I find the customer service in Inverness incredibly slow:( The accounts department are needing some assistance where allocating payments are concerned. One account manager per customer would be a good idea!!

“Brilliant staff, shame about "manager"”

★★★☆☆

written by on 23/05/2017

Recently visited the rugby branch for some doors. The person I spoke to was very polite and gave me a brochure talked to me about the doors I liked and explained about being a trade only company so would have to go through my fitter for prices, this was not an issue. She was extremely helpful and got the chaps to get the doors out for me to look at. I popped back in on the Saturday with my wife to show her and we ended up speaking to the manager. Well what a complete difference our experience was this time. He was rude and arragont didn't seem bothered as we were not tradesmen. Very cocky. In fact he walked off halfway through and got another staff member to "deal with us" due to his complete disregard and lack of professionalism we bought our doors elsewhere and will be buying our kitchen elsewhere too. Such a shame as he has let down the other friendly members of staff there.

“Could Be Better”

★★★☆☆

written by on 13/05/2017

The 'designer' talked in joinery jargon I didn't understand. It is usually women deciding on kitchens and I don't think they want all this 600ml by 300ml stuff. I didn't know what the hell he was on about and was very confused. If a relative who is a joiner had not met up with the 'designer' at my home, I would not have gone ahead as I didn't understand all the joiner speak. It took several goes to get the design I wanted as there seemed to be a communication problem. I think the joinery jargon needs to be dropped and a more 'designer' approach taken. I wouldn't have bought my kitchen units from Howdens if my relative had not been around to explain what the guy was meaning. However, the units and work tops are lovely and the kitchen looks great. I am pleased with the kitchen but the approach taken when visiting me to discuss the design could have been much better. The guy is pleasant enough but needs to drop the jargon and try not to confuse people by bamboozling them with so many options you don't know where you are.

“Quick kitchen”

★★★☆☆

written by Aberbrothock on 11/05/2017

I thought the kitchen we bought was to an average standard. I have compared this to our previous kitchen that was much better constructed. Positives include the kitchen being pre built, delivered quickly and everything being in stock. I did think, however, that the kitchen designer made decisions without consulting us and by the time we realised it was too late. She also appeared frustrated when we changed our mind albeit we did this only a few times. If you want a kitchen in a hurry and are happy with a basic kitchen then this is a good choice. The appliances and sink were also very basic. What would have been good before we made our choice was a discussion with the kitchen designer talking through all elements in detail and her being more patient.

“dissapointed”

★★★☆☆

written by on 11/12/2015

I have just seen an advert for Howdens that prompted me to write this. The advert stated that the designers gave support to the customers and builder throughout We have a very expensive kitchen. We met the so called designer at the start. He was there 20 mins. He spoke to our builder and a lot of what we said was confirmed through the builder. We felt like our opinion was not listened too. Confirmed when the wrong doors arrived. When we had the wrong larder unit. Now we are left with doors that can not be opened. Not happy at all. We never saw him again. Or heard from him. He got a good commission for 20 mins I would say

Sorry to read you are not happy. I have been considering using this kitchen company, but I am a bit confused with your review???
A kitchen designer came to see you at the start, he didn't speak to you, but spoke to your builder. Your opinion was not listened to, and what you said was confirmed through your builder?? Why wouldn't he speak or listen to you? I am not surprised you never saw or heard from him again!
I really cannot understand following this experience of being totally ignored, what made you buy a 'very expensive kitchen' from this company???
Maybe I have misunderstood your review.
I really like the look of the kitchen cabinets in this shop.

“poor quality extractor fan”

★★★☆☆

written by npSinclair373 on 10/11/2015

Quality of cupboards looks good in catalogue but disappointed when installed. The extractor fan thrown in is a low quality with a 'd' energy rating. Howdens advertised sale but give you discount instead which you cannot see as you pay through a tradesman

“Dissatisied”

★★★☆☆

written by on 26/10/2015

I had my Howden's kitchen installed 5 years ago next month (November). I remember being so excited when it was finished, it looked amazing, still does. I opted for the Lamona products on good authority. Unfortunately, within the first year things started to go wrong - the ignition was the first to go within a few months, within 18 months I had to contact the joiners who fit it because the cooker hood broke - the arms began to deteriorate due to the heat generating from the hob which they kindly replaced. Within 2 years the element in the oven needed replacing and has been replaced again since. A couple of month later the fan went and had to be replaced. By the end of the third year the motor went on the freezer, so I have had a new inter-grated freezer installed. The final straw was today when the cooker hood fell out altogether, crash, bang, wallop right in the middle of cooking tea taking a hot pan of oil with it. One of the arms had snapped due to the heat. I was very, very lucky I didn't end up with three degree burns. Apart from the cooker hood Howdens didn't replace any of the mentioned appliances. Because my warranty has expired I'm not sure where I stand with this one?. My kitchen still looks stunning, but the Lamona electric appliances are total rubbish. My washing machine I bought from a department store 6 years is still going strong in comparison.

“howdens of selby”

★★★☆☆

written by Perezmq335 on 30/06/2015

They are expensive. The young lady in charge of out kitchen took the measurements but we were sent cabinets that the fitters fitted that left a 10cm gap at the end so a decor end had to be cut and fitted, this is not what was wanted and as a consequence causued a dummy cabinet to be fitted that was not semetrical spoiling the look. They lied about a few things and the kitchen was more than the estimate given by @ £600. I partner is very unhappy and is always bringing it up so I am having to suffer as well. I would advice that you take the measurements as well as them and check their plans and make sure you watch the fitters carefully and that the kitchen is fitted correctly. Check everything all the time.

“Kitchen installed by a master joiner”

★★★☆☆

written by MoRyan on 13/05/2015

I had a kitchen and appliancies from Howdens 2012 The first thing to go wrong was a microwave Howdens sent out a representive from their company twice and on the third occassion I was told SORRY OUT OF WARANTY (2013) microwave in skip. Cooker Hood the clips on the filter cover broke so contacted Howdens again and again and even had a representive come from Howdens still no luck so my husband an engineer has fitted magnics because Howdens on numerous occassions said they would send the parts. (2013 - 2014. Now have noticed that the chrome on the taps we bought from Howdens is starting to come off. The fridge Freezer is not that good either. SO I am very very greatful for my Joiner who fitted the kitchen because the cupboards are fine. Also the cooker also supplied by Howdens is cheap. I guess you get what you pay for. CHEAP NOT.

“Burford wall cabinets- design fault?”

★★★☆☆

written by on 13/12/2014

Overall we are pleased with our replacement kitchen. The Burford cream units with rounded corner cabinets, together with granite worktops from another local company, look very good so far However, we haven't been pleased with the under-cabinet lighting. The lighting looks okay when you are standing up (viewed from a higher level) but when seated at the table the light units are very bright and glaring, and the wires and fittings are visible. They look very unsightly and almost blinded us when sitting down for a meal- not a relaxing ambience! I believe this to be a design fault, as the front 'lip/overhang' of the wall cabinets is very shallow, barely covering the light fittings. Our previous Magnet kitchen, which we had had for 24 years, did not have this problem as the light fittings were well-concealed by a deeper overhang, and the lighting effect was much better- no glare or unsightly fittings. I emailed Howdens several weeks ago to explain the problem and also to ask if they had lower wattage lights (these were Interlink 344mm 8w) but to date have not had the courtesy of a reply. This reflects the experience of others- once they have your money they are not interested in any follow-up or after-sales service. In the end we got our electrician out and he re-positioned the lights. They now look better than they did but you can still see part of the fittings when seated, and they are still too glaring. If the cupboard overhang depth/recess were to be increased by just a few centimetres, this would improve things no end. Howdens would do well to emulate more upmarket kitchen companies and improve their after-sales service - perhaps by a customer-satisfaction survey and a policy to ensure follow-up queries are responded to. Otherwise how will they ever improve their product?

Todge69's Comment

Written on: 02/01/2015

Surely when you visited there showroom or picked out your kitchen in the catalogue you could see the cornice or lip/overhanging as you call it.
You cant go pick something then complain its not what you expected if you have already seen it.

“wrong colour splash backs”

★★★☆☆

written by McKee208 on 16/10/2014

Went to Howdens as brother said they are very good. Liked range and had meeting with kitchen designer who measured and planned everything for us. I asked what notice they required to ensure everything ready for fitter; told 1 week to guarantee everything. I gave them 2.5 weeks and fitter still ended up driving several times to Corby for missing bits (still waiting for 4 handles). We went away while kitchen was being fitted, came back to find instead of the olive green splash backs they sent pale blue. Fitter has done great job but this isn't the kitchen I ordered. I have contacted Howdens but still waiting. I also have several square meters of the flooring in my garage. Reading the reviews it is obvious that which branch you use is very important as customer service seems to vary.

“Afterwards they suck”

★★★☆☆

written by Cassidyd59 on 03/10/2014

No complaints about the Oak kitchen we had fitted but the stainless steel splash back for the cooker is staining with what looks like rust. Howdens didn't want to know as it was over 2 years since purchase, not happy at all as it means dismantling the cooker hood to replace. The staff at the Minworth branch were less than helpful.

“Avoid Lamona (Howden's own brand) and laminate floors”

★★★☆☆

written by on 26/09/2014

Our builder recommended Howdens - he liked the saleswoman and had used them before. Her initial design was limited - unnecessarily cramped and she hadn't always listened to what we'd said. The builder improved it, the fitter (not from Howdens) adapted things and we went ahead. Having read earlier reviews about Lamona (their own brand) appliances, we bought other brands for everything except the tap (spray, mixer, hose type). This seemed good, but needs re-tightening every few months as it works loose and swivels round (the plumber says something is too short to fit properly) and they use metal that rusts in an internal part, as if they didn't think the inside of a tap would get wet. So we're going to replace it from somewhere else. The cupboards are generally good - the doors are solid wood, so were more expensive than some. Strangely, one side piece for our island unit (not solid wood, but coated board) arrived with edging strip missing from one edge. After waiting hopefully for it to be sorted, my husband went to Howdens to get a roll of edging strip to fit himself. The Howdens man tried saying that these pieces always came with both edges finished properly and then wanted money for the roll (he didn't get it!). We've used their laminate flooring in the dining part of the kitchen/diner and in the living room, and my advice is ... don't. We went for a mid-price range, it was fitted by a joiner and we've tried to be careful, but very soon it had scratches and some edges were chipped. I'd thought that perhaps some of our problems were because our fitter, plumber and so on weren't from Howdens but, having read other people's reviews, perhaps not.

To be fair many of these reviews are fitter related issues, and for the volumes of kitchens they sell this a very small amount of people complaining...just remember howdens stock all there kitchens, if you have any problems, be it changing the odd unit, a damaged item, this can be changed within days..this company would not be as so massive in 17 years if it was totally rubbish. Your kitchen fitter has a reputation to up hold, any problems speak to your designer, the staff are normally really helpful.

In my view the units are fine and come preassembled. The worktops are pretty average and Lamona aplliances are extremely poor quality and spares which you will inevitably need after a year after a year or so are expensive eg £50 for a pair of fridge door hinges! My advice would be take the units but source everything else, taps, hobs fridges etc elsewhere.

Don't buy from Howdens, we had a kitchen from them. The service was awful, parts were missing, they overcharged us and then 6 months down the line when we had an issued with the upstand behind sink the comment back was "this is a common problem and the replacement is £" the salesman didn't mention this when we ordered it and I can't afford to constantly replace something every 6 months. Wish I'd never used them.

“Cannot get parts unless you have a trade account. ”

★★★☆☆

written by Worksopian on 14/10/2013

Rather disappointed with Howdens at the moment. Apologies in advance for having to put this on this site, but it is impossible to find a company email address to send complaints and problems to - and I don't want to 'contact my local branch;' because it's them I'm complaining about. Was very keen on a Howdens kitchen in my new extension, as the company were recommended by my builder. Spent a touch over £7,000 in total and it all fitted perfectly and looks great. So, what's the problem? Simple - My joiner needed one extra end panel to finish the job, and my builder (who had finished the job and was on holiday in Spain) said to visit my local Howdens and put it on his account. Easy? Not a bit. Totally refused to do this at the counter, even though my builder had given me his codes and whatnot. Offered to pay with cash - refused. Offered to pay with a card - refused. Offered to open a trade account - refused. I explained that we had spent £7,000 and just wanted a £40 panel to finish the job. Response - 'If your builder isn't bright enough to order the right amount of gear to start with that's your problem, not mine. This is a trade only shop so there's nothing I can do.' Fortunately, another builder who was waiting in the shop also thought it was shabby treatment of a good customer and he bought it on his account for me and I paid him in cash. I'm starting an addition to the extension next month, and I'm going to enlarge the kitchen, so I will be needing another 4 or 5 units - so, how am I supposed to get them if I'm not even allowed to buy a single end panel? I'm sure Howdens is great for the builder - but I think that maybe a little more thought on how to help a customer after the builder has gone off the site might be an idea.

“Howdens appliances; Rubbish!!”

★★★☆☆

written by fatmog on 22/05/2013

Had a Howdens kitchen fitted by a local builder approx three yrs ago-the quality and installation was great but there has been loads of problems with the appliances-control knobs continually melting on grill/oven, intermittent fan fault in oven; hob control knobs melting, a faulty integrated microwave oven that had been wired up wrongly on at the factory[no product recall despite being thrown across the kitchen a couple of times when attempting to operate it]and the extractor fan blowing up when it was just out of garantee but it had only been used occasionally- I sent my grievances about two months ago via my builder to their Head office and still waiting for a reply

“I would buy another Howdens' kitchen”

★★★☆☆

written by on 01/04/2013

I have a Howdens' kitchen which was fitted about five years' ago. It still looks as good as when it was first installed. I can't speak for installation problems as mine was done by my interior designer's team. However, NEVER buy 'own brand' appliances from any of these kitchen companies be it Howdens/B&Q/Wickes etc unless you know who manufactured the equipment. If it is one of recognised companies, spare parts and repairs will present no problems.

I had my kitchen revamped by More Than Kitchens of Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire. Less than one year later the work top started to "blister" where there was a join. Contacted them and they said it was "water damage" and my fault. This had happened to them only once previously and got the work top manufacturer out who said (of course) that it was water damage and not the workmanship.
Have to disagree - how/why was there water damage if it was sealed correctly.
More Than Kitchen werent helpful in fact quite nasty to deal with.

“Kitchen Fitters”

★★★☆☆

written by on 26/03/2013

Howden kitchens are only as good as the fitters who fit them. Howdens do not have their own fitters so it is pot luck as to the end result. I have been unfortunate with my fitter so am not particularly happy with the end result.

Go talk to the manager of that particular outlet. As every branch as such is its own store, they as such compete with all the other branches for trade, so to get started its best to see the branch manager and expalin what your problems are, evidence by paperwork or photos if required. Certainly whenever I have had an issue, they have jumped to sort it out and I have no long term issues with Howdens at a local level. Damaged goods arrived on site once, they had them switched round the same day and it wasnt local. Cannot fault Portslade so go talk.

hi if you pull the drawer fully out, put your hands on both sides of the drawer box. underneath there is a small catch on the runners pull it backwards and then lift the drawer upwards, to put it back in just do this operation backwards. hope this helps.

I don't have soft close doors from Howdens in my utility room but do have soft close doors in my main kitchen. I have removed these drawers many times using the method described by 'smallworks' so I guess these catches are universal. It is easy to do, once removed they can be put back by clipping on to the runners. If in doubt I suggest you pop into Howdens and ask for a demonstration.

I have a dishwasher and do not use the drainer for dishes etc just the odd plastic container. This is supposed to be a top of the range sink, you cannot feel any scratches it almost looks as though they are appearing under the surface - could this be a manufacturing fault? Having problems with Howdens accepting the problem. Any ideas anyone?

I had so many problems getting Howdens accepting the problems. Its made worse because unbeknown to the customer, you pay the fitter Howdens money for the appliances therefore you are at the mercy of the fitter.Trading Standards are very good. Contact them. They will advise you of what to put in writing to Howdens. Please stand you ground and don't be worn down by them. I told them I would stand outside and tell all customers the problem I was having.

Kitchens are dubious quality, you may be lucky but if anything does go wrong, they do not honour their guarantee. In my opinion there are better kitchens out there with better more visible pricing and with better reputations for cuatomer care!

I bought my kitchen through Howdens. I can't say anything bad about the product. I had several complaints about the final design. Howdens have told me it's nothing to do with them that I need to take things up with the tradesman as my contract is with him. My argument is that I paid them directly. I am now taking the matter further. Do not buy Lamona products as they are made by Beko. You can insist that they tell you the prices. If I had known this myself I would have changed very expensive items to save money. If I were you I would try Wrens.

I used the company and their recommended fitter in July 2015. They are a good company from planning to completion. I had a couple of faulty pieces which they replaced the same day and they refunded some items that were not used. I have a nice looking, well fitted and a quality kitchen.

Why would anybody buy a kitchen without seeing a price list for the products they are buying, If your fitters go through them they will get an invoice for your kitchen, whether the fitters pass their discount on to you is another matter, there is nothing stopping you from opening an account with Howdens, computer and printer can do any letterhead, However there are far better independent suppliers who will give you a better deal, better quality kitchen and an invoice. Buy your appliances online, and review the product before you buy. I see the one below suggests wrens, I suggest morayfittedkitchens in elgin.

Howdens do NOT supply fitters. Branches may suggest fitters but they are two diffeent things. You get a choice of fitter at Howdens unlike other retial sheds who select the tradesmen team for you, and still your two contracts are supplier and fitter. Howdens are trade only and few would manage to get a kitchen from them direct unless thay can show they are in the trade. Generally you find your own tradeeman team, they get the kitchen planner to you, you see the plan, fitters get the pricing, then thye give you an all in figure. As such the contract of work as a retail customer is through the fitter and not Howdens itself because the customer if not having a direct account is buying through the fitter. Some branches may suggest fitters, some may have a rack of cards but none of that is any guarantee, get unbiased advice, ask a friend first for reccomendations. QUOTE: We understand that your local builder is best placed to give you the convenience and experience of a professional installation, that’s why we only sell to trade. If you don’t have a trade professional in mind, then contact your local depot who will help you find one or visit our find a local builder page for more information. BTW The retail price structure is I would say artificially high, so ignore that, its not comparable to the retail sheds, also account holders get slightly different prices from each other too.

Has anyone had a problem with the Howdens 20mm granite kitchen worktop? My daughter has had 2 break whilst being fitted by what has turned out to be a poor fitter, not Howdens but 20mm for granite seems to be too small.

Thanks for answering this question.

20mm is no uncommon due to the weight, is the bit that keeps breaking large, perhaps it is breaking because there isnt adequate support, could just be poor quality of stone, as howdens don,t install the kitchens you cant really blame them, are they supplying the granite? I wasn,t aware they were unless it is m -stone which should not break?

Hi - we have had dreadful problems with the poor quality of our actual howdowns kitchen but we had the granite workshop fitted by the supplier and that has been really good . I think the best way to go with granite work tops is supply and fit because then it is the responsibility of the supplier to make sure it is fitted correctly. - would never buy another how dens kitchen though.

Howdens have started supplying 20mm granite and have provided cutting tools to a few fitters as an incentive for them to recommend the granite to customers. They also provide a short training session to the fitters who they give the tools to.

I fitted a Gloss Cream Integrated Handle kitchen 6 months ago. Marks started to appear on a few doors and drawer fronts that we now think may be a result of splashed hot food, which is taking the surface off. Local Howdens are unhelpful and consider this normal wear and tear but the finish is not durable in a working kitchen environment. Any recommendations to restore the PET Gloss finish?

Have you contacted the depot to ask them to send a rep out to look it over? That's the normal procedure and that should have been done by the depot you bought the kitchen from. Once a rep or manager comes out, they can then send their finding to Howdens QA and resolve the issue.

We have purchased some veneered panel oak interior doors. We need to treat them and would like to retain the original colour or make it slightly darker. What would you recommend we use?

I'd recommend the Sadolin Internal Varnish "Clear Satin" for that kind of finish.

Our worktops have been in for over a year now with no problems but there was a fault in the design which wasn't spotted by the kitchen fitter until he had cut and fitted the worktop. Howdens refused to change it as they said the fitter should have noticed the fault before he cut it. So beware - we live with the fault by strategically placing things on the worktop. But it's still there! We didn't like the quality of the doors at Howdens. Most had to be swapped as they were warped. I would go elsewhere, try an independent shop, there's. to much difference in price and the quality will last. You will spend a lot of time regretting choosing howdens.

Yes I did, all around the sink area, their response was unhelpful. I am now (less than a year later) changing my worktops (obviously not using Howdens)

Not a fan of Holdens at all, the laminate comes away too easily and yes it does chip, try getting something put right as well. They hide behind being , here at least only dealing with the trade, so they will only talk to the builder who they supplied the units. You only get what you pay for in this life, I wouldn't touch them with a bar pole.

I am planning a large kitchen extension and my builder has recommended Howdens for my kitchen. My old kitchen is a German kitchen which I have had for nearly 10 years and have never had to do any thing to it. I still want a German kitchen again and have already got a quote from Kutchens which is a German kitchen company, but my builder insists I go to Howdens. What should I do?

GET ANOTHER BUILDER! (Is this even a serious question?) You do realise that builders make money off you by using Howdens? Howdens is also known for bad quality and bad customer service and not to mention being a rip off...You are better off going to IKEA who supply all their kitchens with a 25 year guarantee.
Report this content graemelees Written on: 04/07/2014
First of all you should discuss your kitchen with someone who does it for a living, Kitchen installer or supplier. I have been doing both for the last 20 years. I have installed for them all. Wickes, Tesco,s Magnet, b&q etc. I would not buy an Ikea kitchen as the person below suggest, the base cupboards have NO VOIDS in the back for pipework, cables etc, and if your walls are slightly out they are extremely time consuming to install. In response to your question, No matter where you buy your kitchen, your carcase should be Egger board, this is high quality moisture resistant boarding. Doors, if you are going for wood, check the door quality before you purchase. If you are going for a foil finish then it doesn,t make a lot of difference as they are all the same standard. I supply colour co-ordinated carcase to match the door, in either wood or Foil, if you can use a tape measure we can supply anywhere in the uk, as well as recommend an experienced installer. Hope that helps

Remember that Howdens only supply the trade, so your builder will be buying from them and selling it to you. This is fine if you are happy with the quality of the kitchen ~ go to a local Howdens and see the kitchen for yourself . The downside is that if you need any spares, or you decide to enlarge the kitchen you will not be able to buy anything directly from Howdens yourself. You will have to find a builder to get it for you. They are firmly " trade only" right down to individual door handles and hinges! That said - I would always buy the kitchen YOU want, never mind what any builder tries to sell you.

Hi Bodiat, We have a Howden's kitchen and I would advise you to avoid them. One significant issue you face with Howden's is that you will not be their customer, your builder will. A problem? It certainly is when you aren't happy with the products. We had several product (not installation) issues and when I finally got in touch with Howden's head office, something of feat in itself as there is no customer service line, you aren't 'their' customer remember, they said "talk to your builder". Repeatedly. This was from the shop floor to the MD. So customer service is shocking and actually rude. Two years in and the pistons that soft close the doors are giving up too. Also Howden's are joiners and so the kitchen surface range is tiny, beyond wood that is, limiting your choice. All said and done, they are a pile it high, sell it cheap with a nice margin for your builder operator. Last thing, try their planning service and then compare it to say, Wren's. Howden's even scale that back to a basic planning service with zero flair by a software operator and clearly not someone hired for their artistic merit - they can probably drive a forklift though. Avoid. As Maddymddymaddy says, the builder gains from the margin they get, but will you?

Don't go to howdens - rubbish. They blamed the fitter every time. Your builder is probably getting the good at a low price then charging you extra. Go elsewhere!!!

Do not buy a howdens kitchen - you will rue the day you listened to that builder!! Same thing happened to us and we have now got a poor quality howdens kitchen instead of the Neptune kitchen we really wanted!!

Have you asked Howdens? I don't know their range of kitchens. Do you still have the receipt from when you bought it?

Google "Tenby" kitchen, there is still ex discon stock floating around. If it's a square cornice/pelmet, try the Burford Ivory cornice/pelmet from Howdens, that might work.
