Easy to use, many functions, fast, and an exceptional value. Unlike other cameras I've had, this has never given me problems. I have more expensive cameras but I love the Nikon D300. My son is entering the picture and he already wants to take me!

Yeah,Nikon D300 is pretty good.It came into the market in August 2007.It has came into the market quite sometime. The price is reasonable.Just now I find a very special one on busytrade.com.To my surprise the brand is Nokia,I don't know if this camera of this brand is good or not.

Does everything it says it will, and then some. Is somewhat pricey and bulky to use for someone who needs a camera seldomly but when you use this, photos turn out perfectly. Best to learn how to use all the features and also on how totaled great photo with an SLR. Look online for great deals or buy from your local camera store if they offer free lessons with your purchase.

Bought the Nikon D300 as an ex demo' with only 320 shutter operation /shots. The Pros'... Nikon Build quality. Pro level spec.Definately better than lower models great in low light ,Replaced by the much hyped D300s (not worth the extra really, basically for a video fearure)get a 300 ..top - top camera 11/10 The Cons...Although not cheap it is a superb camera for the Money.Stunning. Not a pocket camera by any means Best camera I've have picked up since the legendary FE2 or the FA series 30 years ago. Had a D80,which is now relagated to a back up ..happy days! Want another 300 really. :-/ No surprise that only Canon remain as a real competitor, the rest have been blown away ! Phil-Am.Photographer

The best APS-C DSLR on the market at the moment, by a long way. I use it at weddings, for portraits, landscapes,.... just a fabulous all-rounder. Build quality is excellent and performance reliable. Picture quality is astonishing for a small sensor camera. I love it.

Before buying any camera I would advise people to go to a real dealers and actually try holding the camera and using it for a few minutes with the lenses you want to use. I say this because I went to a dealers after reading many reviews to buy the Nikon D90 and ended up with the D300, simply because paired with the lens I most wanted (the 105mm Macro) the D300 fitted my hands perfectly and the D90 didn't. This is a heavy camera but one where you feel the engineering quality, after a while you can concentrate on the picture / viewfinder and know the controls are where you want them. The build quality is superb, I have dropped it (once, but from height!) taken over 6000 pictures and the thing looks like new. The viewfinder is excellent, another factor which led me to pick it over the D90. The lens selection is also very good, I love the 105 macro, the 18-200 zoom is a use all day lens and I have recently bought the excellent 11-16mm Tokina to play with wide angle.

Bought this D300 as a backup to a Nikon D700 (well you never can tell), performs just as well and sometimes forget which is which!
Went for a 300 over another 700 (besides cost) was for the smaller sensor giving a 1.5x extra zoom. Ok ISO not quite as good but nice to have the extra reach with a 300mm!

Where in the world did you get your data for rating image quality @ 6/10. What planet are you on. This is the best camera I've handled since my Canon F1! The Nikon D300 Rocks in my opinion! Low light sensitivity, Weight, Controls design, Built-in intervalometer, Auto ISO/w selectable min shutter speeds, mega color sensitivity profiles, 3" 920000 dots screen, High contrast auto adjustment, auto ev correction/bracketing, 8fps motor drive, 14 bit raw capture option, built-in GPS ability w/your GPS device, Built-in flash command mode.

If you're going to shell out 1,300 quid on a camera, chances are you'll be at least a semi-professional, if not a pro. And so you'll be using Adobe Photoshop and running the camera in RAW mode, rather than cheap and cheerful jpg mode (and hey, if all you want are jpegs then this may be your dream camera).
It's a great pity then that Nikon forgot to ask Adobe to release a RAW plugin for this camera before they released the kit. Oh, Adobe have done a plug-in for the LATEST version of Photoshop, but it may come as a surprise to Nikon that when I traded in my D200 for a D300 I wasn't expecting to have to buy a complete photo editing suite and a new computer to make it run. I would be happy to upgrade to the latest Photoshop, if only I could make it run on my 18 month old computer. This, by the way, I suspect has less to do with computing power and more to do with Adobe?s well documented broken security features.
The current net wisdom is to throw away the advantages of shooting in raw and convert the files to DNG format, but Adobe's DNG plug in is not a richly featured as the RAW plugin. No point in shooting RAW if you can?t take advantage of it.
You may think that this is an Adobe problem, but Adobe didn't change the RAW format - Nikon did. Backward compatibility is one of the oldest rules in the world. Nikon did good to introduce better technology, but they should have thought out the delivery.
So, if like me you expect to be able to USE the pictures that you take with your camera then don?t buy a D300 unless you also a) Buy a very new computer and b) Install the latest version of Adobe Photoshop and spend a few weeks making their anti-piracy software work and c) spend a grand or so on a training course because the new Photoshop is so unlike the old one.
If however, you want to impress your friends with a very cool paperweight or some of the world's most expensive jpegs, then this is the camera for you.

Can't help disagreeing. The RAW issue you mention IS an Adobe issue. Backward compatibility is fine and Nikon have taken that to extremes with the lens mount (how many times have Canon changed the lens mount? Or Pentax? Or Olympus).
The RAW file changes are necessary to introduce additional features. Its unreasonable to expect that you will be able to use old software to manipulate new RAW files. Its like expecting an old printer or scanner driver to work with your new printer or scanner.
Perhaps it isn't Nikon you should be criticising but Adobe for not releasing an updated ACR download quickly enough?

Thought this was a review of the D300 not Adobe!
Not a fan of Adobe software - ok maybe it ' s the most use unfriendly software ever - but that ' s not really the point of the review! Wrting in June 2009 using Photoshop CS3, RAW is absolutely fine!

I disagree with this review because...The fault is with Adobe and not Nikon. This is a semi-pro camera and it should be expected that anyone shooting in raw should keep their software reasonably up to date.

I'm interested in the Camera not issues with Ver 5.x PS! . . . I use a Mac so all the Windows winging is irrelevant to me. Get a Mac, take pictures, do your stuff and take more pictures :)

Mmmm, some rather bizarre comments Jim. Of course it's an all rounder, it's only a body, it's the lens that determines what you use it for. And to say it's the best APS-C DSLR on the market by a long way presumes that you've used the others. Have you? Regardless, I'm glad you're happy with it.
