in Micro mode, causing it to cut out.

So all this took 6 or 7 visits from their outsourced service people, plus ended up replacing a good part of my oven - I now have lots of spare parts as they just throw away what they replace. Took about 3 months to get sorted. Think it would have been cheaper to pick up and take the oven to a shop and bring it back when working.

Otherwise I like the oven a lot. Looks good. Works fine. Is the largest microwave oven short of a professional one (internal cc). Just wish one could program one's own "Speed Menu" settings - a bit limiting having them decide on 12 foods.

Noticed small stress fractures in the door handle fixing blocks after one year. Eventually left hand fixing gave way putting pressure on the toughened glass door.It shattered into a thousand pieces around my feet. Still within warranty so now to test whether Samsung will fix it at no cost to me.

“The Samsung Built In Speed Oven FQ159ST is Good...”

The Samsung Built In Speed Oven FQ159ST is Good looking and easy to clean The oven function works very well. Microwave function (most likely due to not having a turntable) is not as good as my 10 year old Sharp convection microwave, but works. Set menu options (baked potatoes, roasts, etc.) work well but require weighing of food which was not required with my Sharp. Overall a good appliance and easy to use once you figure it out. Just wish Samsung had a trained technician to solve our problem....
