“A bucket of cold water to the face”

★★★★☆

written by on 22/03/2018

Reading the guide is like a bucket of cold water to the face. It calls a spade a bloody great shovel. The language is blunt, uncompromising and funny. This description of a certain Landrover Freelander engine: "designed by Satan, assembled by monkeys". But it gets to the truth of what is being offered wrapped in a slick package at a price that we think we can just about afford. More than once I have wondered about buying a vehicle, bought a review,(they don't write books anymore, that stopped in 2010) and found it was built with a generous serving of bad and stupid included. In my opinion, worth a look.

“A very useful item”

This fantastic piece of literature as opposed to the crass and irresponsible writing in the mainstream media on vehicles; is a must have for anyone considering buying a transport with 4 wheels. It will point out which models are bad and those that are good. Be warned, it pulls no punches and the motor industry and its reviewers and sundry hangers on do not like it. They are paid for what they do and most of them do not own cars as they are provided with them gratis by car companies on a weekly basis for review in the papers. If you want to know what is really a sham then read the Dog and Lemon Guide.

“AS A MECHANIC ...”

★★★★★

written by on 03/12/2012

The D&L could have been written as my life story given I have owned a car servicing business for 38 years. Perhaps that's why we drive Toyotas. For those with discretionary spending ability, buy what you like and if it is European you will help bolster the wallets of we mechanics. We were all slowly going broke due to the reliability and quality of Japanese cars, now also beginning to include some of the larger companies from the third world as they grow, so the renewed push into Oz of the euro cars has been a gold mine. I find the D&L a valuable reference and a number of our customers have used it to win claims with car dealers over "what goes wrong" issues. But I do miss the paper copy!

“Don't enter the car yard without it! ”

★★★★★

I have used the Dog and Lemon guide for years when buying cars or going to the mechanics. I print off the reviews so the car dealers know that I have done my research! I also enjoy reading the car sections which gives you the history of each make/brand - toyota, mercedes etc. It is a good read online. There is nothing else like the Dog and Lemon Guide out there and it is well written. I think it is shame that it doesn't publish a print edition anymore because it is a good Christmas present to give your Uncle and Grandfather, but they are saving some trees so that is good, and all the content is on the website - and a lot of it is free. I have bought three cars from reading the guide, and all have run really well with minimal bills and upkeep. This guide could save you thousands of dollars and heart ache.

“Says it like it is”

Petrolheads hate the Dog & Lemon Guide because the Dog & Lemon Guide tells the truth. That guy who writes it is a mechanic by trade and publishes all the ugly stuff that you never read about in shiny car mags. My friends that have bought the cars that the Dog & Lemon Guide recommends have all had a good run. Several of my friends ignored the advice in The Dog & Lemon Guide, and have regretted it since. Truth hurts and people who tell the truth aren't very popular, but it's still true.

“Complete nonsense”

★☆☆☆☆

written by TheCarGuy on 27/08/2012

Clive Matthew-Wilson dosn't have the faintest clue about vehicles and just resorts to rubbishing everything as a safe option in place of actual knowledge. Sadly, those whom this book is aimed at are not going to be automotively savy enough to realise that the information in this book is just misleading rubbish. I hate to think how many people have been mislead by this snake oil salesman when making a very expensive buying decision. Its time the motor industry got together and exposed this nonsense for what it is.

“The online version is a ripoff”

★☆☆☆☆

written by yaddayadda on 28/01/2012

I really appreciate the Dog and Lemon for the impartial, albeit often over the top and brutal, reviews of vehicles. Taken with a grain of salt its an excellent source of info. What i do have a serious problem with is the online version. Gone are the days of sitting on the toilet having a quick flick through. Online is the only option and reviews are purchased individually or in packs. The price is nothing short of extortionate and the service you receive is terrible. From dogandlemon.com site: "Most folks want to compare a few cars, so we've added discounts if you buy several reviews at once. 3 reviews for $10, 8 reviews for $20, 15 reviews for $30" Ouch! There was apparently 1800 reviews in the printed version or something like that. So given that each listing is now worth about $2/review (if purchased in a discount pack of $30 for 15 reviews) the book would not be worth about $3600! REALLY?! So what do we get for this massive price increase? Essentially what you are purchasing is a scanned version of their printed copy. It is a catalogue and nothing more. For this price in this day i would expect to be able to run customisable searches for vehicles in their extensive vehicle database eg I'm looking for a manual diesel van. I want to be able to access ranked comparisons of vehicles according to such important purchase considerations such as safety, reliability oh whatever else tickles my fancy. I can't even do a simple search for "Van". I have to already know the van model for each manufacturer in order to even be able to consider purchasing a review. How lame is that?! Come on fellas. Get out to the 90's. Step on up. Until the Dog and Lemon face reality and do a complete overhaul of their service i would consider this nothing short of a complete rip off.

“never bought this but have thumbed it through many...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 29/04/2010

never bought this but have thumbed it through many times in newsagents. It rubbishes just about everything and the authors seem to have a particular hatred for anything European. I accept that perhaps much of what is in it is true, but by and large it seems to me that it's just misleading, in that it basically tells you that just about any car you buy is going to give you trouble. Well, I've owned an Alfa (which was reliable, not so much as a Toyota, but then the Alfa was 3,000 times as much fun to drive as a bloody Toyota) and a Peugeot (my current car and has been tremendously reliable, and was excellent value for money), but if I believed this publication I would've avoided both of these models 'like the plague'. If the authors were actually fair-minded and based their statements on actual evidence, the publication would be vastly more useful. If I were to be similarly cynical to the authors of this thing, I'd say that basically they're just out to make bucks by trying to claim to be the only ones telling the no-holds-barred truth, when in fact their giving a pasting to many perfectly good cars for the sake of lining their own pockets.

The Dog and Lemon Guide is brilliantly written and easy to understand even to a layman. Also told me alot about energy and energy usage in the world. Then there is the review section a must for all car buyers both new and used.

“The Dog and Lemon Guide really gives you the info on...”

★★★★★

written by DuncanJR on 24/04/2008

The Dog and Lemon Guide really gives you the info on which cars are worth buying and how much to pay for them. How safe they are, how reliable, how to check if they have problems and what problems to check for. I would estimate that the Dog & Lemon Guide has saved me around $1500 car purchases and repairs and I only buy very cheap economical cars. For someone that buys new and/or expensive models this figure would be very much higher.I think I got my $25 worth. This website is aimed at people who see cars merely as a form of transportation and want them to be as cheap and trouble free as possible.
