“The Microsoft Xbox was just a mistake. They shouldn't...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McShi39 on 29/04/2005

The Microsoft Xbox was just a mistake. They shouldn't have made it. There aren't very many good games for this. Practically none of their games are exculsive to the Microsoft, besides for the Halo Games. Those weren't that good anyway. You get bored of them so easily. Every X-Box I have ever had broke down real quick. Overall, this system is the worst. I say that they should get rid of the whole system all together. Bye Bye X-box is what should happen.

A few comments on this review:

Many titles from PS2 transcend to Xbox. They’re improved, containing extra levels, better graphics and more features. This is what so many PS2 gamers are bitter about. In a sense, they’re exclusives within their own right. Add the ability to download extra content via Live; you’ve got pretty innovative, unique games. "They should have never of made it”? Apart from there being other competitors who blatantly gambled investor’s money like idiots - (that`s a certain company making cartridge based software): 1.5 million units were sold in the states, alone, last quarter (Not even going into the software sales cause I suspect it’s not worth it). Business was quite sluggish at first but now, many former PS2 owners have upgraded. Xbox is actually very durable with a higher exchange/refund/repair rate on the leading competitors part; Sony. To be fair though, Sony shifted more units. There were a percentage of Xboxes recently recalled which had `fire hazard` faulty power systems. Not many customers turned down new Xbox’s or opted for exchange. Either way, with an estimated 300 decent titles available for Xbox, who needs “exclusives” anyway? What difference does it make?

There is much more to Xbox than Halo.

Nah look, I'm sure Halo was released and developed for PC first, in fact wasn’t it originally intended to be some team strategy game on pc, not fps? Again, you've mentioned the lack of exclusive titles that 'are any good' but I totally disagree. I've been stocking up on the second hand market, buying games for next to nothing & I've got to say I'm pleasantly surprised at the colossal amount of exclusives for Xbox - I haven’t even been intentionally looking for them. Look hard enough, you will find in excess of 300 (more than enough for the average gamer). I agree with what you've said about Sony, blue ray technology wont go down in price either because it’s too expensive to manufacture. The 360 looks set to conquer the market and the original Xbox will long be popular on the retro / modding market just as the dreamcast still has die hard fans.

First, Microsoft being better than Sony is an opinion. Just like the Xbox being rated low by McShi. Everyone is allowed an opinion. Second, I am not a Sony fanboy, my favorite company is Nintendo. Thirdly, there are MANY good and popular (and exclusive) titles on the PS2. For example: Jak & Daxter's, Ratchet & Clank's, God of War, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai's, and Ace Combat's. And Final Fantasy, which you mentioned. And by the way, Doom and Half-Life ARE NOT Xbox original games, they are ports from PC games. The only true original game Xbox has is Halo. Which is the main reason the Xbox hasn't pulled a DreamCast yet.

However, I do think the Xbox 360 might be better than the PS3, and here's why: the price. The cheapest PS3 you can buy is going to start at 500 USD. And in order to get the wireless Internet Sony was bragging about you need to buy the 600 USD PS3 package. And on top of that, the Microsoft Website (according to my friend) said the 360 will drop in price around the launch of the PS3. All Microsoft needs to do is release more hot games and they will be set. I think Sony is in for a bumpy ride if Microsoft plays their cards right.

Well why don't they put high end graphics games like HALF LIFE 2 or DOOM3 on the PS2 or Nintendo Gamecube and what special games has the PS2 got? Well there's the final fantasy series and that's it - The PS2 is also made by Sony and the Xbox by Microsoft and Microsoft is much, much better.

I think this review’s almost as bad as mine. In particular, the “bye, bye Xbox is what should happen” made me really chuckle. It’s naive yet at the same time cool. You guys (not so much on this thread) are starting to quote stuff out of official psx monthly now. It’s getting desperate when you have to resort to picking on game bugs, isn’t it? Look at yourselves now.. You sound like those shuffle boys you see in the gameshop. It’s kinda nerdy, wreaks idolization of global dominated commercialism. You know the one’s I mean -

XBOX remakes are not improved versions of PS2 games. They are just poor immitations that add glitches that are VERY present in almost every game you see. Halo 2, one of XBOX's only 2 claims to fame, has sooooooo many! In a cut scene of one player, occasionally you can see the system build the characters right in front of you. It starts with a frame, then adds colors, then details. Maybe it was only on this one BOX, but that's a glitch. XBOX is not VASTLY superior to the GCN. Granted, is has a hard drive and better graphics overall, but the best graphics I've ever seen are in Resident Evil 4 - an exclusive GCN title. In addition, MOST GCN graphics are close to XBOX quality, you just subtract flaws. The GCN is also fifty USD cheaper than the BOX, and there isn't a $50 difference in the value of these graphics.

I can get all those games on a PS2 or PC!!! My exact point. Most good games you can get on Xbox, are on other system(s). To my point: You still have given me no reason to buy an Xbox!

Weird how many times the "there aren't any good games for xbox" comment appears or the question of exclusives. Don`t folks open their eyes when they enter a games shop? It`s kinda nit-picky. Plenty of great PSX 2 ports available, improved, for Xbox. What about the whole Tom Clancy series & all the strat third person shooters available? If you`re just taking fps - It`s difficult to rival Halo but there are plenty of good ones :-
(Past & Present): Wolkfenstein, M.o.h - Frontline, Starwars Republic Commando, Area 51, Doom 3, Time splitters FP, The Unreal Championship Series Games. What do people want? Blood? As far as exclusives go - they`re mostly used to launch a console or compete with rival releases, differing it from the competitors. It doesn't determine a consoles status on the market or it`s cred. The important thing is to have a range of good titles available which are value for money. If you don't like any of these games, why even own a console? If you don`t think there`s any point buying Xbox over rival companies despite it`s subtle game improvements & tech specs, that`s a choice you`re entitled to.

If you can get the same title and almost the same game on a PS2 or GC there is no point in having an Xbox. I don't care how "great" the system itself is! And it misses out on great titles such as Devil May Cry, Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Ace Combat, Rogue Squadron, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Pokemon, God of War, Metroid, and many others...exclusives on the PS2 or GC. And what does Xbox have to make me "want" to buy it? Halo. That is it. You may say the Xbox has downloadable features, but what good is that when you have almost no good games to go with it?

written by DBZgamer on 07/04/2005

The games on the Microsoft Xbox suck. An Xbox is just a mix between a computer and PS2. I could take my PS2 lay it flat put an Xbox over it and I could say I have an Xbox. I could take my computer put a Xbox sign on it and say I have an Xbox. I have a friend who was playing his Xbox and it blew up on him after 1 hour of play. Sure the explosion must have been cool but is it worth 150-200 dollars? Come on what are the differences between a PS2 and XBOX. PS2 came first so Xbox must have copied. That is all I have to say about the hunk of junk I bought for $150.

First off, I would like you to know that I am an Xbox hater myself. And to be fair, the Xbox isn't THAT bad. The graphics are very good, and there are a couple good games for it. And all game systems are, in a sense, a computer...because they all have the same components that make up a computer. I like the fact that you gave it a bad score, but a 0/10? I think it should at least get a 4/10...but that's just me. One thing I do agree with is that the Xbox really isn't worth the money you pay for it.

Ha Ha! I dont think there's much more to say - I'm admittedly not that impressed by the 360, I had a go on Call of Duty 2 and Kameo: Elements of Power recently and wasnt really blown away. To be fair, the last time I was blown away was when I first played Sega Rally 2 on a Jap Dreamcast about a year before the European release!

Anyhow, getting back the the 360, I noticed loads of graphical glitches on Call of Duty (especially when zoomed in, looking at stuff far away through the gun's sight) and while Kameo was very hi-res, it just didnt have the same 'wow' factor as when I first saw, say, Banjo Kazooie running on an N64. I'll reserve full judgement untill I've been able to get to grips with Perfect Dark Zero (I loved the original that much I personally informed Rare how great I though it was and sent them a copy of a review, and they wrote to me, saying that they hope I 'continue to be a fan of our (their) games in the future.' Well, now's the future...!

To add to Takahiro's handheld statement, as of October 1st, The PSP has sold just over 2 million units worldwide. Whereas the Nintendo DS has sold over 6.5 million! More than tripling the PSP sales. I think it is NDS wiping the floor with PSP, Tom.

Tomleecee... yes my review was pointless but basically I wanted to speak my mind about the XBox... and nobody at all has expressed any Nintendo fanboyism at all here.
I personally never spoke out in favour of any console and SamasAran spoke in favour of both PS2 and GC.
It is you creating the fanboyism here, Nintendo has a very strong line up soon, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars, The Legend of Zelda! And the DS itself also has a strong line up with Mario Kart, the recent Nintendogs, Electroplankon and many more.
And if you weren't such a Sony fanboy you would notice that the DS is actually selling more than the PSP worldwide... and speaking of which have you checked the PSP lineup? After GTA what is there? Some more ports and endless EA sports games, yeah great...

I am sorry gentlemen, but I have to agree with Takahiro. Maybe not a 0/10, but it isn't much better than that. maybe a 2-3/10. Yes, the graphics are awesome, and Xbox Live is cool, but what good are either of those when 90% of the games suck? On top of that, most games on the Xbox you can also buy for PC and/or PS2. And one more thing, the PS3 and Nintendo Revolution are going to blow Xbox 360 out of the water! Have you even played the 360? I suggest you do, there are systems (the final product) and demos of games at some WalMarts (They're not as Microsoft boasted, they are just slightly better than the original Xbox).

I just thank Christ I didn't buy it off the internet with all the woeful returns response times and poor service I might have had to endure.

In comparison with the PS2 and Gamecube, Xbox has many great and maybe revolutionary features, but doesn't seem to be using them to their full advantage. The games I've seen and played for the Xbox are beautiful graphically, but often lack gameplay and are not very fun to play. It's great if a game looks and sounds good, but it's even better if it's fun to play. Xbox also has a long way to go if they're gonna be able to compete with Sony and Nintendo. Overall, Xbox may have a lot of punch, but it's too bad that it landed off target.

The Xbox does NOT have a lower maximum resoloution than the PS2 or Gamecube, it actually has the highest resoloution of the 3 consoles (resoloution of 1900x1800 or something like that while the PS2's is like 1800x1400) I don't even bother with gamecube so i don't know it's specs. Face it, the Xbox is alot better than any other console. Microsoft will be taking over the console business. Even if sony does come out with a PS3 its not gonna be as good as The Xbox Version 2. Microsoft is the richest company in the world and has ALOT more money than sony does to use for developing the new game systems.

You truly think halo displays the true power of the Xbox? I'm sorry but you're wrong. Halo was only a glimpse of the power of the Xbox..you should see the screenshots from Halo 2. It uses a new means of displaying models called bump-mapping which will make the models look super smooth while using less polygons (who'd a thunk it.)
This of course isn't going to be used with any PS2 games due to the PS2 specs.

ok, i only have one thing to say. Get 4 xboxes together and 16 of your friends and hook them together. Then get 4 copies of halo and 16 controllers. Play ctf at the gulch with all vehicles and you'll guarunteed to have a change of mind. That is one of the best qualities of xbox. For ps2 you would have to spend another 40 50$ to get the modem to be able to do this. Plus you would have to buy the multiple port converter so it could hold 4 controllers per console.

Haha, look at these little anti-pc lets bash m$ kids, the x-box is the most powerful gaming system no doubt! Only problem is lack of games, doesnt get alot of the best titles buts gets its fair share. Take a look at the features of this console and compare to the ps2. I also own a ps2 so im not one of these lets bash m$ kids, also im not one of these windows poweruser person.

In my house we have a Gamecube, Playstation 2, and two Xboxes. I feel that Xbox is by far the best. With superior hardware, software, features such as Xbox live, and the cheapest price of all consoles in the UK market, there is no reason to buy anything else, go play that xbox again and tell me if it really is as 'crud' as you say it is.

Your review is completely biased and you have little reasoning.
P.s. in the user agreements, it states that you have to test the product to rate it. Oh, and turn it on first.

Thank you to the loyal playstation 2 fans...
I have both (xbox & PS2) & they are both excellant.
However the xbox is the more powerful machine & I would go with that if I had to.

YEAH, FANS OF MICROSOFT X-BOX, MAYBE SPEED IS MAGNIFICANT, BUT THE OTHER THINGS ALL SUCK...YOU KNOW THAT?ALSO TO PEOPLE WHO IS PLANNING TO BUY THIS CRUEL GAME CONSOLE, DO NOT BUY IT!~ IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD BUY PS2. MOST X-BOX FANS DO NOT KNOW THAT X-BOX BLOWS UP WHEN YOU LIKE LEAVE IT UP FOR OVER 12 HOURS..YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE FIRE OR HUGE EXPLOSION IN YOUR HOUSE, DO YOU GUYS? YOU ALSO MIGHT GET IN TROUBLE FOR THAT. PS2 AND GAMECUBE DOESN'T BLOW UP THOUGH...BE SMART! LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING...PS2 IS FOR COOL TEENS, GAMECUBE IS FOR EVERYONE...AND X BOX IS FOR ALL THE UNCOOL TEENs ..MICROSOFT HAS TO DEVELOP MORE...TO CATCH UP...IT'S NO MATCH FOR PS2...I USED TO HAVE GAMECUBE..AND I TELL YOU THAT IT IS 10000X BETTER THAN X-BOX...IF YOU DON'T WANT TO NUY IT NOW...WAIT UNTIL 2005..PS3 IS COMING OUT...AND FOR GAMECUBE, THERE WILL BE DVD PLAYER IN IT..ALSO, I HEARD THAT X-BOX 2 IS COMING OUT, BUT OBVIOUSLY, IT IS GOING TO BE WORSE THAN X-BOX.. ..AGAIN, I TELL YA..BE SMART!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know where this guy comes off saying the xbox blows up, I have left mine on all day and have never had any problems with it. Yeah maybe the xbox has some down falls but don't they all. Its all a matter of opinion on which is best. Lets compare some of the features of xbox and ps2 they both cost the same, they both play dvd's, they both play games. The ps2 plays ps1 games, but who's going to buy ps1 games (if they don't already have them)instead of ps2 games. Ps2 games have to have a memory card to save games, xbox has a hard drive memory no card is needed unless you want to buy one. So don't listen to some ones opinion, get the facts for yourself before you make a decision on what you want.

i belive that all three game consoles, Xbox, PS2 and GameCube all do there part in doing what they do best. Entertain.
i don't think any of them are any better or worse than the next. You may have your favouite, but in the long run they are all top of the range entertainment systems.

Steel Dragon.'s Response to 46969_well.'s Review

I think Xbox is and always will be better than the PS2. The Xbox has over double the processing speed of the PS2 and a faster and better video card. The Xbox also supports Dolby 5.1 surround sound which no other console does. The Xbox does not blow up if you leave it on over 12 hours, it may over heat after 12 hours in which case it would automatically shutdown which the PS2 does not do if it overheats (which could lead to damage to the PS2.) You think the PS2 has more games than the Xbox? you may be right there but by this time next year i doubt that it will. The PS2 has been out for 2 years and the Xbox has only been out for 1 year. At the beginning of 2003, the PS2 had 300 games..The Xbox had 250. Now if the Xbox had been out the same amount of time as the PS2, don't you think it would have alot more than 300? Also, most of the games for PS2 are poor and not worth playing. Maybe 25% of them are good the other 75% are trash. Xbox also has the Xbox Live feature which allows easy internet gameplay through a broadband connection only. The PS2 does support 56K but I don't think you would even bother playing online games with a dial up modem due to the enormous amount of lag. The Xbox is bigger than the PS2 but it's not like you take your gaming console with you every where you go.
A new graphics development has been made for games called bump-mapping which makes models look extremely nice and smooth. This new technology is going to be used in Halo 2 and other titles coming out for the Xbox. Is this going to be used on the PS2? The answer to that is no. The PS2 cannot handle bump-mapping.
The Xbox also has a 8 gigabyte harddrive which provides over 50000(around the size of 500+ 128 kb memory cards) blocks of memory. You will never need a memory card with that much space. Another thing that is good about the huge harddrive is you can copy your music onto it and listen to music WHILE playing games.
People may say the Xbox is just a PC that hooks up to the TV. That isn't really true at all. If you had a PC with the same specs it would not be able to run any games that the Xbox can simply because the Xbox is dedicated to running games and running games only. PCs are multi-purpose tools and the speed of the PC gets worn down by the Operating System and other programs running on the machine.
The Xbox is simply the best among the consoles.

Who ever heard of some thing blowing up when its off? I have a XBOX and there is no comparison between XBOX and the rest of the competition. Even without mentioning the graphics the fact that it has a hard-drive puts it head and shoulders above the competition! As for no games what about Metal Gear Solid 2, Splinter Cell, Halo 2, Colin McCrae Rally 3 which is a million times better than its in inferior PS2 equivalent, and not to mention Unreal Championship 2003!!!!

I have an X-BOX and the graphics, gameplay, menu system, network gaming support, features and hardware eclipse the PS2 and GameCube in every way. Okay, maybe there isn't a lot of good games for it yet, but there will be! The X-BOX has too many fans and too much financial backing to go down the tubes like the Saturn and Dreamcast.

I think the consoles are all great for the purpose they were designed.i.e. entertainment. I know the PS2 is good. Why? Because I've got one. I know the Gamecube is great but perhaps accomodates for the younger games player. Why? because my 3 year old son has got one, and I also know that the Xbox is simply amazing. Some of the great games I have played like Splinter Cell, Halo, Project Gotham quite simply could not be reproduced on the other 2 consoles to the same level of graphical quality. It's not that I have a 'I love Microsoft' scarf at home, it is quite simply a fact that at the moment the Xbox is the most powerful console out there. I hope to see some more mature reviews in future where people only comment on things they have had experience with.

ok, listen up all you xbox fans. I know that Xbox is faster, and yada yada. oh, and you don't need a memory card, yada yada. This is not what makes a system great. What is a system when it has no good games to back it up. Okay, I know what your thinkin, HALO. well, in case you haven't noticed halo is dead and gone, and guess what there hasn't been a good game since. And i'm sure there won't be anymore good games coming out for xbox. Probably becasue it has no good developers behind it. Now lets look at the ps2, okay, it might be a little slower, maybe that's because its a year older? But who cares about that when you have awsome games and plenty of them. So now you see that you don't have a good system without any good games
