“Absolutely horrible experience”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jordansq99 on 02/02/2024

Wow. I have never left a review on a hair dye (or pretty much anything, unless it's really good). This was the most horrific experience I've ever had dying my hair and I've done it for 20 years (yes, including mid 2000s terrible box dyes!). First of all - the Naturtint Bionased’s consistency was far from a gel. It was basically as runny as water, but super oily. As I applied it to my roots, it started running down my face and neck pretty much instantly. And oh my god did it stain! The stains were EVERYWHERE. My whole face is blue black (which isn't even supposed to be the formula for an ebony black shade!), so is my neck and of course my hairline. I also had a few dry spots near my scalp and those are jet black dots now. It also dripped on my hands and arms. And I had to stay over my sink for the whole waiting time because of the constant dripping. It also really wanted to run into my eyes. I was terrified. I didn't even wait the whole suggested time as it was so bad. I never got the stains out with literally anything. As dye is usually the most effective thing to remove dye, I tried that first and that only made it worse as the dye stained instantly. I also tried a pretty strong cleanser, wipes, alcohol, of course soap, clarifying and regular shampoo, exfoliator, scrubbing it hard... NOTHING WORKED. And as I was washing it out, firstly my hair was so freaking oily it was disgusting, but then it became crunchy and very damaged-feeling. My scalp was stinging like it had been bleached. I shampooed it 3 times, which is not something I would normally do. And as I was really scared for the health of my hair, I also did a bonding treatment and deep conditioner right after. Scrubbing the stains in the shower had absolutely no effect. I lost so much hair during the whole process!! This is absolutely horrible. I am furious and depressed at the same time as I have been working SO hard to get my hair to a healthier state and I was just looking for a more natural dye than I was previously using. And THIS is what happened. I would want to freaking sue this company. It's either a really bad batch of this product (and horrible quality control in this case) or it is actually this bad, in case it should not be sold to anyone! My hair is already super thin and fine and on the drier side because it's wavy. How can you claim this dye is natural in any way if this is the result? The permanent staining is a prime example of it not being natural. AT ALL. I hope someone reads this review before trying it. At least try it somewhere other than your scalp first to see if it acts similarly.

“Large clump of hair fell out at my left hairline. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 54Wood on 23/11/2023

Everything was fine with the application but after my wet hair was in a towel a large clump fell out from my left side hairline. I have been regrowing it slowly for 2 years now! Use Herbatint instead. It is natural and usable for two applications.

“bad eye reaction”

★☆☆☆☆

written by hairdye on 24/04/2023

This is the second time of using this product and both times I had a severe eye reaction - I think probably to the conditioner. After washing out the dye and applying the conditioner and then washing that out and drying my hair, I put my reading glasses on my head as I usually do. When I put them on for reading, I had severe irritation in my eyes, causing them to water and swell up for a period of more than 24 hours, in the first instance it lasted days. I used the product for a second time because I was not 100% sure the first time that it was the product that caused the reaction. I do not have allergies and I have never had a reaction like this before to any hair product (I dye my hair 5 or 6 times/year). I certainly would never buy naturtint products again.

“Makes your hair feel like straw and fall out”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Gretcheni332 on 07/09/2018

The first time I liked it, but the more I used it the more my hair felt like straw when trying to shampoo - I have to use a LOT of conditioner to soften it up. Then it is falling out like crazy. I'm stopping use of it.

“naturtint dye dark brown permanent”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ZachariahGregory1984 on 20/05/2014

I bought this dye box dark brown from the health shop in west bromwich and used it on my hair on the night without doing a allergy test first silly me it cost me my hair all broke off and fell out within few days and had to cut it also ended up with a rash all over my face but has calmed down since the dye has been washed out with a good strong shampoo but its still there in my hair with a tingerling feeling on the hair. I would advice anyone not to use it it has PPD in it may have caused the reaction of the allergy. Been to the doctor and she said to leave chemicals alone from using on my hair if i want to keep my hair and cut it short for now its damaged. I always thought i would pay 10.50 for the box in health shop because it was meant to be gentle my god this is not true at all be careful to all of them out there who want to use it.

“Hair dyeing is new to me and I had a lot of relevant...”

written by ProspectiveUser on 23/04/2014

Hair dyeing is new to me and I had a lot of relevant questions but the advisor who answered the phone was nasty and rude and hang up on me. I heard the product is good but she herself recommends not to use the product. I need to talk to HR or her manager.

“RUINED MY HAIR”

★☆☆☆☆

written by librarian1988 on 29/03/2014

I paid almost $16.00 for Naturtint at health food store. I used 4N Natural Chestnut. I have a lot of stubborn white hair in my dark brown long (22 inches)hair. The box said it would be long lasting color with long lasting grey coverage. I had to leave it on 30 to 40 minutes for grey coverage according to the diresctions. I was alarmed at how dark the color was. I rinsed it out and my hair was black! It was stiff and tangled. I could hardly get the tangles out. My hair was DULL and artificial looking. I saw a hair stylist and she said my hair felt like it had residue on it. She advised using a clarifying shampoo. I did and my hair is brown again but still feels and looks awful. I had 6 inches cut off. My hair was naturally wavy and now it is wild. The frizz brings my hair up above my shoulders and I can't do a thing with it. I am embarrassed to go out. It is too short to wear in a bun or ponytail. I went on Phergal's website and found it was all in Spanish, being manufactured in Spain. Having read other reviews, I realized there must be an American company, although they are rude, that I can contact and they have a Help Line. On Monday I will call and see what can be done to help my ruined hair. Please DO NOT PUT THIS ON YOUR HAIR! Karen Camp

“severe allergic reaction ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GiadaNicholson112 on 28/02/2014

Please do not take a chance using this hair dye. Thankfully I did the patch test behind my ear before putting on my hair. After about three hours my skin began to have a severe allergic reaction to the dye. A month later I still have scarring from the rash caused by the dye. I contacted naturatint customer service twice and have yet to receive a response back.

“DO NOT USE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jay34 on 23/02/2014

Please do not ever use Naturtint, i had a severe reaction 8 months ago and continue to suffer with split eye lids, split ears, blisters on my neck, lumps covering my scalp. one of the ingredients is anti freeze the technical name they use on the box is propylene gylcol be warned because Naturtint is known for "Greenwashing"! Which means they cover up the ingredients by using different wording! Hope you find this useful.

Very useful!!! Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was about to use it and decided to check reviews and sure enough on the list of ingredients is ANTIFREEZE-propylene glycol and I wasn't gonna do an allergy test either.

“DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/05/2013

I have used this product successfully on multiple occasions and was happy with the results. The last 2 times I used the product it did not cover any grays and left the hair dull. Being disappointed for spending $18 per box, I thought it would be important for the company to want to know that maybe this was a bad batch and give them an opportunity to rectify the situation and give me some sort of incentive to buy their product again since I did not have any confidence purchasing it again after two unsuccessful colors. I contacted the owner of the company, and she said sorry I can't help you, sorry your out $36.00 but we can't do anything about it. Try using less developer next time. WOW!!! Really??? She was nasty, rude and refused to stand by her product. Horrible customer service. DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS COMPANY!!!

“Holy no!!”

written by Abbu on 11/05/2013

Tried using Gina product because I heard good reviews. Maybe I chose the wrong color, mahogany chestnut, but my hair looked like I had dumped a bucket of beet juice on my head. Not only do I have to face my family on Mother's Day looking like a beet but had to make an appointment with my hairdresser for Monday to redo my color which will cost me mega bucks ! Not worth ever doing again

“N10 blond turned ginger/blond”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bubica on 10/07/2012

I have light brown or dark blond hair.I used to do highlights. Light hair suits me very well because when I was younger I lived in the sunny country and had blond hair.I decided to try this natural hair colour and make myself blond avoiding damaging my hair with making many highlights. It was my first time to use permanent hair colour. According to the chart on the box I should have turned just a bit lighter staying on the safe side.I turned yellow with brassy ginger hint!It looks completely unnatural and horrible!

“Turned out wrong colour”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/09/2011

I have a sensitive scalp and thought I would try the naturtint product. It warns you in the shop (Holland and Barratt) that you should pick a colour lighter than you think. This is difficult to guess which colour you should go for. I picked Light Copper Chestnut. It turned out Mahogany. Maybe a light mahogaby but I would call it HORRIBLE. There is no chestnut in it whatever. Just red, a pinky red at that. I am 62 and want a warm colour next to my skin. The irony is, that now I am going to have to buy a 'colour out' product to get rid of it and use more chemicals, and then re-dye it, using even more chemicals. My scalp will be screaming.

“Hair now in terrible condition”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 27/07/2011

For the last 15 years I have always had my hair coloured professionally at the hairdressers. Rising costs and thinking I should perhaps look at less chemicals on my hair prompted me to to research a safe home dye. When I initially used Naturtint I was very impressed. The colour was great, it was cheaper than going to the hairdresser and I believed it was pretty natural and therefore good for my hair. Over the past 8 months I have probably used the product 5 times and the condition of my hair has deteriorated. My hair is breaking and dry and frizzy looking. The hair on the top of my head has broken to 3'' long. Naturtint is the only change that I have made to my 'hair regime' and although I was reluctant to believe something more 'natural' could be the cause, after reading similar reviews I suspect that Naturtint has not agreed with my hair.

the one thing you have to remember is that applying color still takes some level of experience. If you have never colored your own hair before now, you may have over processed your hair. Here is a question Have you been conditioning the hair regulary since coloring? Also the color that your hairdresser was putting in your hair was probably a lot more harsher than naturtint so make sure that the breaking that you have encountered is not from mixing two different types of coloring systems together. The dryness sounds like you may have over processed it or you have not been doing any leave in conditioners or intensive conditioner treatments. Also check to make sure that any medications you are taking is not affecting your hair growth. I hope this helps. And remember hair is like the body you have to nurture and take care of it everyday. :)

“Naturtint destroyed my hair”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/07/2011

Please read my story to the end! I have been going grey since a young age, and for years and years I adamantly used natural henna, having an aversion to any chemicals- especially those that dry the hair- as my hair is naturally very dry and frizzy. After three or four years of using henna, my hair became at its very best, thick and with a beautifully rich, red-brown colour. However, I found that once my grey hair increased, the henna didn't quite cover it with an intense enough colour, as my natural hair colour is dark brown. When I saw Naturtint on the shelves in Holland & Barrett, I thought I'd bite the bullet and give it a try, naively thinking that 'no ammonia, resourcinol and parabens' made it alright. After dying it with a copper brown, I was amazed at the grey coverage and the lovely colour and texture my hair was- I didn't notice any dryness- initially.. and so I was hooked, and every 4 weeks for a year or so, I continued to use this dye, until I noticed that a lot of my hair was falling out each time I washed it. A little at first, and then more and more, until I had less than a third of my original thick hair left- and the ends were breaking off so much that I had to cut my hair really short to counteract the damage. I went to see a good hairdresser who has been in the business a long time. She took one look at my hair and said- ''this hair has been bleached- badly! There is no way it could be this dry/ damaged without bleach'', I argues with her, saying I had used only a mild paraben free dye, but had my suspicions that perhaps it wasn't as mild as its reputation implied. When I got home, I looked at the ingredients on the box, and sure enough- hydrogen peroxide! Even though its a dark colour! I don't understand why so many dyes, even the 'natural' ones contain this! This product may seem alright initially- but be ware, the damage builds up over time, and before you know it, your hair is destroyed! I am about to try Daniel Fields water colours which are semi-permanent lasting 5/6 washes, and free of ammonia and peroxide. Fingers crossed !

I have used Naturtint hair colour for a number of years, and never had any problems with it until recently. The last two times I've used the product my hair has been left greasy, dull and lank. This is without using the additional leave in conditioner supplied. I once used that and it destroyed my hair, ruined my day, because it looked as if I hadn't washed my hair in weeks - such was the extreme lankness of it. And, I had only used a tiny amount. So my question is: have they changed the ingredients of the shampoo and conditioner recently? Or changed the ingredients of the tint? If so, please change them back to how they were - or I may switch brands to avoid the greasiness and lankness.

I had a licensed beautician apply Naturtint to my natural hair which is in small dreadlocks called Sisterlocks. The color is beautiful reddish-brown but after a few weeks, I began to notice my locks were breaking off. My 12 inch locks were breaking down to 2-3 inch pieces. I deep condition every time I wash but I still notice breakage. What is worse, I never see the broken locks, so I don't know when and where I am loosing them. Any suggestions or recommendations?
