We need to regulate against not just Whirlpool, but the whole white goods industry. We spend at least £200 on these things (£312 in this case), and it should not be pot luck between one that lasts for just beyond the warranty and one that lasts over 10 years.

How can a fridge be classified as A rated if it is not guaranteed to last long enough for the cost of producing it to be outweighted by the savings in running costs.

Our specific problems:

- The badly fitting shelves, and their trims. They have never really worked properly. Bottom shelf forever falling into the drawers.

- The far too weak drinks shelf with room for 4 bottles of wine or juice which can't take that weight and has split at the front

- The motor. It's been noising for quite a while and the last few days has become such that I now need to replace it - I think.

Write you your MP and ask for a 5 year minimum guarantee - not rip off extended warranty schemes.

We have had numerous service visits for our Whirlpool fridge freezer. The procedure is that

1. A "service engineer" is called, and chooses a part to be replaced.

2. We wait 10-15 days for its delivery from Italy.

3. The part is replaced, but it soon breaks down again.

Back to square 1.

Actually we have had the whole fridge replaced once. The replacement lasted 21 days.

Finally a real refrigerator engineer arrived from another company, checked the circuits and identified the parts we actually needed.

One of these is a circuit board that has failed before in our fridge. The engineers don't carry a spare, and Whirlpool apparently do not keep it in stock in the U.K.

This engineer provided helpful advice which meant that we know what to do when it frosts up.

But to repair it we need the parts from Whirlpool. We are still waiting.
