“Quick, stress-free response to a problem”

★★★★☆

written by Ogle90 on 07/02/2015

I sold a car before moving abroad and thought (I still think but I could be wrong) that I notified SAGA. When automatic renewal happened (slow-ish mail forwarding from UK meant the "checking you want to renew" letter and new policy arrived together) and I queried it, they sorted it and refunded back to the date of sale in no time at all. I liked the quick response with a request for additional information followed by prompt action.

“Changed from Direct Line to Saga”

★★★★☆

written by on 07/07/2012

Changed from Direct Line due to their customer service, never updating customer records, failing to do what they had promised and charging for services which they then did not deliver (£9.56 to send a fax of new insurance policy to car dealer which they did not do). Plus the premium on the new car almost doubled, whereas with Saga it decreased. Pity, Direct Line used to be good, they seem to have forgotten how now. Saga on the other hand were polite and efficient, great price but with same deal as DL. Picked up on it being my birthday in a few days. Real pleasure to deal with someone where you go straight through to customer service without having to press buttons and run up telephone bills listening to options. So far so good Saga, keep it up!

I am currently with DL and thinking of changing to Saga (£123 cheaper), so this review was very interesting.

However, all the companies I have looked at have bad reviews (including Saga). Is there anybody out there 'legal, decent and honest'?!

In my experience it is not a widespread practice to automatically 'renew' your policy, by retaining your details from a one off payment, it is sharp practice by Saga and I would never take another policy out with them.

Thank you Mandl. I think DL tried to automatically renew my policy. It must be common practise within the industry these days to keep business ... you are renewed unless you cancel.

Every year I check my policy for this and other policies and go for what I consider to be the best deal around!

Just hope you want to renew with Saga next year as if you don't they'll carry on being efficient and take your money anyway (automatic renewal being a company policy) and be careful that your excess hasn't been cranked up, which is also a very helpful and efficient practice that they do without prior consultation which makes nonsense of a 'renewal'. Please do not be complacent about Saga, wait and see what you think of their customer service if you have an issue, it seems to change once you've paid!

I have just telephoned DL quoting the prices I have from other insurance companies, and the girl didn't try to persuade me to stay, of try to match the prices.

However, as I look at the various insurance companies reviews they all seem to have negative reports. Is there a insurance company that can be considered 'legal, decent and honest' ?!

Saga Car Insurance offer good value for money for the over 50's, I got this quote originally through Confused.com but have used them in the past. I check it out every year when my insurance is due.

Recently switched to Saga just before their association with the AA. Interestingly the AA would have been my second choice but cover not quite as required. Carried out very detailed checks before switching, best rates were all close and much less than I had been paying.

I had been with Churchill for many years, without a claim, and just by chance I had a letter from Saga car insurance to apply for a quote. It was a few quid cheaper with the same cover.

Never accept their first renewal quote, as I found that I could, and did get a major reduction by quoting other insurers offers. Also remember that no claims protection only really works when the entire claim is settled with full recovery of costs etc. Until then it is still an open claim (18 months).

It can take 14 days from receipt by Saga's post room to it getting to a claims handler, in which time you may receive requests to submit the very paper work which is sitting in their post room (even recorded delivery).

But all in all, Saga is a safe company, and their quotes are reasonably low for the inclusive offers.

Saga provide unlimited European use on their car insurance which is the main reason I use them. Has anyone any experience of them being difficult about cars parked at secure airport car parks abroad? I am in France and flying back to UK for a couple of weeks to see the kids, leaving the car at Toulouse airport. Have read the policy and it looks OK but the circumstances are unusual perhaps. Grateful for views.
