“Bought a Mitsubishi L200 from new in August 2007....”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 16/11/2010

Bought a Mitsubishi L200 from new in August 2007. Vehicle was regularly serviced at my local Mitsubishi garage. After only 49,000 miles head gasket blew causing extensive damage to the engine, RAC attended stated this was a common problem with this vehicle. third one he had been to this month. My vehicle was 3 months out of warranty. neither the local garage i bought the vehicle from or Mitsubishi customer services were interested.

Bought this L200 to work on my site, it's job entailed pulling a 300kg trailer up and down a steep hill all day. For pulling power (not on the 'getting ladies front) it's great, a real tugboat of a motor, but the build quality and reliability is SHOCKING!!! Since owning it, new break pipes, new front diff (now broken again!), exhaust fell off, radiator blew up, now the head has actaully cracked!!!! so need new head, gaskets, skimming etc etc etc etc....

Now I've done the research I hear the engines on these beasts are made of monkey metal and just not good! Would NEVER buy another mitsubishi full stop. However I cannot seem to find another vehicle that would be heaps better. but L200 BIIIIIG thumbs down for me!

Oh... and they drink Oil like I do water!!!! Tell you what, they can plud that well in the gulf of Mexico thats leaking to my engine and it would solve 2 problems!

Avoid!

Wanted one of these since seeing it in its launch at the CLA game fair 2006. Bought mine Sept last year, its been great, fairly economic averaging 35mpg and I dont drive slow.

However, I am now totally gutted, the head gasket failed and its going to cost me £2500 in repairs, Mitsubishi acknowledge the problem but wont do anything aobut it.

Doing a bit of research on the internet and it appears that this problem is not a case of if it happens but more like when it happens.

I will be getting mine repaired and then get shot of it, so very dissapointed and it should not be allowed. Mitsubishi should be held to account. Also, the guy who had it before me had to have leaf spring replaced, its now got a recall on that as well

We have also got two 06 Mitsubishi Warriors and on one the head gasket, radiator and cambelts have failed and the rear leaf springs are broken, the vehicle is under 50K mileage, fully dealer serviced and maintained, never been used off road or for towing anything. The other one has a failed cambelt and has just had both leaf springs replaced - seems there are dangerous issues with the 06 model. We are currently in communication with Mitsubishi concerning these problems and are still waiting for a resolution to our complaints. We too are now hearing these same faults are occuring on other 06 models but what action can be taken as Mitsubishi are not admitting this?

“85,000 miles on clock 03 plate, big end, small end,...”

written by on 04/02/2010

85,000 miles on clock 03 plate, big end, small end, crankshaft all knackered! Expensive to repair - new engine. As with all these things have since found out this is an inherant fault particularly with 03/53 plate models! New engine fitted, 1 oil leak, back to mechanics (under 12 month warranty luckily) had it back for 4 weeks and now drinking oil! Think i will be getting rid! Toyota hilux all the way...

The full review contains all the problems.
I bought a Mitsubishi L200 53 reg. in June 2008 for £6000 second hand, which is a very good price. This car was recommended by a roadside mechanic- he was wrong. The first problem i noticed was the rear windows, they take a great effort to close; they keep going back down again. Eventually, i had to use force! Secondly, I was driving on the motorway at about 85mph, and a warning light appeared, 'Economic control unit'. This is where the engine is using up more fuel than usual and cannot continue at that speed for very long, so i ended up with a max. speed of 50 mph for the rest of the journey! That happened twice. The next problem was very serious; again, i was driving on the motorway when all of a sudden i heard this terrible sort of jingling jangling noise coming from the engine. I pulled over and called my breakdown company, they had a listen, and said it was very serious and it had to be taken in. In the next few weeks, my mechanic discovered that the lower part of the engine had a problem. It was the 3rd cylinder to be exact. The big bearing head for the cylinder had shattered, which was terminal. Now i need a new engine which is a massive cost! Despite all this, the Mitsubishi can have its good days- it is good off road with its 4WD L and H, and has excellent grip on the tyres. The cabin is also reasonably comfortable if it is not full, but the suspension spoils it- my cabin is leather but I'm sure the fabric would be more comfortable. Overall i wouldn't recommend this vehicle for reliability mainly, and the practicality and ease to 'care' for. I hope this helps

I found this review very helpful because...I have had exactly the same problems same reg,53. L200 4Work, dont make the same mistake as me on the engine by trying to buy cheap,go for a remanufactured quality with parts AND labour warranty from a reputable company, they are around eg Prestege engines has been rcomended to me and will cost about £2500 with fitting. the engine management problem sounds the same as mine comes up 2 or 3 times a year, I pull over switch off and leave it a few mins and hey presto it disapears for a few months

written by Rabbit banger on 14/04/2007

The Mitsubishi L200 2.5TD Double Cab Pick-up is not a very good truck, it's almost impossible to do a good turn even in full lock! If you push the dash in the whole of the front interior surface moves with it. There have been a few problems, the windows always jam, the parking sensors have given up the ghost and the anti- theft radio has broken 4 times now. The rear seat room is similar to a BMW six series or sport coupe of such. It is okay off road as it has 4wd h/l. However, the suspension is rubbish you can feel every groove in the road. Speed bumps are sickening. They want to fit the next generation with sports suspension! I do not recommend the Mitsubishi L200.

I think that most people buy these trucks and think they will drive as good as there posh BMW'S & MERCS. But at the end of the day it ' s a tough pickup truck that does the Job well. I have had mine a while now and will enjoy it for a long time to come. The new L200 06 is Not a Working Mans truck, as most real men will Agree.
All you see is woman and office woolly ' s buying these great Trucks and Moaning about them when they have a bumpy ride or if it makes a noise or two... they seem to forget that they are building for Working and offroading, Pickup Trucks are for The Working man not as a Normal everyday car.
The new L200 looks to fancy and will only appeal to pancey boys, who want to brag they have a new model and can go off-road to get to there big fancy houses, But when all the Fancy electric gauges and gadgets have there Faults they will even moan about that Also.
I Think the new L200 is a good truck, but in my eyes it's Not a pickup truck. If you ever see a Flash pickup truck with a load on the back please let me know as it's a very hard sight to find, as all the paint and shiny chrome will get knackered.

The Mitsubishi L200 2.5TD Double Cab Pick-up is a lovely truck to drive. I'm let down with Mitsubishi after sales, nobody seems to know anything. Within one week of purchase, the L200 had broken down 4 times, engine cutting out, really dangerous when over taking. It was eventually fixed, was supposed to have a 10 CD player and I waited 2 months, supposed to have engine chip 165 bhp and I'm still waiting. Rear window does not work, no service book with truck, still waiting.

We have had our L200 from March 2005, since then it has spent most of its time in the garage. It has been there since the beginning of Oct now. It had a new engine in August now it needs a new gearbox. It's out of warranty and the dealer offered to repair the gearbox so we could sell it! Just bought a Nissan Aventura to replace it, hope they'll be better. Mitsubishi very rude, unhelpful and difficult to contact.
