They have just taken over by Virgin (the review here of their service is much worse than NTL, so who knows what will happen)!
I gave up using the email service early on, as it was seriously unreliable, and I haven't changed anything for quite a while. Once it is in and working, it is fine and a good speed.
It is not the cheapest, which is why I'm looking on the Review Centre site to switch! Sounds like the others are just as bad, but cheaper! I pay 25.99 for 4Mb.
I'm being lured by Sky's £26 (+ £11 line rental with BT) for 4Mb broadband, 6 pack TV, and weekend and evening calls package. I'm paying 25.99 just for broadband, £5.50 for analogue (yes) TV and £11 phone.

When it was good, it was very, very good, But when it was bad, 'it was horrid'. We have finally given up ntl after trialling a different service alongside, and the difference has been incredible.
The final nail in the coffin was the appalling telephone support - with numerous reasons to contact customer services, the delay in getting to speak to someone in the first place was infuriating, never mind being passed around and being told that someone would call back, but never did. For the level of service, it was seriously over-priced. We have gone.

The operators I have come into contact with seem to be based in a different country, so when you try to fix your internet over the phone it can be frustrating to have a language barrier to deal with at the same time.
They are useless with the bill, they have charged me double on a number of occasions.

I've never had NTL, because I know first and foremost that I should NEVER get it. A number of people I know have either had, or still have NTL Broadband, but I'm just going to pick out one of those people.
My friend, has had NTL for over a year now. I've always been one to go and see her at her house, and we'd usually surf the net together via NTL! Well, I was astounded! I couldn't believe how bad a service NTL was providing her with, especially compared to AOL, which I have at present. My friend experienced faulty wiring, an unreliable connection, an absolutely STUPID modem that took up loads and loads of room, and something that most ISP's have (except for AOL , fortunately for me), LIMITS AND CAPS.
Thankfully, my friend and her family finally realised how bad NTL was, and I have just got back from installing her AOL Easy-Install Silver pack.
Well, I won't be going near NTL after that experience!

Previously had NTL dial up internet connection which was beginning to show it's speed limitations. Also I now needed to free up the phone line for other family members whilst I was using the net. I selected 600Kb broadband as the best value choice for me.
Installation was easy since an NTL engineer visits your home to install cable and make the connections to your set-top TV digibox (if you don't opt for a separate modem). Installation wasn't the most discrete I've ever seen but I'll put that right when I next decorate. The engineer doesn't make the actual connection to the computer since there is a procedure to be followed when you install the connection software which NTL provide. I actually had a problem with the installation program and I couldn't actually make the software load properly at first, however a call to their technical helpline solved my problem (which turned out to be related to my computer rather than the NTL equipment).
Eventually the broadband connection worked and I immediately noticed the improvement in speed over the old dial-up. On downloading some Windows updates I felt that the download speed was not as fast as it should have been and I contacted NTL to see if I was correct. It transpired that my download speed was only functioning about 1/4 as fast as it ought to be. NTL remotely checked the cabling and digibox for faults and have now concluded that there is something amiss in their system. They are supposed to be sending an engineer to check out their hardware but as yet I have not been contacted to make the appropriate arrangements. Hopefully this issue can be resolved because right now I'm only getting the equivalent of 150Kb speed but I'm paying for 600Kb. If this isn't dealt with soon then I'm going to do some serious complaining.

***UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REPORT***

I have now had 3 NTL engineers visit to check my cable and system. Apparently my local area cable network is overworked. So, although the cabling to my house and within my house is OK, I will never be able to get the benefit of 600k internet because the NTL network isn't adequate in my area. They don't tell you this when they want you to sign on the dotted line.

If you're thinking of getting NTL broadband installed I suggest you get them to verify that you will be able to actually achieve the connection speed they are offering BEFORE YOU AGREE TO IT.

We too have the ntl 600k broadband connection. We also had the same slow transfer speeds, only sometimes reaching about 27kbs p/s. This really was bad, especially as they say how fast it is on the ads!! Anyway, while browsing the internet i looked on the BT site for broadband, it states on there that the modem has to be within, i think it was, 3 metres of the pc. So i rang up NTL and asked if this was the same with their setup, they said no! So i thought ok, i will see for myself, so i put the pc right near to the digibox and hey presto! 120 kbs p/s. I told them this and they still said it makes no difference, so i thought stuff it, i took the 12 metres of cabling away, moved the pc closer to the digibox and have not looked back since. Makes you wonder if they actually really know what they are doing these engineers. Try it and see.

Another contact of my family has recently joined NTL's 3-for-£30 service. Do you know how much money they took out of the person's account? ALMOST £100!!! NTL's excuse was that they were charging the person for a second phoneline that he didn't have and charging him for services that he hadn't wanted. Now the person won't get the money back!
