I ' ve found the big Yamaha Super Tenere a joy to ride and work on, This is my fourth Yamaha so maybe I've just become used to the bad points that bikes from this era have, But at the price they can be had for I definitely wouldn ' t look past this one as a RTW tourer. If you ' re willing to put a bit of time and effort into sorting this big beast out then in my opinion I reckon it would pay off ten fold in terms of it being a keeper. Its retro looks get it noticed everywhere it goes and I ' ve had people pull me over in the street to find out more. It handles really well on road for a big heavy trallie and so far has been very comfy on 200 mile + Sunday blasts. I ' m only 5'7 and at first was put off by the high seat height, Once I'd had an hour or two on the bike I found it easy enough to ride on decent surfaces, I ' ve also ridden it off road a lot recently and found it no biggie, I just have to be on guard a lot more as it is a big heavy bike at 240 kilo's fully fueled it can be a pig to pick up when out riding alone. So far the engines been bullet proof, I ' ve also found it easy enough to work on. I ' ve added pannier's and engine crash bars and a head light guard, All can still be had cheaply enough through some German websites (From what I've read they have a big following over there). Apart from some reports on the web of owner's frames breaking (Around the top engine mounts) I reckon this bike with a little time and money would make an ideal long range tourer. They can be had very cheaply now a days in comparison to the Africa twin, (You can spend the extra dosh on the frame and crash bars etc) and they still look the part in terms of the adventure based market. High fuel consumption has been reported in a few cases, I found out replacing the emulsion tubes helped with this considerably (The left emulsion tube inner resembled a rugby ball) and at £40 for the two it's a cheap enough fix, The earlier model's suffered from bad VR/REC. I believe Yamaha tackled this problem on the bikes after 94?. It's high seat height and large proportion gives good road presence and I was using it for commuting and found it easy enough to filter (With out pannier's on) for a large lump it handles very well and is fast enough for keeping up with the plastic brigade on the twisty stuff (Depending on your tyre choice of course) For a bike that can be had for less than a grand Id say it had appeal in many forms, I ' ve used it for commuting (very comfy) Sunday blasts (Keeps up with sports bikes on the bendy stuff) and off roading (Heavy and you defo have to have your wits about you) It's a capable enough all rounder, And with the money you save on the initial purchase you could really turn this bike into what it was meant to be when first released. For me it ' s a keeper and one I don ' t mind spending the odd couple of hundred quid on to keep it that way.
