“Absolutely LOVE my euro import”

★★★★★

written by Eyegotgot on 09/11/2013

I have a 2002 540i european imported bmw. All i have to say is that through out my life i have driven many cars but none can even compare to my 540, her handling and performance makes ypu wonder why they dont make all cars like this. One thing for sure that this vehicle does do.... And that is no matter which way i drive or manuever that ass just always stays right under you!

“1999 BMW 540IA Sport M PKG ”

★★★★★

written by on 09/05/2012

I have always loved the BMW 540I Sport for years. I have always leased cars and my last 2 were an 2006 AUDI S4 and a 2010 Audi A6 Sport. And in January of 2011 I found a beautiful 540 and fell in love with.So I purchasaed it and it is a 1999 BMW 540IA Sport M Pkg with only 59k miles on it. I LOVE this car the 4.4 V8 has 282 hp and 325 Lb F Torque is AMAZING. It can throw you back in your seat and next thing you know your doing 100. It is so smooth and tight and quiet. It drives and performed in my opinion better than any car I have ever owned by far. I test drove both the 6 speed manual and the Steptronic Auto versions. And I loved the manual but the Automatic with steptronic trans with the option to drive in sport mode regular mode or I can slap shift like a manual with no clutch was the way to go.Its so smooth and nice and now I know why CAR and DRIVER named it CAR OF THE YEAR. I have had no problems at all except the dash lights. But if you are looking or even thinking about a 1999-2003 BMW 540I drive one you will love it.

written by bmw540 on 11/10/2009

Ive owned two 540's the first a t reg and the current a 52 plate. The performance is amazing especial in manual mode at the traffic lights. It handles brilliantly and seems to look alot better than for eg a 528. the newer model with the double vanos engine seems to pick up better than the older 1. My new one is fully loaded and i love the tv in traffic jams. the car is great on petrol for a 4.4 v8 i averaged 34 mpg on the motorway. i still have the origianal 2002 sat nav dvd which works ok but there are a few roads missing. i dont bother with the phone but i does work great when you can get a signal. i have a rare colour called blue water metalic and rare alloys it looks great and does get some looks. the only problems i have had where on the t reg model with the rain sensors and a split expansion tank which where minor repairs. the v8 could sound better even though you can still here the rumble. the a/c is brill it gets so cold very quickly and the heater gets hot very quickly. the only thing i dont like is how the mirrors dip when you put it in reverse. the front and rear parking sensors are very handy and did you know the uk/eu spec 540 is slightly quicker than the us version.

I bought my BMW 540i, 2002, as a part exchange with an older BMW 520i, but in a main dealer. I was already delighted with a 520i for comfort and built quality. I found all this and a lot more in my 540i. More power, faster, more torque, and still, this beast can be driven in a very gentle and diligent way. I enjoy every moment behind the wheels of that car.

written by on 18/04/2009

I have owned my BMW 5 Series 540 6 speed (the one to have) for over 5 years now after my good friend bought and owned the car from new so I know the history from day one. Its crystal green metalic, full sport body kit 19" split rim BBS alloys, schnitzer door mirrors. boot lid lip spoiler, xenon headlight upgrade, grooved front discs with performance brake pads re-mapped to 315hp, de-speed restricted so there is non of that annoying cutting out at 155mph as confirmed by an embarrased Porsche Boxster owner (haha) This is without doubt the best overall car i have owned no question.Last summer I parked next to a new shape 5 series in a car park, when I returned the owner of the (525 i think it was?) said ""I wished you hadnt parked that next to mine as he owned a 540 and made the BIG mistake of trading it in for his boring and expensive new 5 series. I told him that even after owning my car for over 5 years still everyday this car puts a smile on my face. How many saloon cars can you say that about??? Everyday at my work someone will comment how sexy this car looks and then they usually say "I wouldnt like to put the fuel in it though" they seem very supprised when I tell them on a steady run I will return figures around 30mpg. and in any case even if it was returning 10mpg I still wouldnt sell it as its that good a car.
i used to own a 523 and I thought that was a good car. If you were thinkin about getting one dont think just do it. you wont regret it

“I purchased my 2003 540iA (with the full M-sport pkg)...”

written by Sammy the Eagle on 20/03/2009

I purchased my 2003 540iA (with the full M-sport pkg) in Feb/09 in Vancouver BC and drove it back to Manitoba. After going thru 'Rogers Pass' in the Rockies I was tempted to go back and do it again. Everytime I get in the car I can't wipe the grin off my face, other 540i owners know what I mean. The car is a monster, it will go, turn, stop on your every whim. I look for excuses to go drive it. It is incredibly hard to hold back the horses under the hood and when you do let them loose the sound of a V-8 is a 'back of your neck hair raising experience'. If you have the chance get one and start living! I have the sport seats and as such they have higher bolster pads and they can make entry and exit a little more deliberate. However once in the seat its like your in the arms of a 37 year old cougar! Other than that there are no bad points!

My husband bought me a 1999 BMW 540i wagon with the Premium package in 2007 in Canada. Despite him offering to look a the Audi, Volvo and Passat equivalents, after reading the reviews I kept being lured to the 540. After driving this car for only a short time, I knew that there is absolutely no comparison: the BMW wins hands down in all categories. It's sleek, the power response is when you need it, no lag. The inside is a pleasure, and the heated steering wheel, which I thought was a gimmick, means you can drive it barehanded in -30 degrees. We just moved over to Europe and wondered what to do with the car.. Realising that nothing can replace the ride this car delivers without spending mucho dinero made us decide to bring it. Since then, it has gleefully blasted on the Autobahns, through the Balkan mountains where the triptonic shift was invaluable, and where its guaranteed power guaranteed passing in the short &steep passing zones. No major expenses so far. Just absolutely love it.

I own a 2003 540 Stick Sport Very smooth power, quite at speed... I can get about 30 MPG at 60-65 MPH on a long trip as long as I watch my throttle and Acceleration. What a dream to drive. I have had the car to 145 Mph and could not believe that it was still pulling!
Wow - I cannot think of an issue - Just a great car. If you put Blizzak Snow Tires on board for the winter months, it just plain GOES even in the snow! With new Snow Tires and at nearly 2 tons...IT GOES!

I chipped, airboxed and opened the exhaust on my stock 540 auto trans and it is a beast. With the right tires and driver with the anti-skid turned off this thing wil roast almost anyone that wants to race.

Over all in the 4 years of BMW 540i V8 ownership rarely did I have to worry about the 540's reliability and only when fuel prices have got silly have I had to get rid. Can you imagine moving to a 2 l diesel!

I bought my silver 2001 BMW 540i Sport 3 months ago and have been in heaven ever since. Great power and comfort and very importantly to me extremely safe which with a 13 month old child is a high priority. There is nothing out there with as much spunk and pure poise!

Tell you what, give your BMW 540 a wash on a nice day and then hit the highway for a little cruise, it ' s the best feeling know that your driving the quintessential sports sedan with endless capabilities, while it ' s spotless on a nice day. I bought my triple black 97 540 I 6 speed about two months ago and I am still in awe. The car is fast as anything as long as you keep the rpm over 3400. No problems with anything.

“The E39 BMW 540i shares its body and basic trim with...”

★★★★★

written by on 12/02/2008

The E39 BMW 540i shares its body and basic trim with the 520i, 523i, 525tds, 528i, 530d, 535i and the almighty M5. It is a 5-series (medium sedan) and has a 4.4 liter displacement V8 engine, the M62, with VANOS. We could go on with numbers all day (and will, later) but for now, let's talk about the car.

The car is incredibly stable. I have to make judicious use of the cruise control in order to not get ticketed. Maneuvers at speed, both sudden and gradual, happen with firmness. Above around 70, if you jerk the wheel, you'll realize that the car could swap ends if you're not careful, but right around that point (on dry pavement) the traction control boots in and tries to sort out your mistakes. So long as you don't persist in doing bad things, you'll be fine

It gets around 18 miles per gallon in city use. Highway driving, keeping it below 70, I get right on 26 with snow tires and 28 with dancing shoes. It is rear-wheel drive (duh) but so long as you actually know how to drive a car and have actual snow tires (not those "all-weather" compromises) you should have no trouble. I've driven mine straight out of four inches of snow when it was wearing boots, no issue. On curvy roads, the slight nose-heavy balance becomes obvious - while it is quite happy slicing and dicing, you are aware you're in a four-door car. The ABS and traction control allow you to retain full control during hard, fast stops - I've tested this. They won't save you from stupidity at high speed on ice, but then, that's not their job.

In addition to seating five, it has a decent-sized trunk (not five people's luggage worth unless they have overnight bags) that can take two golf bags. No, I haven't tested it - but the only 'informative diagram' in the car is a small plaque on the inside of the trunk showing you how to get two golf bags into the boot without banging around the rear deck speakers. It has a tool kit integrated into the trunk lid.

I've owned e39 540 with MU62B44 engine and 6-speed manual gearbox for few months now. It's a fast car ... until it starts to snow. Big engine heats interior real quick, so with traction control it's quite comfortable car even during winter. It is very hard to find better car that would be that fast AND convenient to drive. I probably don't have to add that V8 sounds nice, you all know that already :)

“I traded in my beloved 2001 BMW 530i when I discovered...”

★★★★★

written by toddasummers on 21/10/2007

I traded in my beloved 2001 BMW 530i when I discovered a one owner trade, 2003 BMW 540i V8 6-Speed, being offered as a CPO by a local BMW dealer. It is the last model year of the E39 chassis and mine was the 30th anniversary run of BMW's 5-Series in 9/2002. The engine is a piece of automotive engineering genius. The 6 Speed M-Tecnic Sport Package is a must. It is very difficult not to show ignorant challengers that they have no idea what they're up against. It is unlike any car I've ever owned or driven. The perfect blend of muscle and sophistication, which never fails to get that one final look of gratification over my shoulder when I put it to bed for the night. It constantly draws the eyes of envy and although many other manufacturers have attempted to emulate her with fine examples of their own, there is no doubt in my mind that some day she will only be surpassed in her all encompasing splendor by another BMW of her genre.
