“The Kaiser Chiefs! Yours Truly, Angry mob! Very...”

★★★★☆

written by Helen of Troy on 09/03/2007

The Kaiser Chiefs! Yours Truly, Angry mob! Very commercial, very radio-playable, great for driving to, brilliant for working to. Not to everyone's musical tastes but I don't think you will be able to avoid this one!

I loved the album Employment by the Kaiser Chiefs, again a whole album of catchy songs, so when my 21 year old son played the first track and single release from this latest album, Ruby, I went out and bought Yours Truly, Angry Mob.

First track - Ruby. Well I already knew I liked this one, the more I heard it the more I loved it. Great number to start off this album, a taste of what was to come!

Track 2 - The Angry Mob. Again, very catchy, rocky, swingy! You will pick up the words very quickly and find yourself singing along at the end "We are the angry mob, we read the papers every day, we like who we like, we hate who we hate, but we're also easily swayed!" Very anthem-ish!

Track 3 Heat Dies Down. All about the ending of a relationship, "When the heat dies down I'll be back in town, And until that time I'll be around at mine," but not the sorrowful tune you may expect with these lyrics, foot-tapping, finger clicking up-beat swingy!

Track 4 Highroyds. About a housing estate called, you've got it, Highroyds! A song remembering nights out, picking up girls, fast food, cars, young man's dream times! Another up-beat number.

Track 5 Love's Not a Competition (But I'm Not Winning). The beat goes down a little for this one, acoustic sounding track. Still catchy.

Track 6 Thank You Very Much. Up with the beat again, a little more rocky sounding number thanking you for enjoying the show and asking that you let him go! Another fairly repetitive song which you will probably find yourself singing to!

Track 7 I Can Do It Without You. Slow down the beat a little again for this song, great harmonies. Another sing-a-long song La La la! Swingy!

Track 8 My Kind Of Guy. "You're my kind of guy, cos I like you're style, and you sound as horrible as me!" This song sounds to me like a film sound-track! A little weird and bouncy!

Track 9 Everything Is Average Nowadays. "When everyone would do it if they can!" Up-beat swingy catchy. Nice!

track 10 Boxing Champ. "But you were a boxing champ and I was a weakling, you didn't give me a chance, you gave me a beating!" Surprising music to these lyrics. Piano accompanyment. Gentle but catchy!

Track 11 Learnt My Lesson Well. Great up-beat number, "I'm just waiting for, the man to come with all my things, and I'm just waiting for, another man to take it all" A song telling you to get up off your seat, stop moaning and do something! "Life could be worse, you could be a nurse" I love that bit being an ex-nurse myself! And "Life could be worse, you could leave in a hearse!" Great!

Track 12 Try Your Best. Tempo goes down, softer, slower. All about trying to do your best in life.

Track 13 Retirement. Such an odd theme for such a young band! "There are many things that I would be proud of, if I'd only invented them such as the wheel." Looking back over his life in retirement! The album ends with this unusual track, It ends with a thought if you listen to the words, "I must go out on a high! and not to answer why, I want to retire, inform the suppliers, I'll leave the party in style......"

I have listened to this album several times now, the more I hear it, the more I like it. If you liked 'Employment' you will love this. The band have evolved wonderfully and every track is a good one.

My eight year old can't get enough of it. We have to listen to this every time we go out in the car now. So yes it may appeal to a younger audience, but I'm an oldie and I think it's great!

Great review, was a bit sceptical with regards if they could keep up the high standard as the "Chiefs" seemed to be revelling in critical acclaim despite only having about 3 good songs, will certainly get myself a copy!!
