“Enrolment number EB1050134”

written by anjab on 06/09/2012

I have just finished the BTEC in Travel & Tourism, which my company sponsored me for and which I completed over the course of 2 years. My tutor was supportive throughout, always marked my assignments very promptly and answered any questions I had. However, I was not very impressed with the course materials. They took a while to arrive and were quite sloppily put together, with lots of typos, grammatical errors and obvious cut&paste jobs. They were also very out-of-date, although towards the end of my course an updated version was published. I felt the course material didn't equip me very well to tackle my assignments and that I had to do a lot of the groundwork myself, in addition to the research required for each specific assignment. In hindsight, I think it would have been good to be able to see an example of the course material before purchase. That said, the overall experience of going back to study after 10 years was great and I got a great sense of focus and achievement from it.

“EDI Criminology ”

★★★☆☆

written by Serenity_J on 28/06/2012

This was a very interesting course; the course book helped so much and explained everything in detail. I f criminology is something you want to get into or have a general interest this course provide all the information needed. There were lots of online web semiars which helped if you need guidance on your assignments and your tutor is always just a phone call, or email away for any problems you may have. There are a lot of online resources that helps students get through their studies, from getting started to returning into studies. There is constant support at hand and you can interact with other students online within your course or not. I would recommend studying with Home learning college this is my second course I have completed with them and I have not had any problems with he enrolment process or the delivery of my books. It is also value for money and the student card is an added bonus. Home learning college is a very good distant learning option. Miss Jones: E11000421

“New start in new country!”

I have started AAT training with Home Learning College as a distance learning student. All learning materials are very helpful and I have find it easy to follow even though English is not my mother tongue. I had great tutor support specially with WEAF where tutor gave me a call before exam and explained me all aspects of exam. There was not a question left without answer, whenever I asked for help. I have started Level 2 in December 2011, passed all exams in March and got my Certificate in April 2012. The only down side of studying with HLC is exam booking process. There is a rule to book exam two months before sitting it without knowing a date of exam, so it may be any date in the month you are booking in. That slows down entire process because some exams at the beginner level of AAT are easy to prepare in just few weeks and then you need to wait for your exam sitting more then you actually need to prepare it. I have booked all my exams in January and then had very busy month in March. I will go further with AAT but I am looking for distance learning provider where I will be more flexible in booking and sitting of exams. Student CB1105308

“Experience with AAT Level 2”

★★★☆☆

written by VinceH on 04/05/2012

The books arrived on time and I was full of enthusiasm when I reviewed them. The web site took a bit of getting used to but was okay. After spending some months going through the books it transpired that I was going through the wrong books. After contacting HLC they forwarded on the new documentation and I started again. The tutor was quite helpful but the vast majority of my questions related to errors in the books. Once I got more confident with my skills I raised less questions. The arrangements for the exams seemed smooth and I was very pleased to find that each of the exams I sat, I felt well prepared and apssed all exams first time.

As part of additional training for my work I enrolled on the AAT level 2 course with the Home Learning College. I thought this would be a good way to gain my qualification, as I could fit it around the course around my work and you can complete the course in 2 years. The HLC supplied all the books required for this course, along with a allocating a personal tutor and allowing you access onto the website. The website has a “Virtual Learning Community” (VLC) where you can talk and discuss with others, see previous exam papers and ask general questions. However, I feel there could have been further benefits from doing this course at College, with actual face to face interaction. As with the long distance course things take slightly longer and you can be left unsure sometimes if in what you are doing is right. I was initially enrolled on to the old AAT level 2 route, and had started working on these books. The Unit 30 books (introductory Accounting) had quite a few printing errors, which was very annoying and pointed out by many of the pupils on this course. After working my way through unit 30 and 34 and looking to take some exams the new AAT level 2 route had been implemented. In a way I had to go back to the beginning again of the AAT (level 2) course, though quite a bit of it was similar to the old books, it therefore took me slightly longer to complete the course, but it was still within the 2 year time period. Although the changes were nothing to do with HLC, it would have been beneficial when signing up to be told the the AAT course would be changing the course style and I would have put off enrolling until a later date and started on the newer course. A couple of other items that were frustrating with the course was, I sometimes found not all of my questions were answered by my tutor, but there are other helpful tutors and those on the VLC who can guide you. Equally when it came to booking in for the computer based exams, on a couple of occasions it took months to secure a date, so delayed my learning process. Overall, I completed the AAT level 2 course within the time period, and there were some really helpful tutors and the VLC is a very useful tool. But I think for my AAT Level 3 I will probably look at going to my local College.

“Most of the teachers don't help at all”

★★★☆☆

written by on 27/03/2012

I have done a bookkeeping course with HLC before and things were alright so I enrolled for a secod course AAT 3. The second time round my personal tutor was not answering my emails, had really long waiting times for feedback for my homework and generally I felt like I was going through the whole learning process on my own. The curriculum changed slightly after starting the course and the new materials became available after a long waiting time which set me back in my study. The only good thing was the virtual learning space where you could find a teacher to answer your questions almost all the time but even then, they would give you the answer without explaining why it was that way and not another which was not very helpful. All in all, i felt that the course was very pricy and not value for money. I've got my degree now and happy to finish with HLC, my next course will be with a day-time college. If you are not the type of motivated home learner HLC is not for you especially if you have a family and a full time job. It took me the whole 2 years to finish AAT Level 3 eventhough they say you can finish it in 6 months...

written by zuzi on 27/03/2012

I am very glad i have taken on the course, as with qualification i have better chance of getting job in an area of my interest, however i wouldn't recommend it to anybody, as i felt i have received very little if any support. I have received couple of emails in about a year asking me to try and submit the next assignment...not impressed at all... On the other hand, the material was useful and informative, i have definitely learnt a lot from it, so thank you.

“Easy to do”

★★★☆☆

written by Lisa54 on 26/03/2012

I start my course 2 years ago. It was easy to do and I was happy with the tutors I had. They always responded very quickly and marked my assessments normally withing the hour. When I hadn't done anything for a while they were always offering me support. I didn't use the tutor's at all apart from sending my assessments. The only parts I was not happy with was at the end of the course it was not clear when my final date was. I requested the course details but I didn't get any of the materials for approximately 2 weeks afterwards and therefore it was unclear when the final date was. Also I finished the course over a month and a half ago and I still haven't recieved any certificate or confirmation of my pass. The course was great but the end customer service can be improved slightly

“Carrier change to Accountant”

written by 1191034074 on 03/03/2012

I have started study accountancy 2 years ago with Level 2 as probably everybody else who had to start from scratch. Home Learning College gave me nice background of knowledge which is required in the working place. When I gained Certificate in Accountancy, I was worried where I'll find some experiences as everywhere they need people with experiences. I took me 6 months to actually find such a kind employer who would invest money and time into my selves. At the moment, I am happy and a bit busy part time Accountancy Trainee who works in the same time in full time job, to cover my study. For somebody it looks like big change and lot of effort which body would need to invest to it. But I can tell, It worth for it. Now, I am studying Level 3 with HLC and I am looking for to finish Level 4 in year time. To be honest, I am not sure If I will continue with HLC while studying level 4 as I can see other online colleges offering more services on-line for quiet same money as HLC.

Tutors were very keen to help and eager with the progress. Customer service too was very helpful. I studied Sage Instant Accounts.I do believe I could have got more value for money elsewhere such as hands on work placement provided by training provider. If I was training in an office I would understand the office environment as opposed to just being a student. “AAT Level 2”

★★★☆☆

written by ZaraPemberton on 28/02/2012

I joined HLC July 2010, my tutor Paul Buzzard was fantastic, my only criticism with the college which now transpires is a problem with AAT is I was signed on to the wrong course due to the launch date being incorrect at time of visit from sales, had to pay a renewal of AAT membership and a textbook from Kaplan due to a problem with HLC materials and failing an exam because the materials were not precise. Pauline James was amazing and with the support of customer service, I had 1/2 my AAT renewal back, the cost of the textbook, resit paid for. I did a lot of research to get my result, however the HLC/AAT have learned from my case and wish everyone well with their studies. I would use again, only if I had the confidence to do the Level 3 via distance learning. I passed in November 2011 and I am so proud of myself.

“AAT level 3 Certificate Distance Learning”

★★★☆☆

written by on 25/02/2012

At the start of my course I received several textbooks, which were mostly good, however after studying the course I noticed that every one had at least one mistake. One particularly bad example was when I completed an exam, did not pass by one question, so was given one extra question to complete in order to pass. The HLC tutor sent me an example of the type of question I had to complete, and the real question by email, with one hour to complete and return. I also checked the example of the question in the textbook. Upon checking, I found that the example given to me was wrong, the exam question given to me was exactly the same as that in the textbook, but on checking the answer in the textbook, that was wrong too! I did pass the course in the end, but I don't feel that the extra I paid to HLC rather than just buying other textbooks and taking exams separately was worth it. For the next level of my accounting studies I have changed to another company and have not had any of the issues I had with HLC so far.

“Great course but expensive for what you get.”

Unique Reference 4721033711. I studied the CIW Master Web Design course. The course itself was great, the study material was very helpful and easy to understand. I think the qualification itself is not quite as well know in the real world as they make out and I don't feel that I could get a £30,000 job off the back of this qualification alone.

“too expensive!”

★★★☆☆

written by on 23/02/2012

What I didn't like: I did my AAT level 2 with them, had to pay over £1600 pounds (2 years ago), recently found out some people paid about £300 less than me for the same course at HLC! Other providers seem to be cheaper than that (for example Kaplan). 4 months after I enrolled exams changed from paper based to computer based, old books were replaced by new ones, but to get them I'd have to pay another £50! They were available for free on-line, but I think after paying so much for the course they could at least send me new books for free. New books were full of mistakes, which improved a bit later on. Some positives: My assessments were marked by tutors in a timely manner. My exams were marked by HLC within 2 weeks or less (Computerised Accounting and Working Effectively in Accounting and Finance). Never had any problems with exams where HLC was at fault. When my venue had reported internet problems HLC send me an email to inform me about it a day before and offered that I can sit at another venue on the same day or have that exam rescheduled for when the internet is fixed. I passed all my exams without resits, and I guess it's thanks to those books as I hardly contacted any tutors. Overall I think they did OK but it definitely was not value for money! For my AAT level 3 I will most likely go with other provider. ref: 2551045689

“Distance Learning Courses 1191054058”

★★★☆☆

written by cbm1191054058 on 23/02/2012

I have studied the AAT Accounting Qualification with Home Learning College since June 2010. Currently, I am on Level 4 and hoping to graduate by early next year. My experiences with Home Learning College have been varied to date. Of the various tutors I have had and communicated with, three have been extremely helpful, offering practical and easily understandable advice. They were available when I called or emailed and responded quickly to queries. There are also individuals such as Deborah Leach in the Customer Support department who is now my first port of call when I have a problem. She is quick to sort things out or direct me to the right person. The course books are well written and easy to follow. They cover the subject matters quite thoroughly and if properly followed and studied do prepare you sufficiently to pass the AAT CBA's. One difficulty is that in regards specifically to the AAT course as Home Learning College does not have their own test centers, it can take time to get a test date allocated. Overall I have been satisfied with my experience with Home Learning College and I would recommend them to a friend or colleague. 1191054058

“Microsoft MCP/MCDST (XP)”

★★★☆☆

written by driver2002uk on 23/02/2012

Reference 4571014562 Overall my experience of home learning college was OK. IT took me the best part of 18 months to get my qualification, which was down to my lack of discipline with home study! I did find that the support was there if you wanted to go and find it, but there was no one really to push you in the right direction (as you would expect i suppose with home learning!) My reference books were very comprehensive and i even got a copy of MS Office 2007 which was a nice touch. The online portal was very good although i didn't use it that often. The cost was probably too much on reflection, but the flexible payment plan worked for me at the time. All in all glad i did it and HLC have helped me get on. Thank you!

“AAT Introductory Accounting”

★★★☆☆

written by janelove on 23/02/2012

I started this course a few years ago when I decided not to go back to work after my first child. I thought it would be easy to study at home but I personally found this quite difficult, also having a child to look after. The course materials were promptly sent and my tutor was there if I needed help. I found it easy to upload my assignments and they were always promptly marked. It did take me nearly two years to complete the course but did finally pass! With regards to value for money, I think had I made more use of the tutors then I would think it was ok but as I chose to get on with it myself and didn't really need their help I guess I didn't think the amount I paid was worth it. Not sure I would spend that amount of money again and might shop around abit more. Reference 4351011791
