“Utter rubbish”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/01/2013

Ok so we bought this car because we thought it would be easy to transport a disabled person in a wheelchair. On first impressions it looked great no rust (mainly the bodywork is plastic). Dashboard all worked which is rare for the digital dash and started and sounded great. That was until after 3 weeks when things started to go wrong, misfire caused by bad plugs, not a problem usually but the rear 2 plugs on this beast are inaccessible and they were the ones causing problems. Even the garage didn't want to know. Cam belt. Only replaced by main dealer at around £2000 as the engine has to come out. Eventually after 3 months of ownership the fuel tank split so we decided enough is enough. Although we owned this thing for 3 months I think it only spent 2weeks on the road. Never EVER will I buy a Renault again. These cars are only to be bought if you have a very very big wallet.

“i bought the grand espace 3.5 v6 privillage a few...”

i bought the grand espace 3.5 v6 privillage a few months ago now and have loved every minute of driving it, so much so that i hardley use my mercedes e270 cdi 2005 model
its so smooth and powerful
people go on about the fuel consumtion and reliablity etc which in my experice is total rubbish
if you buy a nice one that has not been abused and regulary serviced it will be fine
the engine is a nissan 350z unit detuned to 245bhp which i can assure is more than enough
the engine is also chain driven so engine out jobs for cam belts etc
the tank fills up on £72 optimax @ £1.09/litre and gives me 400miles on a run
i have covered just over 5000 miles in my short ownership so far and it is by far the people shifter i have owned
i have had the seat alhambra 1.8 20v turbo, vw sharan 1.9 tdi, toyota previa 2.4, toyota estima 2.2 TD, citroen synergie, grand espace 2.2 dci and a zafira 1.8
none of these even come close to the espace iv 3.5 v6

I found this review very helpful because...it was honest and focused on the things that mattered! (to me at least!)

“Bought the Renault Grand Espace with 50,000 miles and...”

★★★★☆

written by on 07/02/2008

Bought the Renault Grand Espace with 50,000 miles and it has been reliable for the last 25,000 miles I put on it. Driving is a reasonable experience and the engine is pretty powerful so whilst it isn't sporty it certainly isn't sluggish.
I've just had the cambelt service (70,000 mile job) and it cost in all £2,000 so beware. Had the coil packs replaced not so long before that service which was also quite expensive.
Main every day complaint is about the rattles - everything rattles a bit and the trim isn't terribly well fixed. Oh and stuff always falls out when you open the rear doors.
Fuel consumption is predictably bad at about 24mpg; can be up to 28 on a run but comes down quickly. Though if you consider you get Range Rover type driving position, better than Range Rover performance for less fuel consumption it doesn't seem quite so bad (OK that's a bit weak perhaps!).
Automatic gearbox is OK but I think would be better as 5 speed.
All in all it does the people carrier thing well, has reasonable performance and has been reasonably reliable. And I think it looks pretty good too.
