I Did The Dreaded Thing About Two Years Ago By Cut

I did the dreaded thing about two years ago by cutting through the cable. The provided 13-amp 'protection' failed and left a potentially lethal situation. I took up the matter with Qualcast who fobbed me off about their choice of a 13-amp fuse within the plug. Because the device has a 380-watt consumption, my basic knowledge of matters electrical induced me to replace Qualcast's 13-amp fuse with a 3-amp fuse and all went well. A few days ago I was careless enough to sever the cable again, but this time with no potentially disastrous results because the 3-amp fuse did its job, thereby isolating the mains supply and all mortals present from imminent danger. What are these stupid buggers playing at? A hedgetrimmer at best is a dangerous appliance and providing the incorrect fuse rating makes it ten times so.

Only a RCD cut off device would protect you more than a 3 or 13 amp fuse in such a device. A 3 amp fuse would offer no more protection from shocks than a 13 amp one. Both are likely to blow easily when you cut the cable but offer no shock protection if they don't blow. In addition all devices with electric motors require an initial higher start up current as the motor runs up to fell speed so a 3 amp fuse is likely to fail without any faults in the machine. Perhaps a little more knowledge is needed before you criticise a responsible company. I teach Physics.

....having cut through the cable twice in quick succession I would suggest it isn't Qualcast who are- as you state- "stupid buggers"Maybe a pair of scissors would be more appropriate for you.
