“I have only seen part one of the Bringing Up Baby...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 23/02/2009

I have only seen part one of the Bringing Up Baby series so far and was really disturbed by Claire Verity's methods. I believe that when you choose to have a baby you must also accept that your life will change forever. Therefore you need to arrive at a compromise between you and your baby's needs. Claire's idea about allowing the baby to cry for hours on end I find very disturbing. My experience as a mother of two boys has allowed me to arrive at this conclusion, babies cry for three reasons: 1. They are hungry. 2. They are experiencing some sort of discomfort ( a pain ). 3. They just want to be comforted ( cuddled and listen to a familiar voice ). My two babies both suffered from colic for roughly the first three months of their lives and as a result they needed to be held in an upright position for most of the day or until the wind was released. If I was to follow Claire's fool proof method I don't know what would have become of my babies. Fortunately they have grown into well adjusted teenagers. I wonder if Claire Verity's strict method would affect the behaviour of these children in a negative way when they are older. I truly believe that babies need as much cuddling and kissing as possible to ensure that they have a chance at becoming well adjusted adults. I have never believed in the idea that newborn babies cry in order to manipulate their mother into picking them up. Yes, they cry for attention but this is a survival mechanism to allow them to feel close to their mother, father or anyone who will provide them with the comfort they need. Not want but need. I don't think Claire Verity really understands babies in this particular way. I followed the 60's method and found it worked very well for my family. There are also many elements of the 70's method that I fully agree with and did use with my babies.
