Wigan Pier has a museum of memories with lots of memorabelia organised by decade and going back as far as the war. Even if you dont remember the war its a great day out.
The day includes a short ride on a canal boat, a look at the old cotton spinning machines of days gone by and they have the world's largest original working steam engine.
