For the second time Apropos have taken client deposits and then gone into administration. Will they Phoenix the company again, ready to do the same a third time?

“Very poor service and misleading sales”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/02/2016

We chose Apropos after much consideration due to our belief they would provide a high quality product and principally because they led us to believe they would handle all aspects of the design and liaison with builder to get the project completed. We are busy working people and so wanted as little hassle as possible. We couldn't have been more wrong. From the moment we signed a contract things started to go wrong. The design they came up with clearly breached permitted development rights, even on cursory inspection. Yet they were adamant it did not require planning permission - it later became clear it did and they eventually sought planning permission, further delaying the project. The designs are produced late in the process - they work around their own manufacture time ahead of install which is fine for them, but how is your builder supposed to know what structure to build without the drawings? This delay made us postpone our build until we had all the drawings. The apropos surveyor didn't bother to survey inside the house and the initial drawings did not show internal beams that would need to tie into the new opening for the kitchen extension. Despite the sales person knowing all about and us having discussed it in detail. I spotted this error after talking to the 3rd party structural engineers they sub-contract to. In which case you might as well just contract someone yourself and have the control (and probably cheaper). The drawings are good for foundations etc, but still do not cover every aspect of the build e.g roof construction etc. This is key as we had planned for 150mm upstand above the folding doors but now have 300mm as the designs do not reflect the location of the beam and roof construction - as far as Apropos is concerned that is an issue for you and your builder, despite their sales people promising they handle every aspect of the build, working hand in hand with your builder - a blatant lie. Our builder tried calling them once and the person at Apropos made noises and pretended there was a bad line and hung up on him! The apropos pricing is deliberately obscure. We made a slight change to the design just before we signed the contract which added £1500 to the cost and later tried to revert back to the original design - we were then told the price wouldn't change. The sales director later admitted that their sales person in question had simply added on £1500 as personal commission, despite telling us it was due to cost of materials and glass. They eventually reduced the price by £600 after repeatedly chasing them over the reduction in materials for the doors. At almost every stage of interaction they have failed to deliver to the quality they sold their service on. They clearly have no effective quality control processes - everything sent from them is either incorrect or late. When they came to install our doors and windows they realised they had 'forgotten' to make the window frame and we had to wait a further 2 weeks until it was all finally installed, adding further cost and hassle to us. I voiced my frustration to the installation team who said "We hear that about Apropos almost everywhere we go ". I think that says enough. We ade a fomal complaint to the MD who replied assuring us that everything would be handled better going forward. The very next thing they did was wrong and so it continued. When we finally complained again after installation and the missing window frame, he didn't even bother to acknowledge us. It tells me the company is poorly managed from top-down and their focus is simply on getting their money from you and not customer satisfaction. We still have marks on the door frames where the paint wasn't applied correctly in manufacture but have so little faith in them correcting it that we agreed to settle on a reduced final payment just to end the misery of dealing with them. If you are not put off, then check every aspect before you sign and be aware of your rights when they get pushy under the Consumer Protection from unfair trading regulations. I felt we were misled about the price and the manner in which the price was calculated i.e. commission versus material costs. I reported it to the DCGOS and the OFT. This was our personal experience and it was very unsatisfactory from start to finish. Every other trade or supplier we dealt with during our project was the exact opposite of Apropos - they were courteous, honest and helpful. Apropos were not and i would not recommend them to anyone

“Contining problems”

★☆☆☆☆

written by HarrisKA on 21/10/2015

We faced issues from design errors, one product was still wrong when it arrived, and ongoing problems with leaks and draughts. As we were supplied by the "old" Apropos the "new" company initially refused help, until we discovered on a web site that as we had used Barclays finance the "new" company had to cover our warranty. We have had many visits in the last few years each one has taken long periods to arrange and some required multiple visits. We still have issues, yet another leak which this time seems to involve a sealed unit. Our long term concerns are around our doors, as the whole unit moves when they are fully open, and what we will do when our warranty expires. We have logged all this with the company in the past, managers have been sent but the bottom line is that the product does not deliver reliability.

“Very poor workmanship”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GianniFaulkner423 on 21/09/2015

Four years ago we had an orangerie extension added to our restaurant plus a bi-fold boor to our kitchen above the restaurant which was also the entrance to our flat. When the doors were fitted to our kitchen I asked how to open them from outside but were told " you can't open them from the outside". I pointed out that this was our entrance. They fitted a grab handle on the outside. Bad planning. As far as the orangerie is concerned we had a lot of problems. Apropos engineers had to come back several times to refit broken gaskets and many other little repairs. It was no surprise that they went bust. Of course their 5 year guarantee was useless and as with many other dodgy companies they simply changed their trading name and carried on. The building work that was carried out by an outside contractor is well constructed. Last year we were unable to open the doors on the Orangerie and were at a real loss as what to do but fortunately I have found a local firm who have repaired the doors at a cost of over a thousand pounds. The chap who has carried out the repairs was amazed at the poor workmanship. Because of the weight of the doors hinges have been bent and the doors have dropped so that they scrape along the bottom of the frame. I will need to have yearly service visits with subsequent costs. This company's advertisements in weekend papers etc., look great but I would urge anybody thinking of using them to look elsewhere.

“Don't trust them”

written by on 22/03/2015

We spent £50k on bi-fold doors and lantern windows in 2910 /11. We immediately had problems with leaks and faulty locks. We phoned constantly but were fobbed off, they then went into administration and of course refused to deal with our problems. The same people bought the Company under pre-pack ! With summer approaching we are again unable to open our doors! We don't know where to go now to resolve our problems . We trusted them because of the claims made in their advertisements and their guarantees. Avoid these despicable people at all costs !

Good Morning,

As we do not have a complaint form from you we are unable to address your issues directly. If you could go into a little more detail about your problem with our guarantee we may be able to better open a dialogue.

We are unsure why this problem has arisen but would like to get to the bottom of this for you. As it stands we believe there has been some form of misunderstanding - if your structure was completed in 2011 then your guarantee will still be valid.

It would be a great help if you could provide us with your order number so we can begin to seek a reconciliation and arrange for our remedial team to come out to you. Please accept our apologies for any break down of communication thus far, let's try and get to the bottom of this, and sort those doors out in time for the summer sun!

“After a great sales pitch we were induced into paying...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by StarofDavid on 31/10/2014

After a great sales pitch we were induced into paying a £10,000 deposit. We specifically asked and we are sure they they said if we didn't get planning permission we would get a refund less costs and that the costs would amount to no more than £1000. We were told they would liaise with the council about our project and keep us informed. We heard nothing from Apropos about our planning application and had to contact the council ourselves to find out that the plans had been rejected. Subsequently we requested a refund of our deposit from Apropos on a number of occasions but heard nothing from them for nearly three months, despite sending them a warning letter saying that if we didn't hear from them we would take legal action. After spending a further £410 taking legal action they finally responded saying they would refund our deposit less costs but that the costs amounted to ~£4000. They also said "With regards to your actual refund, Apropos have at no time declined to return your deposit less costs occurred. Our terms and conditions I'm afraid do not stipulate a time frame in which this amount will be returned to you. To recuperate your costs in this manner is obviously entirely your decision and Apropos are not responsible for the costs you have occurred throughout the process." Stay away from this company - you will waste your time and money.

“horrible and unreliable, complete con!!!...”

Apropos conservatories (formally Apropos techtronic) left us with a set of broken electronic windows. they then went into insolvency to get rid of all the previous debt and guarantee's (they have done this to a lot of people). after they started up again i tried to ask them to fulfill there promise and they wouldn't. they have cost me thousands. honestly avoid! i tried speaking to the owner as well to see if there was any care or remorse about what his company has done to me and lots of others and he wouldn't speak to me. they have to care for the customers, only after money. i have also found out that days before going out of business they were advertising in the Sunday times, amazing how they had the money to do that and not pay their creditors.

“Still leaking - Forget Apropos Customer Service ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CBReview on 03/02/2014

We installed a very expensive, considering the simplicity of the design, Apropos lean-to conservatory less than 18 months ago. Less than a year after installation, it began to leak A LOT -- water was literally dripping into our kitchen at both ends of the gutterbox. Apropos' response? To claim it is simply not their fault WITHOUT EVER HAVING TAKEN THE GUTTER APART TO CHECK! No concept what Customer Service or Quality looks like. We had 3 Apropos engineers out, 2 of whom definitely indicated that the conservatory itself could be at fault and the last of whom PROMISED they would disassemble the gutter to check for appropriate sealing, or lack thereof. On the day, a 4th team, never having seen the conservatory before, arrived and declared that every Apropos employee who had looked at the gutterbox up until that time was an idiot and that absolutely nothing was wrong with their clearly faultless structure. Even though it was leaking where conservatory structure met conservatory structure -- how can that be our builders' fault?? Apropos is a fantastic sales organisation with one person manning the Customer Service line and a legion of people in denial about the faultlessness of their structures. I would never recommend them to anyone as you never know when something can go wrong and Apropos will clearly never take responsibility. The last of their credibility was shredded when their employees started to tell us that other Apropos employees didn't have a clue. Why would we ever believe them?

“Ongoing troubles!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/01/2014

Two years on from installation we are still waiting for Apropos to make our bi-fold doors draught proof. This follows an awful service from design, where they failed to get the measurements correct even after repeated efforts, to the wrong size doors nearly being supplied (our builder picked it up just before manufacture). On the day, the installation seemed to be smooth and satisfactory, but once the room was in use it was clear the doors were so draughty that there are times when the room cannot be used. The rest of the time a blanket is needed. We have also had a roof leak. The walls at the side of the frame are now turning black where condensation is forming on the frame (we have always said there was a problem here are we could not get the plaster dry). During warm weather we also have to plan our opening of the doors as, the single door in particular, will not lock for 30 minutes after being closed. We are not south facing either. As we were also caught by the "buy out" the "new" Apropos tried to say we were not covered for remedial work despite the Barclays finance. It was only after we read another post re this and insisted that they backed down and provided after care. However, this after care has been hard to come by and despite two visits from "Managers" to make recommendations our doors are still draughty. The last visit was in August 2013, which had taken months to arrange, a report was promised on the work needed. This has never been provided and an eventual scheduled date just before Christmas to do the work was cancelled again. We are left with a room that looks fantastic but is a constant source of disappointment and ongoing worry for the long term. A previous post highlights the need for extra hinges on over-height doors (he was delighted with the extra ones on his). However our over 3m tall doors only have 4 hinges - another long term concern for us!

“Absolutely mind boggling dreadful”

★☆☆☆☆

written by s_H_91 on 26/02/2013

I have had a dreadful experience from start to finish. I got taken in by grandiose promises of a large extension, which I have subsequently learned from two local architects would never have got planning consent. I have been pursuing this since August 2012 - was promised an extension by Christmas. It's now February and I'm at Square 1. They submitted my planning application without any regard for local planning practice, any conversations with the council and expect them to get through. They waste your money. I am still trying to get back my £6,000 deposit back. I have sent letters, emails and started phoning up every day. Each time I ring up I'm told I will be contacted that afternoon. Then today someone actually rang me at 5.10pm to let me know that everyone had gone home!

“Apropos Ostriches”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Order2636 on 25/01/2013

In July 2012 we requested Apropos to arrange for a sales person to visit us and discuss our ideas around a single storey glass extension, 5x3 metres. My wife and i were told that Apropos do not offer discounts and that the price quoted would be the cost. we were not sent the quote as this had to be delivered by the sales person a few days later. On review the building costs for a slab and two walls which came to around £19K. I challenged this and after a phone call this was reduced to £12K. The cost of the Apropos roof and bi-fold doors came to £43K, following yet another discussion this was later reduced to £34K. This should have warned us that Apropos say one thing and do the opposite. Since placing the order we have constantly chased Apropos for updates. we were amazed that during the planning application process and following a call from us to the planning authority we found out that they had not received payment and the application had not been processed. following a call to Apropos they informed us that the authority had lost the original payment and a new one had been sent. Through out this process we have constantly chased for information, the last straw was following planning approval in December 2012 we was told that there would be delivering and installing the extension in 8 weeks, end of February 2013. We informed them that as we are arranging our own builders, due to the cost of theirs, 8 weeks is not long enough to review drawings (which we have not received) and go to tender, negotiate on price and have the ground works, walls erected in time for them. Apropos agreed to delay the installation until the end of March 2013. Come the end of December 2012 i chased them for the drawings, only to be told that they are not scheduled for production until the end of January 2013 as they only produce them 8 weeks before installation. As a result of there unprofessional, lack of communication we feel we have been miss-sold and we have cancelled the order. We requested the return of our deposit less reasonable costs for the planning application. We have just been told that they will not return our monies owed.

Aproposuk's Response to Order2636's Review

Written on: 12/02/2013

We are sorry that you have not allowed us to fulfil your contract thus far in spite of full planning being granted. The initial delays with the council were out of our control; the council confirmed receipt of the electronic application and advised us (as is standard) that they were awaiting payment. The cheque was sent the same day by first class mail. It transpired that the cheque (which they received 24 hours after the application) was ‘somewhere’ on a desk in the office with some other payments for processing. The council did not inform us they were sitting on the payment because of acute administrative delays. When we contacted them they advised they were severely behind so we suggested stopping the cheque and making a card payment. They agreed and payment was made immediately. The council apologised for this delay. In turn we passed this apology on.

The procedure which we have set in place for the release of the technical drawing is triggered by the installation schedule. Your project was number 10 in the drawing queue; however as a gesture and to appease the situation we released the drawing well ahead of timelines and this was issued on 09 January 2013, this only being a few days after your request for the drawing to be sent urgently. Your drawing was prioritised over others which were therefore pushed down the queue. Our terms and conditions do stipulate that refunds of deposits are only due where if a project fails planning and your project was fully approved. It did not fail planning.

We welcome constructive comments and apologise if you feel we let you down in any way. However we would of course still like the opportunity to install your structure for the originally scheduled date at end of March, week 13, in line with the order that you placed with us.

“The worst customer service in the world”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ATW80 on 10/08/2012

To those looking at using Apropos - Don't. Customers service is non-existent Installation was poor Drawings were wrong and entailed significant additional cost Dealing with the myriad of post installation issues is non-existent You will never get to speak to the same person twice and they all have sloping shoulders. Their installation manager even suggested their surveyor miss-sold the solution and service we signed up for. Wish I had never succumbed to the flash advertising which completely misrepresents their quality of service in my view.

I have just googled 'Apropos poor quality' in an attempt to find out whether other customers have had the same bad experience. It took 8 attempts for the plans to be anywhere near accurate. Their recommended builders told us we had been misled over the building cost, which almost doubled. I have lost track of the times fittings, parts and doors have needed fixing/ replacing. Oh, and they have recently gone bust and set up again so our guarantee is void..

“Stay away from these cowboys”

★☆☆☆☆

written by milesniblett on 30/07/2012

I paid a £7,000 deposit to Apropos Techtonic in late 2010 for an extension to my flat in West London. It took over a year to get planning permission which was eventually rejected. During that time Apropos were utterly hopeless, terrible at keeping in touch, made lots of mistakes on the submission (including applying for planning for the wrong address!). Once we found out that the planning was rejected and ask for our deposit back, we were told that Apropos Techtonic had gone into administration and our money was gone. The directors of Apropos in the meantime had set up another company with the same premises, staff and advertising and continue to trade! Steer well clear.

“Apropos won't honour their guarantee”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jogdial on 17/07/2012

We had a glass roof installed less than a year ago. This was after the builder that they recommended we use stole £5000 (John Tierney) of which we haven't got a penny back yet going through the courts. The roof now leaks and they will not honour the 5 year guarantee as they are trading under a new name... all the same people seem to be working in the offic though. We also did a Barclay Finance deal and the balance isn't due to be paid until October. The Barclay Finance paperwork clearly states that we may be able to sue them if we get poor product, or the company goes out of business and doesn't fulfill it's obligations. I have called Barclays and so far they seem to want to avoid this, so I am hopeful that we will be able to work with Barclays to resolve this mess.. I wouldn't touch Apropos with a barge pole if you are looking for a good supplier.

Although this is a rather unconventional form of contact, your anonymity dictates necessity, and we would like to advise you as to our policies concerning guarantees dated prior to the administration of Apropos Tectonic.

Your review states a decision to purchase your Apropos through Barclays' finance which means that, in actual fact, your guarantee will be honoured by us.

We also apologise for the problems you have encountered with your builder however, as noted, builders are independent of Apropos and therefore we cannot accept any responsibility for this. Apropos recommends builders in order to help our client and speed up the installation process and will, of course, no longer be recommending this building firm to future clients.

Therefore please contact someone within head office who will be happy to discuss your guarantee and schedule a date for remedial works.

We would also appreciate if, once you are happy with our service, you amend this review; as information within it is false and therefore an unfair representation of our company.

We hope to hear from you soon,

The Apropos Team

further updates... Apropos has now visited - along with my builder as I didnt want any finger pointing that couldn't be resolved. They resealed several areas and replaced some of the door gaskets. two of the leaks at the bottom of the structure are still a mystery... they put some more sealant in and my builder took things apart and couldn't find anything he did was leaking either. It is a case of damp getting in somewhere, we have stripped it all back and await to see what the next rains bring. The team then sent out was very meticulous I have to say and I am happy that they are woking with me now and that my guarantee is at least being honoured. If the problems are finally resolved, then I am happy, but I have to say that it has been a bit of a bumpy journey.

So I contacted Apropos on the 24th of July. After finally getting through to the guarantee department, I was told that yes my guarantee would be honoured. I was told I would be contacted by their guarantee team. Over a week later and not even a call to arrange a date. Meanwhile the roof still leaks and water continues to damage the interior works. As promised, I plan to document how this turns out for good or bad, at the moment it looks bad and I will continue my complaints with Barclays Finance as the goods are not fit for use. I will be happy to retract these statements if Apropos make good on their guarantee but currently posting here seems to be the only thing that gets their attention.

I have now contacted your head office and have been told that the warranty team will contact me and that my guarantee will be honoured because we used the Barclay Finance. I will update this review when the problems have been resolved and in show of good faith hope this will be resolved. I feel bad for anyone that did not use Barclay Finance but can not comment on that. Fingers crossed that everything will be resolved.

“Steer well clear”

★☆☆☆☆

written by WhatHappenedToMe on 15/07/2012

Steer clear of Apropos people, I wish we had. We have also had nothing but problems with this company from the outset and wish we had cut our loses rather than believing their promises. We spent a huge amount on a conservatory which may 'appear' nice but has NEVER been fit for purpose. It has never been watertight - which is surely the most basic requirement of such a structure - in fact it has sprung more leaks the longer it has been up, several of the double glazed panels have shattered on one side, glass panes on the roof are slipping and bits of the glazing framing falling off. It has always been very draughty and much of the paint has worn off our colour matched handles. Our bifold doors won't open after a 'botched repair' and the vents do not provide adequate ventilation so the design in that respect is poor. Our floor tiles and several items of furniture have been damaged by constant leaks and flooding and we cannot use the room as we had intended because of the leaks. I see many new customers saying the fitting team were wonderful - I would have said the same at the time, they seemed to know what they were doing . . . but as it turned out later they had made many mistakes with the job and each new team sent turned out to be as incompetent as the last. Apropos sent various teams back dozens of times to deal with the problems, each crew blamed the previous team for the problems we were experiencing. Some faults were due to mistakes at the factory such as not drilling drain holes in the doors (in attempting to sort this out the structure was effectively vandalised with the repair team using a hand drill to make new drain holes in the structure where they weren't needed, rather than actually identifying the real cause of flooding). Each time they were very confident they had remedied the faults, each time it turned out they had not and in the end, after giving them so many chances - and believe me all we wanted was for the structure to be watertight and to say goodbye to the stress and worry - we realised they were in fact UNABLE to fix things, they were incompentet. They also told me they had carried out repairs which I later found had not been carried out when I went up a ladder and saw the state of things. We had an expert look at the structure with a view to taking legal action and he said it was shockingly bad and that the whole thing should be torn down and rebuilt. They went out of business and restarted with almost the same name and with the same people at the helm so all I can say is learn from our experiences and go elsewhere.

I have had the same problem and now going through the process of the courts against Barclays Partner Finance. I have also contacted the regulator regarding Apropos Tectonic going into administration.
Would be great to get more details from you to support both our cases against Apropos and Barclays as I believe there is a bigger problem here.

“nightmare”

Absolutly appaling aftercare, you know why they want 95% of the money upfront. They rushed and completly bodged the job, and have been out no less than 50 (yes fifty) times to fix countless problems. They are keen to blame anyone else, all my builders falut they reckoned. Then said we should have had building and planning after telling us we did not need it, and that they'd inform the council on us if we didn't pay the balance. It passed both without a problem but they were still difficult, although waived the 5% balance. My advice, avoid with a barge pole.

“my experience of choosing apropos.”

Designer gave excellent advice about how I could put my ideas about the structure I wanted into a practical solution. Was kept informed throughout the process from initial drawings, detailed plans, planning permission etc. The actual installation was quick and effecient. I used a builder recommended by Apropos-the advantage was that he had done lots of work already with Apropos and had a good line of communication when necessary. On the downside I did find some calls I made to the office were not dealt with particularly efficiently. Have also found the builder to be slow in finishing off the work. He started in mid January and has still not finished. This is both annoying and frustrating. Onthe whole I found the process worked well and I am very pleased with the result. Although, I could have paid a lot less elsewhere, I think I made the right choice.

“Do not use”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Clairekaloo on 05/03/2012

We have been dealing with apropos for a year now and do have an impressive final product (two storey glass structure). However, from the start there have been some serious issues and huge frustrations dealing with them. Their customer care is non existent, attention to detail non existent, joined up thinking - non existent. Every person we have dealt with from designer onwards has either left the company or changed roles. As such we were left with no point of contact throughout the design phase and construction . eventually I did all the measurements, came up with the design and it was me highlighting the potential pitfalls of our project. During this phase I had no confidence in anyone I met or spoke with. Our project manager, despite having the right numbers, was always passed from pillar to post. The installation team were great - efficient, pleasant and knew the product. Post fitting customer care has been shocking - not helped by the company going into administration on the last week of our build. A particularly fickle regional manager who ignored all my calls/e mails throughout the last 10 months then had the audacity to visit and say what a great job had been done. Use this company ONLY if you have to - I can only speak as someone doing a biggish domestic project on a listed building. They may however be great for corporate or small simple 'conservatories'. Our advice though - if you want to be sane by the end of your build try to find a smaller, reputable company that needs you to engage with them

“avoid at all costs ”

This company appears to have gone into liquidation and then resurrected itself without honouring any current guarantees or warranties. Our new skylight leaks and I understand that 22 other customers are in a similar position. Do not trade with these people (they also used to trade as 'Clearspan')

Yes I can only echo what so many others are saying. I run a design and build company and having instructed Apropos Tectonic to complete the works, I am left with a half finished project having paid in advance as per their Contract terms and conditions. Thankfully I have industry colleagues that can help and sort out this problem but this is very poor business practice. A phoenix business is now in operation; no surpise there. Companies like this blight the industry.

We have been advised to have extra thick/insulation in our side walls (for our Apropos glass extension) but it will mean losing precious floor space. It is a North West facing extension. Can anyone comment on heat loss?
