“Never fallen out with my puma”

★★★★☆

written by Susanpuma1 on 23/01/2013

My puma 1.7 02 is still a pleasure to drive. I have owned it for 11 years and have never fallen out with it. It still looks good on the road and has never really dated. I did test drive a mini not long ago and to be honest could not justify £18,000 against my puma that actually provides me with a/c heated front window CD player electric windows great boot size great sports car feel. Yes it has suffered with some rust over rear wheel arch which I had seen to for £300 now looks as good as new. My puma gives me everything I need from a sporty little motor. Looking at previous negatives : water dribbles in boot sides when it's opened - design fault , road tax is expensive, rear parcel shelf drops off hinges at times and rear wheel arches rust - all points can be tolerated for enjoyment of being a puma owner.

“Punchy Impressive Slick”

★★★★☆

written by JamesArnold2012 on 07/04/2012

I recently purchased a Puma 1.7 Zetec-s With VCT (Variable Cam timing). Underneath it is just a Mk4 Fiesta (with the 1.6 Zetec - s Engine, Bored out to a 1700). It handles like a dream, Although when the rear end gets happy , It gets too excited! The Brake traction Control System is brilliant, as is the ABS. The engine is super Rev happy (being co-developed with yamaha) and pumps out 123BHP. Mine has a K+N Cone air Filter (with crank case Breather) and a Scorpion rear box. Even on 123,000 miles it goes like S*it off a Shovel, 320D BMW's Say bye bye! It even out accelerates them in all gears! Ive had 127mph out of mine (which is Fords stated Top Speed due to their limiter). Heres my Ratings. Acceleration = 8/10. Top Speed = 10/10. (for a car of it's class) Comfort = 6/10. (before i had an Escort GTi with leather interior ;). Ride = 8/10. Things to watch for: Tracking and balancing, Rust on the offside rear arch and finally, get your Anti Roll bar links Checked out and also the Bushes on the rear axle swing arm ;) That is all

“I have only owned my Puma for a short while but...”

★★★★★

written by NickyD89 on 09/05/2009

I have only owned my Puma for a short while but already feel very pleased with this sporty coupe.

My Puma is a 2001 (Y) 1.7 in Panther Black with 30,000 miles. I was chuffed to find such a low mileage example because most 8 year old pumas have covered a fair bit more mileage. Its only my second car and an upgrade from a diesel Seat Arosa! Quite an upgrade but I was looking for a decent drivers car that is still reasonably practical and not too common (was initially looking at a mk5 zetec-s, glad I went for the much more stylish Puma).

The engine is a 1.7 Zetec-se unit that punches out 123bhp and 116 ft/lbs of torque. All very well and good but what that translates into on the real world is strong low-rev and midrange acceleration (if you don't feel up for thrashing it you really don't need to). However, if you do rev it past 4500 rpm you will be treated to very good acceleration that is always silky smooth in its delivery, accompanied with a great exhaust note!

Downsides? Visibility out the back is poor, boot is actually probably better than you think its going to be but still not great (obviously), economy is poor when revved past 4000 rpm regularly but not bad if driven casually (30+ mpg is achievable without too much difficulty) and finally you'll only fit adults in the back if you really make an effort to put the seats forward in the front.

So in conclusion, the plus sides completely outweigh the down sides for me personally. So you are looking for a sporty, great driving coupe then the puma will fit the bill a treat!

Exellent performance and handling. Good gearbox, very close ratio's, altogether a superb drivers car with big fun element. To sum up, a superb fun car with a real sense of sporty young carisma! An absolute hoot to drive on a country road, feeling very positive and lively, with gear ratios that help get the best from the flexible variable cam timing. Stunning good looks, no good for familys, but then you would buy an estate instead!

★★★★★

written by abbi1412 on 01/03/2006

The Ford Puma 1.7 is simply a dream. I have had mine for over a year and love, love, love it. It's so cheap for what you get. It grips the road, picks up speed quickly, and it's just so stylish! The engine noise is really encouraging and gives it a great sporty feel.

I've seen on many reviews there are references to fuel consumption. It costs around £27 to fill the tank. I commute to work 5 days per week and use it a lot socially, and I fill it up about every 10 - 12 days. Really for it's speed and power, and the fuel consumption is actually pretty good.

If you're thinking of buying one I would certainly recommend it! If you like speed this is the car for you. I doubt you can find such a great little sporty car for such a little price tag! Just be aware of paying high insurance premiums and the highest tax bracket etc. However, you'll soon forget all that when you take it down an open country road on a summers day.

written by SCutchey on 28/02/2006

The interior and exterior of the Ford Puma look superb. The handling is just brilliant with great steering and unbelievable roadholding. The performance is good and really suits the car whilst the gearchange is excellent. It sounds like a normal Fiesta when driving normally but when you open her up on the dual carriageway the engine note is really sporty. A really cherishable little car. Highly recommended.

What can you say about the Ford Puma 1.7? I have had it now for 12 months, and I still smile every time I drive it. It is quick through the gears, handles like a dream, and the noise at 5000rpm is so sweet. All my mates call it a hairdressers car, no such luck! Just point it where you want to go and it goes there, very very very quickly.

I've had the Ford Puma 1.7 sports car for 5 years (x plate) and i'm just trading it in for an Audi TT. Believe me, its hard to let it go. In the 5 years i've had the car its only cost me for new tyres and servicing. This car makes Ford. They should never have stopped production of this car. Its a smart looking car and the interior doesnt let it down. I'm hoping the TT also meets all my expectations and I dont regret letting the Puma go. Who ever buys my car, with only 30K on the clock, will get a real winner.

I bought my Ford Puma 1.7 Sports car from new and comprimised on spec so as they'd stopped making them by the time I bought it and was limited to what was available. But from the minute I drove it away I loved it, it drove briolliant and was great fun on long drives on motorway and country lanes alike.

I would reccommend anyone to purchase one of these cars second hand as they are great cars to own and reasonable to maintain as well. The 1.7 engine is hard to beat on economy and is great off the lights when that idiot is right on your backend.

I would be trading mine in for another if only they continued to make them but instead I am finding it very hard to find a worthy replacement.

Buy a Ford Puma 1.7 lux pack, for the money you will find it hard to beat. Traction control, ABS, air con, a great looking car that will turn heads wherever you go. Driving a puma is a Joy, its responsive, has great road holding, good fuel economy and if you get it regularly serviced resale prices remain boyant. This little car was BBC Top Gear car of the year so that has to say a lot and they even managed to get Jeremy Clarkson in the front seat.

WHY have you stopped making the Ford Puma 1.7 superb car Ford?? Best thing I have ever done was buy my Puma. All the fun of fast and responsive driving with the practicality of being able to get 4 people and luggage in it when needed! My Puma is now 4 years old and would normally look to replace it but I can't find anything on the market to come close and as the idiots at Ford only seem to make bricks and MPVs nowadays it now looks like I will have to keep it...shame :).

“From purchasing this Ford Puma 1.7 sports car back in...”

★★★★★

written by eelpie on 25/09/2004

From purchasing this Ford Puma 1.7 sports car back in June 2003 my car has broken down once, leaked water from just about everywhere, almost caught fire, blown an exhaust, rattled and squeaked.

From this you may assume that I have not enjoyed my Puma, but you would be wrong. After finding a small lake of algae and mould under the passenger carpet I decided to start from scratch.

I stripped the car down inside removing all carpets and upholstery, all the internal wiring and crisp packets were removed. I then spent about £150 on sound deadening and silicone sealant, lined all the panels and re-sealed all the holes for wiring. The result no leaks and 90% of rattles gone.

My brakes caught fire and clutch assembly shattered after one good ragging, I decided it was time to upgrade them. Pumabuild or Pumaspeed are a good place to start, upgrade brakes to 2000 size EBC's, upgrade clutch and slave cylinder to Helix or AP Racing (about £1000 in all). This may seem like alot but I thrashed a lotus elise last week!

If you want a shopping car buy a KA, If you want a car that can embarrass cars costing 3 times as much buy a Puma. Don't bother with a 1.4 or 1.6 or "special edition" (such as Puma Black) the extras increase the weight too much. If you're loaded get a FRP (Ford Racing Puma) and have FUN!

ABOVE ALL REMOVE THE "FORD" FROM YOUR PUMA AND SHE'LL LAST WELL.

The Ford Puma 1.7 is an excellent car with good looks and performance for the money, would recommend to anyone. Only annoying snag is the ride noise seems quite harsh at around 70 mph. Not sure if this is a problem or just tyre noise. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Sounds like you have an engine fuel sensor problem. I had this on my Puma (back in 1998) and took it back to the garage. The fuel sensors set the engine richness, so if they are faulty, the engine runs too rich which is not only bad for the fuel economy, but is also bad for spark plugs.

written by rolfieh on 08/10/2003

The Ford Puma 1.7 was my first Ford and I approached it with much trepidation (I can still remember when Ford stood for Fix Or Repair Daily. The looks of the car is what really attracted me and good reviews alround. I managed to pick up a 6 month old one for just over £10k when Peuguots 205 were £1-2k more.

I have generally been impressed with the car and it is still a pleasure to take on long journeys. From a practicallity point of view it has a surprising amount of room in the back when you drop the seats and much DIY material has founs its way home in the back.

My big issues are component reliability and paint quality. So far; front headlight (£200), heated rear windscreen (under warranty) and now rear brake light bar (still to be fixed). The durability of the paint is very poor and with no rub strip on the door ledges I have worn through the paint where my foot touches as I get out.

Generally I would recommend this car but as they get older they could become very much more expensive to run.

Come on, this Ford Puma 1.7 kicks a Tigra's ass! And most coupe/sports models in the class above. The handling is brilliant and I have never come anywhere near to losing it despite some enthusiastic cornering (unlike my old 306). Its dirt cheap to run and almost practical. Only niggles are poor forward visibility (A pillars are ridiculously thick) and the drives seat is still to high even on its lowest setting and I'm only 5'10".

Ford only intended to make around 50K Pumas in total but ended up knocking together well over 200k. Ford obviously thought that a keenly priced, good looking, reasonably quick and excellent handling coupe wouldn't sell, well done to the marketing guys there!! The last Pumas were actually hand built because the fixtures were only designed to build 50K and so by the time 200k had rolled through they were shot! The Puma is just a fiesta in a skirt but don't think i'm knocking it, i'm not, I think its fantastic and is so much more than the sum of its parts. I am a past owner and could go on......but, what i wanted to say in the first place was that if you think a Tigra is better looking then PLEASE go ahead and buy one, i think you're missing the point but at least it leaves more Pumas to people who enjoy driving.

You're wrong!! I was like you always said that I would never own a Ford. I bit the bullet and test drove a 1.7 Puma It was great! I now want one but can't find one (only because I am fussy) the leather interior ones are really classy! My advice to you test drive one compare it to a Tigra(my friend owns one and hates it!)you will be sold!!

“I bought my Ford Puma 1.7 over a year ago in Sicily...”

★★★★★

written by etnaetna on 26/08/2003

I bought my Ford Puma 1.7 over a year ago in Sicily and it was a real bargain, something like £6700 (€9400). The car is dated October 1999 and I was the second owner.

During this first year I have driven it the only problem I have had it's been the valve of hot air. It broke (right in January, typical) and I spent £80.00 for the new one. Apart from this, no major problems. My trip from Sicily to London was very smooth but I found the seats a bit too hard. I was amazed by the consumption of petrol: on the whole it was definetely low. Ford in Italy has always been famous for the high consumptions of fuel.

Driving my Puma on motorways was very enjoyable. The only drawback was that over about 130 Km/h the car didn't deaden the sounds very well, so I had to turn the volume a bit up. However, I'm talking about a sport car (yes, I know; derived from a Ford Fiesta: so what?). If I wanted the maximum comfort and prestige I would buy a big German saloon or a Ferrari (having the money).

I hope in the next couple of years I can still say such positive things about Ford Puma.
