“Do not use worst uncaring insurance company ever!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McDowellsp254 on 08/12/2016

If there was a minus star rating I would of rated them worse than the 1 star. My cats used to be on a lifetime illness plan then without notifying me it was changed to a twelve month only illness. Not good when one cat had kidney failure with thyroid problems and the other had heart disease! Now that my cat has finally lost his battle I am fighting to get my over-payment back! I have never spoke to an unkind and uncaring company in my life. I would rather get another mortgage to help my animals than to ever use this company again.

“Don't insure older pets with them”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Carolparish on 17/08/2015

Had insurance with them for 23 years. When insured cars no options only one type. Auto renewal. My cat is now nearly 17. No claims for 8 years and cost me 240 a year. Hypothyroidism in 2011 but only small amounts but didn't claim due to excess. Now this year she was in hospital. As diagnosis in. 2o11 won't pay anything as outside 12 months. My argument is this is as if this year as no claim. Refusing to pay anything. Now has teinsl cancer and expect won't pay anything. Do not unsure with them. Ok when they are young

“Poor and disappointing following our pets death”

★☆☆☆☆

written by TimothyTaylor on 27/05/2014

This company did everything wrong following our pets death, from continuing to insure both pets after one had dies, sending out renewal notices for both pets 3 months after one had died, continuing to take payments for both pets and taking 12 weeks to settle the claim. Been with them for 16 years and when we wanted a careful professional response, they provided a shambolic slow and disrespectful service.

“NON PAYMENT”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/04/2014

We have had insurance for our pet for 15 years. At first we claimed nothing but as she has got older we have had a few claims. The amount that is taken off claims has got more and more. I recently had a claim in which has taken 10 weeks to get an answer we were told they were waiting information from the vets but this had been sent 3 times. we now have been told that from 1 of the claims which was for£201 98 we will receive £85.79 and for 2 other claims amounting to £303.14 we will get nothing as it is a recurring problem from 2006. This is disgusting and I don't know how they get away with it.

“Ignored policy cancellation after death of my dog.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/02/2014

I have never made a claim on my dogs policy,January 10th he died.I sent them an email Jan 3rd to ask them to cancel the direct debit, to which I got no reply,so I sent them a letter 23rd Jan requesting them to cancel the debit, still have not received any correspondence from them and they had 30 pounds out of my bank account for Januarys debit payment on the 24th.So I have no alternative but to get in touch with my bank and cancel it myself, considering I insured with them for nearly 15years I think their service stinks if we have another pet I won be insuring with this shower.

“I have insured my dog with DBI insurance for 11 years...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by redver on 08/04/2013

I have insured my dog with DBI insurance for 11 years and never made a claim. My dog had a small operation on his eye and foot, and for the first time made a claim. When the claim amount letter came in the post they informed me that because he is over 10, i have to pay 35% of the bill. This is ridiculous!! I am cancelling the insurance. I might as well have opened a savings account and paid into that.

“Rubbish Claims Service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/10/2012

Made a claim on the 28th Sept 2012, just rec'd a letter from them today 26th October 2012 saying they needed more information and had tried to request from vets three times. No such request rec'd at vets. Letter did not say what information was required. asked my vets to ring Ins Co to find out what info they needed. DBI kept vets on hold for 1hr before the vets gave up and asked me to phone. I can only assume that DBI will use any excuse or tactic to dely processing a claim.

“DBI Pet Insurance”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/02/2012

I have had my pet insured with DBI for 15 years and never made a claim. I paid the monthly premium increases when they came each year in the thought that when my pet needed them they would be there. Recently my vet informed me that the drugs for arthritis and incontinence that I had been paying for should be reedemable via pet insurance. The vet duly helped fill out a claim form, which admittedly spanned several years, they highlighted treatment and conditions and the form was dispatched. After 1 week I received back my claim refusing me on all counts, the main theme on all counts started with the words 'Your terms and conditions state' Having since spoken to DBI I can only echo the other reviews DO NOT INSURE YOUR PET WITH THIS COMPANY AS THEY WILL NOT BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED THEM.

“DBI are only out to make as much money from our pets....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/10/2010

DBI are only out to make as much money from our pets. To get our one and only claim paid we had to go to the Ombudsman to obtain settlement.
We finally cancelled our insurance on our 13 year old dog as they were collecting an exhorbidant amount of money each month but would only pay after deducting the £200.00 premium approximately 30% of the Vets fees. We wrote to them advising them of this and cancelled the direct debit. To date we have had three letters from them asking why we have not paid them, this was after a telephone call to their office asking why we had not had a reply from our letter. A| totaly unprofeessional Company.

“My two birmans are now 16 and up until now very...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/04/2010

My two birmans are now 16 and up until now very healthy. Paid DBI since they were kittens with no claims. Price has gone up every year and excess + % despite no claims. Recently needed treatment for a heart complaint and they had the gall to question us and the vet. The phone conversation sounded like they were going to weedle out of it so I gave them a rocket up their backside telling them exactly how it was going to be after all these years of higher than most charges. They've covered the claim but only for a year despite the need for pills for life now on. 16 years ago there weren't many insurers, Iv'e only just found out petplan have taken them over. New petplan policies are good. NEVER GO WITH DBI!!!!!

“My Newfoundland was insured with DBI for all of it's...”

★★★★☆

written by on 02/08/2009

My Newfoundland was insured with DBI for all of it's life (14.5yrs). Overall I have to say that I was happy with DBI. On the whole payments were received promptly, yes the premium went up annually, as it does with all of these companies but disputes were minimal. As my dog got older DBI did slap on a ban to claim for existing conditions saying we had claimed to the max for the condition but overall I would recommend them. Customer service was always excellent.

“Recently, my 8 month old cocker spaniel cassie, became...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/07/2009

Recently, my 8 month old cocker spaniel cassie, became ill, she had severe diarrhoea and sickness and obviously we took her to the vets, after weeks of treatment, (which we thought was covered by DBI) the vet rang to say DBI werent going to pay the bill! Consequently we are £1700 in debt to the vets surgery and cassie is still having treatment. We rang DBI to ask why (as they hadnt rang us to tell us) and they said as Cassie started with the illness a week before we took her to the vet we wernt covered. 3 weeks before we took her to the vet we got an account with DBI, they said as long as we didnt claim for 2 weeks into the policy they would cover it, but as she actually became ill a week before we took her to the vets, they wouldnt of covered it, what i want to know is why they didnt ring after the first set of blood tests to say it wouldnt be covered instead of waiting until we had a poo sample, a biopsy and 6 different sets of tablets, allergy tests and numerous injections!
Stay away from this company, they are absolutely disgusting and i will be telling every dog owner i know NOT to use them.
As for cassie, she will be having on going treatment for the foreseable future, i jsut wish i had gone with someon else!

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 25/01/2009

Recently we had a £1200 vet bill which we thought would be covered but because our cat is over 10 yrs old we have had to pay 35% of the bill which was unexpected and a disaster for us. I understand this is common with insurance companies once a cat is 10 but others charge a much lowere percentage. After being with them 20 years so disappointed. This experience has confirmed that we will never use dbi again.

“We had our German Shepherd dog for almost 11yrs, we...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Delorez on 12/09/2008

We had our German Shepherd dog for almost 11yrs, we made one claim during that time, our dog had Arthritis and the first visit to the Vet for that cost around £130, so after paying the Vet we made out the claim form and sent it to D.B.I they did pay out slowly after having deducted the £60 excess, fair enough, we did have an excess on the policy. I do think they could have paid out quicker though.
At the end of June this year our dog became very sick, (she had been in a lot of pain for a long time, the medication was not working too well and she often made her feet bleed biting them because of the pain) she was in a collapsed state in our living room, my husband was at work and as I am registered disabled I could not lift the dog into my car (she was very big, even for a Shepherd dog, she weighed 105 pounds) I called our Vet and she very kindly made a house call (not many vets will do that) She said the dog was really past the point of no return and she put her to sleep in our house. It was very sad but at least she died in her home where she had been loved so much by all of us.
The cost of this visit, the euthanizing of my dog and the fee for the Pet Cemetery (cremation) was £180, so I paid the Vet no problem, to be honest I didn ' t care what it cost as long as my dog was no longer in any pain.
At the suggestion of my Vet I filled out another claim form. My Vet thought that as £180 is a lot of money, I may be able to get some of it back as she had made the house call, the Vet said even after the excess deduction we should at least get the rest covered. I on the other hand had absolutely no faith, I knew that even though we had paid £19 a month for the past 10 years (it was cheaper at the start of course, just went up with inflation, so it was still expensive pro-rata) I knew we would get turned down, and guess what, I was right, we got nothing as the dog had been diagnosed with the disease for more than a year. In my view the fact that she had, had the condition for over a year was not the issue, I was trying to get the cost of the visit and cremation not treatment.
I am not accusing D.B.I of being dishonest, I am sure they were quite within their rights to refuse payment, but that ' s only because they make their insurance contracts bullet proof in their favour, making any sort of a claim from this company is very difficult if not impossible, so I would advise anyone with a pet, or indeed anyone considering acquiring one, be sure to insure it, but don ' t choose D.B.I or any other insurance associated with them.
Do your homework, check out internet sites, look for recommendations and try to get one without much of an excess on it, those policies may cost more but in the end it could save you a lot of money and heartbreak.
After our dog died, I called D.B.I to inform them of her death, and also to get a claim form. The dog was actually registered to ME by the Kennel Club, the policy payments were made monthly from MY bank account, but when I tried to talk to them about the dog and it's illness they would not discuss it with me because my husband originally signed the application at the Stud we bought her from. This is Data protection gone mad; it was a dog, MY dog.
Its quite amusing though, because, after I cancelled the Direct Debit they didn ' t mind speaking to me then, they called to say that unless I paid up my dog would no longer be insured, it was then I asked why would we insure a dead dog, and they really should not be talking to me as the policy was not in my name, they said it didn ' t matter then (no surprise there, they were after money hey?) It just goes to show that the departments at the company do not communicate, surely their computer system should be linked to all departments so when a customer loses a pet, everyone will know, that way the grieving owners will not be upset by nasty phone call's or letters. Initially they told me not to cancel the D.D as they would do it, good job I took no notice they have tried again since.
We also have private medical insurance, unfortunately we have had to use it many times, I have had 54 surgeries and Cancer, I have been in Intensive Care twice and have cost our insurance company an awful lot of money, but Insurance is what it is, and they did what it said on the can, they covered me, all my operations C.T scans and lot's of other things, every single bill was paid and paid quickly. They treat me with respect and compassion at all times, why D.B.I can ' t behave in the same way is a mystery to me.
To pet owners every where, enjoy your animals after all they are FAMILY.

written by bertram on 06/05/2007

I had a dog that was insured with DBI Insurance and unfortunately it was an animal which had major health problems. Every claim, despite being continouous, was disputed, and they took ages to settle. They always argued every little point, even though I proved them wrong on every occasion. In the end, I cancelled the cover as I couldn't take the hassle anymore. I carried the cost of the treatment from then, until his death this year, myself. I would warn anyone not to touch this company with a bargepole.

Anthony Lane's Response to bertram's Review

I was with DBI insurance for 10 years with my dog, he had lots of problems in later life, the insurance company always paid out. It was done by my vets I had no dealings, I only had to phone for additional claims forms.
