The Dansai 1010 is a good All Rounder provideing if you got the firmware and are able to play VCD/SVCD otherwise there ain't much point owning a DVD Player :) Well here is the good news for all you 1010 Owners with out the firmware its Available here on my webspace http://www.angelfire.com/weird/beneyre/1010upgrade.zip :) copy that link to your web browser and it will download you will need Nero to make the image onto CD, where the instructions are on the cd. read the cd in your pc drive before attempting to upgrade your 1010 so you can print these :)

Had this player for 8 days and thought it was great, but then it failed to play any discs at all and made a sound as if it was spinning up slightly, and then giving up. There were none left when I took it back to Tesco. The Customer Services bod said they had had loads returned and had 3 out the back broken at the moment. She said she "would not buy one after working here!" Good player if it keeps working, but there's no point saving yourself £20 on a cheap player only to have it break down IMO.

A superb buy from Tesco for £69.99 (Baldock).I phoned Tesco helpline for the update CD - they have stopped doing this, but agreed to reorder one for me for VCD but it would be 3 weeks (actually took one week). In the event, I decided to download the update and it literally was a case of inserting the newly burnt CD into the machine, wait for 3 minutes, switch off then on and - Finito! VCD enabled automatically and when you access the menu there is every Region code and option to turn off macrovision. Have noticed that the remote needs to point directly at the player to work ... but what a superb machine !!

<br>burn vcd with my Nero and play them on my dvd
<br>i manage to burn 100 photos with menu.
<br>can anyone tell me how to get more photos on the vcd. the nero just gives me a menu for 100

You haven't read the sections above!
<br>
<br>The Dansai 1010 WON'T play VCD from the box. It needs reflashing.
<br>
<br>Read my two points above - you need to either contact Tesco for the CD to reflash the player, OR visit the web site I listed above to get the disk privately. Only then will it play VCD's beautifully.

I dont understand this machine, it says it plays vcd's but when i put one in it wont accept it....please please can someone please tell me how to play them.....

As I said I phoned the Tesco Helpline for my update CD (0845 6012549) but they are wary over issuing it out - probably in case it causes legal issues with macrovision etc.
<br>
<br>They told me they issue it out only if the box states VCD (early ones did) but they will check with the serial number.
<br>
<br>Alternatively you can go to http://www.dansai.freehosting.net/custom2.html
<br>who can supply it and more details for a fiver.

The Dansai 1010 DVD player is very very good value for money, mine play everything, it took me 10 seconds to make it multi region.
written by xypert. on 05/11/2002
After upgrading the firmware with the CDROM, the player proved to be very versatile. It played all media, without layer jumping or freezing. There is a capability after upgrading of being able to turn off CSS and MACROVISION, although since the point of having a DVD player is the quality and facility available from the disc menu, then this is not as important as being able to use multiregion playability.

I bought a Dansai 1010 DVD player in Milton Keynes Tesco Extra last Friday (£79.99)
I performed the SET-UP (remote) and front panel STOP, FORWARD, REVIEW, PREV, NEXT hack for multiregion. However I am still waiting for the VCD upgrade disk to arrive from Tesco.
In the meanwhile, I HAVE received my copy of R1. Disney's Beauty & the Beast from future rent (IN TWO DAYS!!).
I noticed in the opening sequence a staggering effect as the camera zoom thought the forest into the castle. Had to manually adjust from HI-RESOLUTION to NO-FLICKER to overcome problem. Drawing became more sketchy though. The Dansai's PAL option is enough to overcome NTSC playback bias; a pink hue and a slightly stretchy picture (a result of c700 lines on NTSC v c500 in PAL).
Ideally I would like a remote hackable multiregion DVD player with SCART, S-video output, two RCA, L and R sound outputs to connect to amp. and telly and macrovision free. I know the Phillips 723 has double RCA outputs but is not macro free. Anybody know of any others??

The Dansai 1010 is a great value DVD player. Happy at only £85.
written by winkease. on 07/09/2002
I bought this Dansai 1010 DVD player today for £85 after reading all the reviews. was a little bit worried that i would not be able to turn off the macrovision with it being the latest model but no such problem. the unit does not have the ability to play svcd, vcd when initially bought so i downloaded the upgrade and updated firmware (quite simple), from that point it is possible (using remote hack)to multi region and disable macrovision.
bought this unit cos my samsung dvd709 will not play anything other than original discs. This, on the other hand, plays anything you put in it. Even the cheapest dvdr, cdr, cdrw - i have not found anything that it will not play.
Another great plus point is that it will play any mpeg file i burn to disc without even having to burn it in a vcd format (though no fast forward or rewind unless burnt as a proper vcd).
The unit itself is faultless in operation, though i have my worries on how robust it will be over the years. But who cares at that price. I think you'll find it hard to match its functions in any other model whatever the price it really is the dogs danglys.....buy...buy ...buy

Where did you get this DVD, since the unit I have recently bought with version 1134 firmware does not seem to allow VCDs or Macrovision access?

hi can you help me i need the hack to make my dvd player play vcds
written by Chork. on 05/09/2002
I've tried 2 Dansai 1010 DVD players now and neither has correctly output the S/PDIF audio correctly.
Wiring and setup of the rest of the system is OK because my Wharfedale is fine.
A firmware update CD for the Dansai is available free by calling the Tesco helpdesk number - 2 weeks delivery and mine hasn't arrived yet, so I don't know if this will solve the SPDIF problem or not.

Mail me at [email protected] for a copy of the "flash upgrade disk" along with instructions :)
Written on: 18/11/2002
Sorry people but due to the high demand for the upgrade disk I can no longer supply it.
Good luck in your search. suggest a filesharing proggy such as "Kazaa lite" or "Winmx"
or post a request and maybe someone that I have supplied would be kind enough to pass it on.
enjoy :)

The dansai 1010 is delivered/Sold as a straightforward 'only do what we want it to do machine'. Upgrade using the following
Rom upgrade - go to this address : Http://homepage.ntlworld.com/camol121/1010upgrade.zip
you'll need Nero to burn the CD - READ the INSTRUCTIONS !!!
This gives you VCD + SVCD
You may need to do the above before the hacks below work.
To deregionalise - Put machine in STOP mode
Press SETUP on the remote - you see normal options
On FRONT panel press STOP - FWD - PREV - NEXT
This is now hidden setup page - move to Region ID and change to whatever.
Move down to Macrovision and switch from AUTO to OFF.
VOILA!!
This worked with 1010 purchased this weekend (24/08/02)
Firmware - V25J01134.
Even at the normal store price of £85 these are still probably worth a punt.
Written on: 28/08/2002
My firmware no. is V25j01134.
<br><br>In STOP mode:
<br><br>Press SETUP on the remote, and press STOP FWD PREV NEXT (on the remote).
<br><br>You will enter the Factory Page, change Region ID to bypass, there is no option to disable MACROVISION.

Tried to be a cheapskate and bought one of these Dansai 1010 DVD players. Second day of using it went dead. Took it back Tesco gave me another. 3 months Later the Second one has gone dead , with my DVD inside - and I cant find the reciept.....
written by Steevee. on 18/08/2002
This smart little Dansai 1010 DVD player will actually play VideoCD's, but you have to extract the video data from the original VCD and save it to CD-R/CD-RW in ISO9660/Joliet format using your CD-Burning program.
To see what firmware version your player is using and change region codes, do the following :
In STOP mode:
Press SETUP on the remote, on the front panel press STOP FWD PREV NEXT.
You will enter the Factory Page, change Region ID to bypass, there is no option to disable MACROVISION.
Here are the firmware versions I know of so far:
V25J01121.....(Macrovision auto disabled)
V25J01122.....(No option do disable Mac)
V25J01134.....(No option to disable Mac)...my firmware.
You can't get blood out of a stone, or can you?

bought my Dansai 1010 DVD player 28/7/02. Box says it plays everything (but doesn't play vcds). Called Tesco helpline, got them to post out disc, followed instructions and now plays all discs.
Can also be changed to all region.

I bought my Dansai 1010 DVD player a couple of weeks ago and today recieved a VCD firmware update from Tesco's support. Once again the 1010 seems to be a great budget machine which plays everything.

Bought the Dansai 1010 DVD player as it was a hit last time Tescos sold it - dismayed to find that Tesco's has taken the VCD feature off - this would have been a good buy otherwise!
written by James. on 06/07/2002
I bought my Dansai 1010 DVD player from Tesco as the reviews were very good and I thought it played VCD's, but the new batch are not VCD compliant and so I took it back to Tesco for a refund.
written by thedriver. on 22/06/2002
The Dansai 1010 DVD player plays DVD's ok and for the cost of £85 from tesco, it's a cheap machine that can be made multi region in minutes.
But as I said in the bad points this model no longer plays vcd's and for that reason only I had to take this Dansai back to the store.
