Advent 8117

I have had my Advent laptop for almost 2 years now (this review with probably put the mockers on it now) I would have given it 5 stars across the board but like everyone else's review the Battery lets it down. I can with hand on heart say it is the best laptop I have had. (touch wood) I have had no problems with it at all apart from the battery. I dont know why they bothered putting one in it ...... its totallu useless. but apart from that a brill laptop if you dont want to use it on battery power.

I've had this laptop for just over 2 years now and it was a fairly good purchase. The inital hard drive size was very good, although i did upgrade mine to a 200GB hard drive. The screen is a great size and very good for watching movies and general tasks. The battery just recently gave up on me, it no longer seems to charge but works fine when pluged into the mains. With a laptop of his size i rarely had it unplugged from the mains anyway, its more of a minor inconvenience. The adapter still works fine though, i've not had the problem that some other people have been having. The only other negative part about this laptop i can think of is my ethernet port. I've just finished my first year at uni and the halls i was living in had wired internet access. My latop was working fine for the first 4 months but for some reason started giving me a blue screen then crashig. This only happened when i had the ethernet port connected to use the internet, this was very annoying as it basically ment i couldnt use the internet for my remaining time at uni.

Overall i would give the Advent 8117 a thumbs up, it has only a few negative parts but for the price it was a good buy.

The only two problems:

1) the battrey on the advent 8117 is extremely short lived. I changed it for a more powerful

2) As everyone knows Vista is a horrible program. I changed it for XL professional at a very great cost, but I smile now.

The Advent 8117 battery life just long enough to carry the thing from one room to another. I guess I should have removed the battery as leaving it attached but plugged into the mains kills the battery. The charger went pear shapped, near the plug, I stripped the cable and reattached it and it worked again for a while until I got a p.c maintenance guy to fix the end of the lead properly. Now the screen is shot, looks like a bad connection as if I waggle the screen / lid it will sharpen up and be useable but I guess its going to get worse and eventually render it unuseable. I still think it was good as long as the screen problem isnt the end of its life.

Ive had the ADVENT 8117 for 2 and a half years now, its got an awful battery life but everything else is great and its well worth putting up with.

Got one complaint tho, It keeps cooking the hardrive.

Im onto my third now, Ive updated the ram to 2G and just changed OS to ubuntu9.4.

But its pointless coz soon ill have to get a new hardrive coz the internal enviroment dosnt cool that fast and the hardrive gets damaged due to the heat.

That means starting all over again, not good if u use your computer for storing very important information.

I suggest if u buy this be aware of the problem and keep the fan running with the external fan controll button, this will not fix the problem but it makes it a hell of alot less regular.

As for solving the problem, ive yet to find a solution.

I've had my Advent 8117 machine for almost 2 years now and haven't had any major problems as such, but a common problem after reading the other reviews is the shortness of the battery life and the fact that the charger cable has stopped working properly less than a year after buying the machine....same place, the thin part just beside the jack. Very poor quality concerning the charger and battery life (it's not charging at all now, just powered by the mains at the moment) but overall it's a great machine.

I've had my Advent 8117 laptop for now 20 months and only had to have it repaired once due to getting an infection on it via the internet. I have to say thought I really do look after it and I guess thats why I haven't had alot of problems with it. My charger wire has just broken the plastic rime on where the tip goes into the laptop but have been told that its one of the best seen in its condition and the time I've had it. I use the laptop for everything and I'm on it everyday. Overall I feel its a good laptop and great for uni students who want the whole package. I love my advent, its amazing, excellent graphics good for watching dvds, listening to music and doing my uni work on it. Can be a little slow sometimes in start up and connecting to the internet but overall its been really good.

I'v had this Advent 8117 model for over a year now, its really brilliant, never had any problems with it. Battery life could have been better but other than that everything is perfect. Nice widescreen lcd ideal for watching dvd's. Storage is 120GB with is enough for most, if you need more just buy an external hard drive. Memory is 1gb, would have been better if it was double.Would I recommend it, absolutely yes, 09/10 all the way.

Laptop adapter broke less than a year later so I just replaced it... But I later found the 20V adapter doesn't seem to charge my laptop battery but a 19V adapter will.... Also the CD drive stopped working so I went to get it checked out and had to buy another one to replace it. But during the process found that my CD drive was not the one that was originally meant to go with my laptop plus looked to be second hand.Also while typing the cursors tends to jump around misplacing words and doing whatever it wants to.
