Decent bike for the money.
Very stable on the road, big wheels.
Only problem, you need a good top-box as the underseat storage area is not big enough for a full-face helmet.

I had never riden a scooter before and I felt very comfortable on the 125 immediately. I drive to and from work (60 miles) and the scooter does a great job. On the way to work one morning a deer jumped into me at 55mph and while it did considerable cosmetic damage to the scooter, I did not go down. The deer did not survive, but I did not get a scratch. As I said earlier it is very stable.

“I was looking for a light weight good handling scoot...”

I was looking for a light weight good handling scoot for backroad and in-town riding and the 2007 Kymco People S 125 has not disappointed. In town it has more than adequate power to keep up with traffic and it's great for country rides. I have had it up to just under 70 mph on the speedo so that is probably a little under 65 actual. It cruises easily in the 45-55 range. Here where I live in central PA it is mostly rolling farm lands that suit this machine well. If steep hills frequently came into play, I probably would have opted for a 250. I've ridden bikes from 50cc to 750cc over the last 40 plus years and am just getting back into riding after a 10 year lapse. I chose a small machine because I thought I always had more fun with the little ones. For me, the Kymco bears this out.

All in all the good points far outweigh the negative ones. This scoot is my return to riding from a 10 year lapse. I have ridden bikes from 50cc to 750cc over a 40 year period I always thought I had the most fun with the small ones. For me, the Kymco People S 125 bears this out. This is my first purchase of a Kymco product and was largely made based on many favorable reports on their products. At nearly a year and 2000 miles of riding It's living up to the reputation.

“I've owned a Kymco People S 125 scooter for about a...”

written by chch007 on 01/11/2007

I've owned a Kymco People S 125 scooter for about a year, and in that time I have done around 6500 miles. I bought it brand new from a local Kymco dealer, although I had rarely heard of Kymco previously. So it was a bit of a gamble, but it's turned out to be a very good choice.

I have ridden the bike in all weather and it has never let me down so far and I've been very pleased with its performance.

I have mostly used it for a daily commute of around 20 miles each way, a journey which involves some A-roads and some town driving. The scooter will accelerate briskly up to about 50mph and then proceed up to around 60mph and it seems happy to travel at that speed for ages on a flat road. Town driving is handled with ease and it is no problem to filter through slow traffic and overtake. Handling is a good point of this bike due to the larger wheels. The engine is smooth and quiet and the bike provides a pleasant ride. The suspension does prove to be a little hard at times, and the poorly maintained road surfaces will be noticed.

I have taken the bike onto motorways a few times, and it can be done without any problems, although I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it. I find that while travelling on a fast dual carriageway or motorway, the speed will tend to be between 65-70mph, which is ok for a while but for regular motorway travel, a larger engine would be advisable. However, the People S 125 copes fine on the A-roads and easily keeps up with the traffic.

Taking a passenger on board doesn't seem to present any problems either. It makes the scooter a bit slower to pull away, but will still get up to 60mph on a flat open road, and due to the fairly large seat and the position of the passenger's fold-out footboards, it's a comfortable ride for both.

The Kymco is very reliable and will start on the first press of the starter (as long as you remember to turn twist the throttle slightly while pressing the button - particularly if the engine is warm). And just to be on the safe side, there's a kick start lever - not that I've ever had to use it. The only problem I've had since I owned the bike is that the speedo cable broke, but I got that fixed under the 2-year warranty.

The brakes are responsive - the rear drum brake isn't particularly powerful (although it is adequate), but the front disc brake can stop the bike very promptly, and when both are used together, the scooter is easy to control.

The Kymco comes equipped with a centre stand and a side stand. The centre stand is sturdy and due to the large lever, it makes light work of putting the scooter on the stand.

The dashboard is clearly laid out, the only downside being that the speedo is in kilometres, and the miles on the inside ring don't illuminate! Also, when the fuel guage starts heading towards empty, it seems to go down fairly quickly so it's a good idea to have your next fill-up planned before it goes into the red. There is a clock and a trip meter which can be set to operate in miles or kilometers) and a service indicator which appears to remind you when oil changes are required. The indicators are LEDs (as is the taillight), which are very bright and clear. The indicator relay ticks almost loudly enough to hear it on the motorway (not entirely sure that's a good thing)! The headlight may be unusually styled, but the two bright bulbs provide great visibility at night.

Under the seat the storage space is not sufficient for a full-face helmet, as is often the case - especially with large-wheeled scooters. There is however a rear carrier and it's easy to add a top-box to it. I use the under-seat space to store a chain, and when I leave the bike parked, I can fit my jacket and a few other items in there. There is a 12v outlet for a mobile phone charger, which I often find useful. The lockable glovebox is small, but I use it to store waterproof trousers, mobile charger and the included toolkit (which includes a screwdriver for removing air filter cover, etc and a sparkplug tool).

The Kymco People S 125 styling may not suit everyone, but I find it to be a great bike. And for this price, if you're looking for a reliable scooter that you can use every day for short or moderate journeys, I would highly recommend this one.

Mediumbird's Response to chch007's Review

Written on: 23/06/2010

I found this review very helpful because... I'm still in the 'research phase', trying to decide which product to buy. It's really great that chch007 took the time to provide a detailed report on his bike, based on real-world experience. It's difficult for the prospective buyer to imagine all the real-life scenarios that one might face, particularly if one isn't presently an experienced rider.
