“Cocker spaniel brings joy into our lives!”

★★★★★

written by Hancock104 on 05/06/2014

I was suffering from mild depression and my GP recommended a dog! I don't think for one moment he thought I would go ahead and buy a puppy. After convincing my husband that a dog would be good for the family, we got a beautiful black english show type cocker spaniel. Hard work at first, just like bringing a new baby home but it's a decision we never regret. She is lovely with people and other dogs and has added a new dimension to family life, getting us all off the sofa and into the fresh air. We all love her to bits and the GP was right. She has helped lift my depression and She makes a great running companion - I have only just taken this up, thanks to her. If you're looking for a very affectionate breed, you can't go wrong with a cocker spaniel.

“Had always been a cat lover - Until Nelson”

★★★★★

written by Akela65 on 01/06/2013

To cut a very long story short, I brought a 5 week old blind cocker spaniel home one day. It changed our lives for ever! Our three cats got used to the situation very quickly and he was not top dog where they were concerned. We had nelson for a glorious 7 years, my children were always referred to as number 1 son, number 2 son and Nelson was favourite son (the cats are all girls btw). We lost him to a siezure and it broke our hearts. We did the "never again" thing. We hadn't planned Nelson so thought we'd be able to go back to just having cats. It lasted 6 months before we admitted to each other we couldn't wait to get another cocker. We talked and not wanting to put too much pressure on any one puppy, we had too! A year later and our lives are back to living for our 9 month old dogs Bert & Earnie, they just bring the family together to play, walk or just watch them together. Would recommend a cocker to anyone, young or old.

“They're my children I never had”

★★★★★

written by Boggie46 on 29/05/2013

We have a black and tan part working and part show cocker girl. She's now 18 weeks old and I wouldn't be without her. Yes she has never ending energy and yes she is into everything. But boy I get so much love and company from her it's unreal. I am disabled and am at home all day until mu Husband gets home so now I have a little imp to look after. She will happily spend all day in the garden investigating and running round in circles. I've never laughed so much. We have fallen in love so much with this breed that we have now put a deposit on a blue roan show girl who is 6 weeks old. It will be mayhem I'm sure with two youngsters but I can honestly say that the good points outweigh the little bad points without a doubt. One thing to remember though is that they are very strong willed, and you have to be very firm with rules or they will try and dominate you. I couldn't imagine being without them now.

“My two best friends”

★★★★★

written by on 18/05/2013

We've two cocker spaniels, (one show, and one working) they bring love friendship and enjoyment 24/7. Freckle(chocolate and white show cocker) is 4years old and she is loyal and very happy and has bundles of energy which she looks using up whilst chasing a ball, going for long walks, investigating hedgerows and rabbit holes, swimming and playing with her step sister Ebony. Ebony is our 2 year old (black working cocker) She like Freckle enjoys nothing more that a good walk and rumble in the countryside and of course she loves swimming. Ebony also enjoys watching television, she loves to watch All nature programmes which show animals but her favourite is You've Been Framed. She runs into the lounge as soon as she hears either David Attenborough or Harry Hill, shes even started now to recognize certain adverts!!!!!clever? The first year whilst intially training are the hardest but the rewards are truly enormous.

written by on 04/01/2011

We have just lost our golden cocker named Duffy. We only had him 3years, we took him on as we had just lost our blue roan dog of 16 years. Duffy,s owners were emigrating to Australia and were going to have him put down unless they found a home for him. We took him on 1 month after losing our Clover cocker. Duffy was 13 when we met him, ofcourse he wasn,t the same but we got to know each other over the past 3 years and we do miss him so, out of the blue he had a seizure last week 29th December ,10, then 24 hours after another then another 4 within 2 hours of each attack, we had to make that awful decision of saying goodbye. He was 16 and 3 months old. We have always had cockers 4 in all, they have all been different but all have characters of their own, we have been lucky as they have all lived past 16 years. We are now looking for a new friend to adopt to replace the empty void we feel, not a puppy just a cocker who needs a loving home, God bless my Duffy.

We have a 3 year old field spaniel. At home he is affectionate, obedient and highly inteligent. Once he goes outdoors he becomes completely independent, and most times he ignores us.
He has started to become aggresive with dogs on leads, and turns on us when we try to pull him away. Is this what you call cocker spaniel rage?
Would neutering sort out his aggresive behaviour?
Would appreciate opinions

“Like my children Harvey our golden cocker spaniel is...”

★★★★★

written by on 28/08/2009

Like my children Harvey our golden cocker spaniel is so loved and adored.
Harvey brings the sunshine out in every one, he wants to be friends with all humans and gets on well with most breeds of dogs. Not so keen on black labradors but well we don't like everyone we meet do we.

Harvey loves his food especially bakers chicken cubes as well as Iams.

At least three times a day Harvey is out with the family running on the field, walking by the stream and running over the helli cliffs near where we live.

Harvey is so handsome and cute as well, a mixture of a show and a working dog. HIs favourite toy is of course his tennis ball, followed by a squeeky chicken. Harvey is so intelligent, if you ask him to get his toys he will get them from where he left them last time, either from the bedroom or the kitchen. So well behaved, I can take him anywhere.
My Harvey Cocker, my best friend,my sanity, my world with Harvey in it is so complete. Thank you Harvey for being there for me all the time.

“I got Sophie in June 2008. One of my best decisions!...”

★★★★★

written by on 22/07/2009

I got Sophie in June 2008. One of my best decisions! She is very affectionate, intelligent but very needy.

The welcome after being absent is superb. She is also very excitable once she hears the word "WALK"! We now spell it, but she is now re-acting to this too.

Very intelligent dogs with huge energy. I would recommend one for anyone, provided that they will walk at least once a day for at least an hour. Get a ball thrower.

I made the mistake of allowing her on couches - bad idea. Cocker Spaniels shed a lot

“I've always been a cat person until I got a cocker...”

★★★★★

written by nloxton on 25/02/2009

I've always been a cat person until I got a cocker spaniel. Honey is an orange roan girl and is the most beautiful dog I have ever known, let alone owned. She follows me everywhere (absolutely EVERYWHERE) and is up for anything at any time. She is placid and easy going, always up for a cuddle and always enthusiastic for a walk. She is small enough to take everywhere and gets along with every other dog she meets. She totally adores her family and is extremely loyal. I have two cocker spaniels and charlie (a blue roan boy) is sweet boy who is completely addicted to pats. Both were easy to toilet train. Cocker spaniels need people and affection. They are lovely and happy dogs but they need companionship. This is crucial. These little angels are very loyal and they adore their owner, so much so that they can get quite upset if they are left alone. They are best suited to households where someone is always home or households with more than one dog. BUT THEY ARE WORTH IT!!!! BEST PET EVER!!!

I have had my Cocker Spaniel for two weeks and she is 10 weeks old. Although it is early days, she is responding well to training, and is very intelligent. She is good fun, and my 5 year old son adores her. We can't wait to take her out for a walk! She is so good, our friends have bought her sister!!

written by Alison1976 on 23/08/2005

We bought our Cocker in August last year when she was 8 weeks old, and she is the best thing I think we have every purchased. She loves being made a fuss of, and loves making a fuss of you when you come home. Very intelligent (when she wants to be!), very affectionate, and adores playing with toys and never runs out of energy. She just loves to be by your side - perfect company.
We have heard of Cocker Rage, but I think this comes down to how you handle a dog if you leave them for hours on end, and don't give them the attention they deserve this will make a very very unhappy dog.

“I have owned Cockers Spaniels for over 20 years - all...”

★★★★★

written by dorrit on 25/05/2005

I have owned Cockers Spaniels for over 20 years - all of them rescued. This is a breed greatly and sadly misunderstood!

For far too long, too many owners, on discovering that Cocker Spaniels are not quite the lap dog they had hoped for, have resorted to using the excuse that the dog is suffering from 'rage syndrome'. Amazingly, very few owners keep their Spaniel.

So surely, it's their justifiable excuse and their way to exonerate themselves of responsiblity and allow themselves a guilt free peace of mind when they abandon them.

Should the issue not be trying to identify why the dog has developed these traits?

Without doubt, some dogs, and that includes all breeds, even including 'Bitzers', are prone to defects. Though that's no reason or excuse to abandon, what surely is part of the family?

I believe that, only when owners become responsible and start to research the breed they intend to invite into their lives and then realise that this incredible animal will become a part of the family and excepting that at times all living creature are infalable, and that a Cocker Spaniel's needs are no different from any other crature.

If someone needs comfort from a fluffy inanimate object, then buy a teddy bear. Believe me, everyone will be better off!

Ataylor's Response to 194866_dorrit's Review

I have owned 2 cocker spaniels and adored them both. They require a lot of love and attention and thrive on it. Therefore, if someone isn't prepared to commit to the time, they should get a cat.

I am aware that cats take time too. All pets do. I owned cats myself for over 15 years. But cats are a lot more independant than a Cocker Spaniel. Cats in the wild are pretty much solitary animals, where dogs are pack animals. I have owned or been around many different dog breeds for over 50 years. I have found Cockers (and also Poodles and Golden Retrievers) to be among the most needy for human companionship. I have done a lot of research on different dog breeds (and cats too for some extent) and have found quite a bit of literature to support my claim. I feel everyone should do the same before falling for an animals cute face. I feel all pets should be a lifetime commitment and not a passing fancy.

My cocker spaniel was bred for working but is kept as a pet. He is very intelligent and easy to train. He is so affectionate and loves cuddling people. He is so much fun to exercise and excels at agility classes. He gets on very well with our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and looks after him by washing his face and fetching him when he goes too far away. He is such a character and all round brilliant dog.
