I Saw Cabaret Last Saturday (01/03/2008) And Was T
I saw Cabaret last Saturday (01/03/2008) and was thoroughly impressed with what I saw. The production was innovative with constant motion from the innovative sets and cast assisting the transitions adding to the sense of hedonism created in the performances. The hard working on stage band really added to the atmosphere and were a great addition
Having seen Amy Nutall sing on TV and not being very impressed I was floored by her performance as Sally. Completely out of control and not caring, until brought down to reality in the title song she commanded the stage and her interpretation of which is the best I have ever seen.
In supporting roles Angela Richards and Barrie James bring great warmth and humanity to their characters and are delightfully funny and touching in "It couldn't please me more" and especially "Married". Michael Beckley is effective in his portrayal of Ernst, more complex an individual than the part often receives. Steven Cree essays a confused and almost boyish Cliff and his growing disgust of his situation is well realised.
It is vital for the Emcee to strike the right balance of Camp and Menace. Unfortunately Julian Clary misses completely, not creating a character so much as just delivering a variant of his own act. Not until the shatteringly effective finale does he finally become more than a camp panto performance and by then it's too late, however I would still heartily recommend the production as a whole.

Sledgehammer Approach To What Was Originally A Sub
Sledgehammer approach to what was originally a subtle and moving stage musical. It's way over the top for most of the evening. The supposedly daring s & m overtones as well as the emphasized gay elemnt (which in the original was barely hinted at) soon outlive their welcome.
Amy Nutall is adequate as Sally but not much more. Julian Clary's laid back emcee must be the most bland interpretation this role has ever been given. It's also one of the weakest.
The bulky heavey wooden sets have a distancing effect on the viewer when just the opposite intimacy is needed.
Angela Richards Fraulein Schneider was one of the best performances of the evening.
For those who don't really know the musical it may be worth watching. But for real musical theater fans this is one to miss.

I Saw Julian Clary This Week In Cabaret And I Hone
I saw Julian Clary this week in Cabaret and I honestly think that he should never be allowed on stage again. He can't act, sing nor move!!! What were they thinking by giving him this job? It's offensive to people with actual talent. Overall the production is very different from the original but not in a good way.

Cabaret Is A Very Polished Production, Seen It Wit
Cabaret is a very polished production, seen it with both casts, Kim and Amy
are both excellent as Sally and James and Julian Clary are both very different but as good. A great show that is very thought provoking, Julian has settled into the character but still feel that James was better as the host.
Go and see it - the audience on all 3 nights I have seen it are speechless as the curtain falls on the second act - and so they should be!

This Was A Truly Spectacular Show! As Soon As The
This was a truly spectacular show! As soon as the curtain went up you knew you were in for a real treat. I had read some reviews on this before I went to see it myself and I have to agree that sometimes punchlines were lost and each song was pretty similar. However, I thought the acting from the entire cast was superb and what Honor Blackman lost in her singing ability she soon made up for in presence. As well as being a fantstic musical, the story is also rather thought-provoking. I was also suprised at the level of nudity in the show. No sooner had you got to the second scene and a man was running around the stage completly naked, however it's not a free-for-all and the nudity is very well dramatised and not at all random as it may appear. In all this is a very good show and I would recommend it to a friend!
