The Carrera Gryphon Road Pro bicycle is an exellent introduction towards road bikes. It cannot endure the hardship that a mountain bike can take and being a middle range priced bike then I would suggest only getting average performance from it.
This bike (based on other reviews and myself) is NOT designed for the gruellling bike run when people tend to stand on the pedals to shift weight for purpose of propulsion. Simply the rear spokes wont last if u did, as the other reviwers suggest.
An excellent upgrade from a mountain bike to use on roads. A burden if well acquainted with road bikes already. A menace if used in a city of pothole roads (Coventry).
Go on Ebay and try to find a second hand hardly used bike - there are many it seems sitting in garages waiting to get claimed

I dunno why i went into halfords, but ended up buying a carerra vulcan - which i hated. salesman told me that i can lock the suspensions - which was a lie. almost lost my life on the thing as i bounced off at a corner. returned the damn thing as i was mis-sold to. wanted something promising, so after 2 hours of testing all the bikes - i bought a gryphone - and i love it! Very fast bike. I used to get really tired and sore from the vulcan, but this one keeps up with the spesialised and the ridgys.
So light i can carry up and down underground stairs.

A cracking bike for commuting - it flies compared to my old road bike, much better riding position for commuting, very smooth with minimal vibration trasmitted to rider (my biggest worry). I'm very pleased with it, and at less than £300 it's excellent value too.

I am only doing about 45-50miles a week at the moment but will be using it for the London to Brighton ride in June. Early days with it but will keep you informed if there are any changes.

I needed a low cost commuter that can do the miles (160 a week on London's shoddy roads). I've had the Gryphon 4 months now and it is perfect. Really good brakes, nice gearing, light and quick. At under £400 it is a very well specced machine. I was somewhat wary about buying from Halfords and true enough the first one I went into was staffed by Fraggle Rock. But the staff at Kingston Upon Thames were interested, knowledgeable and helpful - like a real bike shop. The 6 week service was handled very professionally. My one gripe is the tyres. They are very slippy when wet and because the brakes are so good it can be a bit scary if you have to brake hard. So I'd recommend putting new tyres on asap. But all in all a superb commuter.
