Overall, an excellent and very relaxing experience at Barony Castle in Peebles. The (international) staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a welcoming drink for us when we arrived. The room was comfortable and tidy, and tea and coffee could be made at any time at self-help machines throughout the building. The quality of drinks from these machines was very good, and there were nice touches such as pre-heated china mugs. Special diets could be discussed directly with the chef, who was very helpful. The building had recently been refurbished. There were extensive walks and activity areas in the grounds, with umbrellas readily available in racks. Some spectacular sights within the grounds, and on local walks along the Tweed river. Peebles is a delight for independent shopping, having won an award. National High Street brands are not in evidence, but many local art and craft workshops abounded. localism seemed the key theme. The swimming pool was not large, but very easy to access and not crowded. A well equipped Gym and a sauna were also available. We had to ask for our room to be done on the second day at 5 pm. The window latch was broken, meaning that only the upper part of the window opened. A glass of wine at the bar was more expensive than a bottle from an off-licence.
