Do Not Use

I changed my scooter 2 weeks before my policy was due for renewal. I took out a new policy for my new scooter with a different insurance company. When I contacted H & R to ask for my no claims certificate they said they would have to cancel my existing policy and charge me £40. I said I didn't want to cancel my policy - could they leave it to run ? (I had sold my old scooter so I wouldn't be claiming anything. They said no they had to cancel the policy. They charged me £10 in the end as a good will gesture. The actual policy for the year was £60.00 third party only. This also meant that I couldn't claim a years no claims as my policy had only run for 50 weeks. I thought the staff were very unreasonable and the person I spoke to was very condescending. I would never use them again.

I wish I had read the reviews on this company before I used them.

Motorbike Insurance - Downhill Lately

I've been insured with this company before without issue - experiencing helpful and friendly service. But the latest policy has gone bad and the service has been sub-par. Apparently I gave a wrong date for a recent claim and H&R were quick to point out this was solely my fault and responsibility and therefore there would be an extra £17 premium to pay - not much admittedly and I would have most likely paid, given my mistake. But on top of that I would be required to complete and sign a "non-dicsclosure" form explaining my reasons for supplying inaccurate information. The email communication throughout this was unhelpful and really impersonal - with no effort to come or go on this small error. Eventually I decided to cancel as I was getting concerned that a claim would be equally poorly handled. I was was told that would cost me £77 - 6 days into the policy.

This situation could have been handled with some diplomacy, the small error corrected without fuss and the policy would have continued. Instead the customer service was hands off, accusatory and generally would not encourage me to use this company again. I don't see why I should give my hard earned money to a company which treats me like I tried to deliberately lie to them.

Unhappy customer = no customer. What happened to your previous service?

Not even a stamp just an email ,that's ok but they have a web portal that you can do nothing with so you have to ring .

Car Insurance

I switched to H&R for my car insurance and was asked for copies of my driving licence and the counterpart. I sent everything off and they took my payment. After several days they emailed that my counterpart did not match my licence and they would not release my documents until I sent the right one. When I looked I realised that when I had renewed my licence 3 years earlier I must have thrown away the wrong counterpart. Easily done as they look the same and the only difference is a small number on it that I had never noticed nor the one on my licence. I have never been asked for these details before and wish I had never switched to them now. In spite of the counterparts being discontinued and obsolete in three weeks time they still insisted on having it. This resulted in me having to buy a complete new licence from the DVLA adding a cost of £20 to the insurance fee. Therefore I have gained nothing from switching, and as a pensioner having to watch my spending is not satisfactory. They also put that I had passed my test in 1975 when I actually passed for a car in 1968 and a motorcycle in 1960. I certainly won't be insuring with them again for next year.

Hassle

I admit that I normally purchase insurance direct on the insurance company web site and don't use brokers so the hassle in setting up may not be that abnormal.

After setting up the policy I had to sent both prove of no claims and a copy of my driving licence which is annoying especially when you think you have completed your purchase on the web and given all the information they require at the time.

The first I new about it was a letter saying the policy is going to be cancelled with an admin cost if the documents are not supplied in seven days.

If there is anything missed on the the proposal even if it doesn't change the policy cost a £30 admin is charged ( exact dates etc.) If all the info is correct to there standards you may be ok otherwise it won't be a cheap policy and don't plan to move otherwise additional admin fees will be applied.

Absolutely Shocking!

When I got a quote h&r were the best to go with but after three months I bought a new bike so obviously I rang to change my bike, to my shock when I spoke to them my insurance went up by just over £400! I asked why and they said its because of the bike? What a load of rubbish! Its a honda 125, not batmans motorbike!!! So as you can guess I told them I am going to cancell and they came up with some rubbish that I owed them money?

I told them to get stuffed as there is nothing in the small print telling me I have to pay anymore than a one off payment of£30. I printed off all the reviews and told them I will seek further advice. Funnily after alot of shouting and telling them to do one I ended up only have to pay the cancellation fee.

DO NOT USE H&R! You have been warned

Very Good Insurer

Have been with H&R for 2 years now and will be renewing in March hopefully

1st year went without a hitch. Signed up, paid the money, had a few issues with forms and sending things back, but it wasn't what I would consider a large or frustrating issue. It was resolved quickly, was trivial, and no additional charges were made.

2nd year I had a claim to experience. I was rear ended and pushed into oncoming traffic. The 3rd party admitted liability completely, so, not much detective work or fighting was needed on H&R's part.

They logged the claim successfully and went smoothly. It was the insurance company itself with my bike and valuation that caused me no end of trouble.

I phoned, emailed, and sent a letter, explaining I would be in Tenerife on holiday and to EMAIL me the price my bike was worth. Nothing for 2 weeks. I jet back home and find 4 letters saying the price (completely unreasonable) and that I had to reply soon or it would be forfeited. They had a stern email and phonecall with me copying all the evidence of me saying to EMAIL me because letters would be useless while I am on another continent.

This was not H&R though, but equtity red star I believe as the company itself.

However H&R use ERS so....

2nd year I found a better price and they lowered it to match, with no fuss at all.

My experience hasn't been perfect, but comparing it to some of the horror stories, they're pretty damn good.

Also for those reading this thinking "every insurance company seems terrible" please remember, these companies have tens of thousands of customers, maybe even hundreds of thousands. So 20-30 bad reviews means nothing, as EVERY company will have some negative feedback.

Also remember, what will make you review a company more, a bad experience or a good experience?

Most reviews are negative because anger has incensed them to do everything in their power to show them up. When one recieves a great service, they just smile and use their bike and rarely think to support that company.

I transferred to H&R after being with Lexham for a year. Lexham were TERRIBLE.

Awful Company

Bought a policy through Gocompare.com and after paying for the policy I get a letter on he 15th day saying that they need all this extra info (name and contact details of employer, any convictions or accidents in the last 5 years which I had already disclosed, my full name.... Also disclosed..... What I'll be using the bike for.... Also disclosed already.... How long I'd been riding ... Already disclosed, pretty much my whole policy again along with what my favourite colour is and how I like my eggs cooked in the mornings etc) and I have 7 days to return it or they are cancelling my policy....at a cost of course... What a hassle!! I ring to cancel and I'm now outside of 14 days so am subject to £100 of cancellation fees!? Also they can't cancel until they've had written confirmation so don't expect it to be done instantly. Terrible experience.

Excellent Customer Service

I've been with them for a couple of years now, never an issue. Every time I call them I get someone in the UK who tells me exactly what I want to know. I've changed bikes on my policy with no issue.

Costs have been low for me also.

Highly recommended.

Cheap For Fast Bikes

I myself own a Kawasaki 250r and was previously with another insurer. I had initially wished to stay with said insurer but the quote I had was ridiculous. I found the quote with this company to be very reasonable (around the £60 mark) for TPFT after 1 month of riding and £72 for comprehensive. They are very prompt. The only issue I have with them which stops them getting five stars is how they like everything done on paper - even cancellations.

Overall they are worth a shot if you are looking for a company that won't mess you around (as far as I can tell) but they do have smaller 'bolt-on' style costs which you can purchase.
