We went to Malik's with quite high expectations as we'd seen it in the top 10 curry house list in the Times. Having recently visited another curry house on the list, we thought the standard would be similar. The food was good (but I wouldn't say excellent in my opinion) but I felt the service we experienced was really poor.
When the waiters served our food, it felt like it was just slopped down on the table and made me feel as if we were in the way and a nuisance. In my opinion they also didn't seem to really know that much about what they were serving. Admittedly, the restaurant was busy (always a sign of a good restaurant), but I think the service we received should have been better.
At the end of our meal, we asked for the bill and were given a piece of paper with scribble on that was really hard for me to read the detail. On top of that, they seemed to have added a service charge to the bill but I couldn't read what the amount was for and when I asked, I was told it was the tip.
We left without paying the tip. I'm happy to pay a tip for average or very good service, but I felt this place didn't warrant it. We paid £52 for 2 Popadoms, 2 starters, 2 mains (chicken bhuna and monkfish masala), with garlic naan (which was v good!), pilau rice, 1 beer and 1 glass of wine.
I'd get take-away from there but to be honest, I feel there are other curry houses in the area that I would like to try before going back....
